The
Crop Over Festival
is held in Bridgetown, and throughout Barbados, for five weeks each year beginning in July. The celebration has been held continuously since 1974 (when it was resurrected for the first time since the 1940's when it was stopped because of the economic stresses of the Second World War). The Festival is held in celebration of the end of the sugar harvest, thus the name Crop Over. Events held during the Festival's five weeks include live music, dances and parties, parades, and street stalls selling food and other goods. A sugarcane king and queen are crowned at the beginning of the festival, chosen from among the best sugarcane workers. Weekly tent shows and concerts are held as well as daily parties that people generally attend after getting out of work. For more information on the Crop Over Festival, visit the Festival's website. If you would like to visit Bridgetown during the Festival be sure to make hotel reservations well in advance.
