The City of Queanbeyan is a large regional centre with a population of 38,000, nestled in a valley surrounded by natural bush and tree covered hills. It is the fastest growing inland city in New South Wales and is adjacent to the border of the Australian Capital Territory, about 20 Km from the centre of Canberra. There is also a shopping mall in the suburb of Karabar and local shops scattered througout the suburbs. Accomodation ranges from 4 star motels to traditional country town hotels, Caravan and camping grounds and bed and breakfasts. It is an ideal cheaper accomodation option for visitors to Canberra, who do not wish to pay capital city prices, and is only 9Km from Canberra Airport. The city is also serviced by rail from Sydney. There is a internal bus service in the city and to various parts of Canberra. There is a local Taxi service.
It is about a 3 1/2 hour drive to Sydney and an 8 hour dive to Melbourne by the most direct routes. Longer more scenic routes can be taken via the coast to Sydney and via the coast or the Snowy Mountains to Melbourne. These routes to Melbourne would require an overnight stop.
There are many restaurants

and Cafes in the city from 5 star to Pub Bistros. They are Modern Australian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and traditional australian country town cafes. There are a number of fast food outlets. A number licensed clubs also cater for members and their guests with drinks, food and poker (slot) machines. Interstate and overseas visitors are welcome.

As Queanbeyan is inland and 680 meters above sea level, the climate is variable with warm to hot summers, up to 38C but generally in the high 20's, and cold winters down minus 5C at night and days around 10C . In summer, nights are generally cool and in winter days are mainly sunny. Rainfall can be all year round and is not very high. The NSW Ski fields are 1 1/2 hours drive away and the Ski Season is from early June to early October. It is a 2 hour drive to the NSW South Coast.
