The Superferry is a high-speed catamaran ferry designed to carry passengers and vehicles between the Hawaiian Islands. Currently (as of 12/27/07) the Hawaii Superferry is operating only between the Islands of Oahu and Maui, primarily due to strong opposition from residents on the Island of Kauai. The ferry makes a single 3 hour crossing to Maui each day, leaving at 7am and returning at 2 pm. It is possible to load up your car and simply drive onto the ferry in Honolulu and drive off with all your belongings in Maui.
Though seemingly an easy way to travel, the ferry has some serious flaws. For example, the travel times are much longer than flying interisland, even when airline check-in and security clearance times are factored in - a flight between Maui and Honolulu is less than 20 minutes. Also many passenger report seasickness during even fairly calm seas, and ferry service can be cancelled with only 24 hours notice if rough seas are present - thus stranding travelers or forcing them to make other arrangements.
Prices are hard to calculate due to a system in which fuel surcharges can be added to the final pricing. At the time of this writing, the fares are $39 per person plus $59 per vehicle each way - though these fares are likely to increase as the ferry's introductory pricing promotions end in early 2008. In general, it will be cheaper to fly between island and rent a vehicle than to use the ferry service. The service was designed mainly for Hawaii residents, because most visitors who come for only 7-10 days are not likely to want to spend nearly a full day of travel time on the ferry just to go between Oahu and Maui.
