You will probably land in Athens International Airport (ATH) if you're flying to Athens.

The airport is only 5 years old and has excellent facilities with a wide choice of airlines.

Airport shopping includes all the obvious including a superb CD shop, tacky tourist souvenier shop and lots and lots of clothes plus of course the 'duty free' range of alcohol, chocolates and tobacco.

Eating is mainly within arrivals and then through departures plus upper levels including McDonalds which actually has views of the runway and a reasonably healthy meal of 2 bottles of water, a club sandwich plus an apple and fruit yoghurt cost 6.5 EUR.

The airport has a large number of gates and expect quite a walk whichever gate you are using (though it is still a rather small airport, walking cannot compare to the one in Brussels or Frankfurt). At least both arrivals and departures are both above right in front of the taxi rank and bus stands.

For departures all check in desks face the main entrance so getting lost isn't an option!

Getting to the airport is best by radio taxi and, depending on the location, by subway or bus. Getting from the airport to the city is better by taxi (taxis stand just in front of arrivals, as everywhere) and, depending on the destination, by subway or bus. To Syntagma (Constitution) Square the subway line takes you directly and the trip lasts around 30min. The taxi costs around 30 EUR for a journey to Athens city centre, depending on traffic conditions and the track taken, and can take about 30-45 minutes. the subway costs 6 EUR per person. The bus is cheaper, but the line to the city centre (E95) is much less frequent than the line to the National Defence subway station (E94).

If returning to the airport from travelling around Greece do not get off mainline train at Athens station; this does not have mainline link to airport. Some other stations have connections to the airport.

You may find some real bargains flying to and from Athens. Check out their website and find out all the airlines who travel there, then go to each website one by one.

If you need an overnight hotel go to the Olympic Airlines desk and they will arrange transport to and from a 5 star hotel in the beach area for 95 Euros. Superbly efficient and fabulous hotel at very cheap rate.

Overall, a well organised and clear signed airport with good shopping and eating facilities.

There is a hotel airport (Sofitel), which is facing the arrivals area and the subway station.
