Hong Kong has a unique 'cafe culture' offering cheap set meals for people on the move. At every street corner in Hong Kong, it is easy to spot small, hole-in-the-wall, proprietor-operated cafes that are open for business from 7am till 11pm, seven days a week. Popularly known as 'char chan tang' in Cantonese, these cafes are patronised by locals dressed in togs ranging from sloppy casualwear to business attire, who drop by for a quick meal or a takeaway that is easy on the pocket. A typical 'breakfast set' or 'tea set' is priced from HKD20-25 and includes a hot beverage and eggs with ham or sausages (for breakfast), a toasted savoury sandwich, congee or noodles. The price of 'set lunches' and 'set dinners' start at HKD35-40 and usually includes a savoury Cantonese style stir-fried entree served with rice, soup of the day and free flow of piping hot Chinese tea. You have a wide choice of stir-friend entrees to pick from including, just to name a few, sliced beef in oyster sauce, the ubiquitous sweet and sour pork, Oriental fish fritters, shrimp omelette and braised tofu with vegetables.
