One fun excursion to do while visiting Sharm al-Sheikh is to go on a Quad tour through the desert. Quads are large, 4-wheeled motorbikes that burn over the sand dunes and provide tourists a hair-blowing, adventurous alternative to the day at the beach. Tourists can join a trip for the day, pull on their sunglasses and jeans to block the sand, and hit the gas pedal. One note of caution is that though this sport is undeniably fun, the safety guidelines differ between Europe, the US and Egypt. Therefore, some of the vehicles may be legal to ride in Egypt but do not meet western standards. Travelers should wear helmet for precaution and walk away from the vehicle if it does not look in good condition. Sun'n'Fun tours
come recommended, with offices along Na'ama Bay.
Another day excursion from Sharm is to visit the colored canyon, located North-west of Nuweiba. The cayons’ brightly-toned walls of yellow, red and brown are charming. In addition, the descent is rather easy though the path can be steep for those travelers not so ambidextrous
The St Katharine Monastery is good place to appreciate the history of the area. The monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai was built in the 6th century. Amazingly, monks continue to live in the monastery. Therefore, tourists can tour around the chapel as well as a room with the bones of deceased monks. The Monastry has many beautiful, ornate icons and crosses; its quiet calm is a welcome relief.
For the many divers who come to visit Sharm, a good place to adventure to is the Nabq Protected Area, which is the largest Coastal Protectorate on the Gulf of Aqaba. It contains a number of coral ecosystems that make this area re-known for its beauty, but perhaps less frequented than the St. Katherine or Ras Mohammed dive sites.
