If you walk around in the Old Town, you will notice that almost all the doors you pass by have Chinese characters on each side as well as on the top of the door. These decorations are called 对联. They are poems written by the household. You can think of it as a slogan for the household. Most of the对联 are written in Chinese or 东巴文 (Language of Laxi minority group). The 对联 can describe many things and have very deep meanings. The household also change them often. There are对联 for the spring festival, there are对联 for weddings and对联 for death of a family member. Sometimes, when someone important dies in the family, there would be three set of对联posted in three consecutive years. The first set will be black ink on white paper, the second set will be black ink on green paper, and the last set will be black ink on yellow paper. Then fourth year everything will be back to normal.
