Me and my husband have spent one week at the Grand.
I've seen many reviews from US citizens, much less from EU.
As I believe US and EU people have slightly different needs and perceptions towards European hospitality (maybe US still indulges in an ideal romantic image of the old continent), here is my experience.
PLUS
- The location.
Perfect for those who want to escape from Mykonos chora mess, still a 10' drive from the hotel. You need to rent a car if you don't want to rely on Mykonos taxis all time. We rent a small 4x4 for the week (and spent 400€ ) as we wanted to explore the island.
Agios Ioannis bay is nice, if you're lazy you can stay there and enjoy a piece of Greece.
The hotel beach is very small, but in June is ok. We also spent some time on a desert little bay just below the hotel terraces, between Grand and St.John beaches: this was a fantastic solution, just a few steps from our super comfortable Grand sunbed!
- The staff.
I'm very demanding and I can be really bitchy, but here I found myself passing over a few things..Why? They're Greek, they smile, they have a warm attitude. Maybe not always professional (the service is not a 5 stars, overall the hotel is not a 5 stars), but so nice. I think most of the management belongs to the family who owns the hotel, so they're deeply involved into the business. Ex: I asked for yoga sessions. The yoga trainer who normally goes there (from outside) was not available, so the lady from the desk selected another trainer and she was so concerned about the output that she went to see us from above on the ampitheatre (please go there at sunset if you practice yoga) and called me in the room afterwords asking how it was. To be honest: the trainer was kind but average, but I didn't complained.
- The hotel grounds and architecture.
Both well designed and well maintained (opened in 2002), and very very clean. I think most of the rooms have a good location, or a good balance between view and location. They're all different anyway, some have small terraces, other have balconies. I think it's worth to pay an extra for the sea view. We were staying in a Standard Sea View on the second level (n.219), we had a terrace but it was not isolated, as it was shared with another room (only divided by short wall). So not enough privacy but a nice view and very convenient to reach the main area (pool, reataurant, spa).
The sea water swimming pool (it contains of course a small ammount of chlorine) is pleasant. It's not heated, so it's warmer than the freezing Aegean sea but not that warm.
The terraces are well organized, you can always find your niche (the hotel was almost full): either closer to the pool or more secluded, more or less windy, near the bar or on the beach..So lots of choice.
Between PLUS and MINUS
- Room: good decor, average size, average bed, ok terrace, bad shower.
I'm an architect as a first background, so again can be very bitchy. I found the decor elegant and classy, with some local touches without falling in the Greek stereotype.
The standard room is not big, and our rate was 289€. For one week stay I would have preferred a larger one, but all the following roomtypes have the same size:
- standard garden
- standard
- standard with view (ours)
- superior (difference: the bathroom have a separate shower with steam..)
If I well understood only Suites are bigger.
The terrace as I said was shared with another room, only divided by a small wall. Means that either you become close friend to your neightbour or you will feel embarassed to disturb a young couple in honeymoon kissing at sunset..
Bed: it was not super comfy for the hotel level. We had to ask for an additional thin mattress on top to get a better comfort. This made it ok.
Bathroom: it's quite big compared to the roomsize, and nicely decorated, but the shower is inside the bathtube in standard rooms and for 289€ maybe you expect a walk-in/separate shower.
Overall I enjoied the room, but for the hotel level there could be some improvements. I told the hotel manager about the terrace and after a couple of days (hotel fully booked) he was able to show me another room with a balcony with more privacy, but the the room was still a standard and so same shower, so not enough difference to move.
MINUS
- Food.
The breakfast was quite nice, well I have seen much much more elsewhere, but it was ok. We have tested the hotel kitchen at the pool restaurant once and this was enough to avoid it at dinner. I'm afraid this is not one of Grand points of strenght. But consider that we're Italian and global gourmet fanatic.
Surprisingly Mykonos offered some very good dining experiences instead:
- Nammos at Psarou beach (super trendy + high quality)
- Nobu in Mykonos town (crazy to go to Nobu in Mykonos, but it's good!)
- Nikos taverna on the bay between Grand and Mykonos town for a good local friendly dinner.
- The local taverna at Fokos beach, great
- Maerios taverna in town: truly handmade feeling.
- Mamacas in town: super interpretation of greek classics (and nice decor)
- Service not 5 stars
While the staff is really nice, what you get sometimes is very far from a 5 star level. Ex: you lie by the pool at 7:30pm waiting for the superb sunset and you discover that the bar closes at 7 (sunset is at 8:30) so you need to go to the restaurant, ask for drinks that you will receive after 30'..Some of the guys at the beach/pool/breakfast are not trained, it's somehow improvisation.
But as I said overall this is compensated by the warm attitude and willingness to help.
- Spa
Quite disappointing experience. I have tried a Lomi Lomi massage on the terrace sea pavilion and it was not good for my standards, while I paied the usual 100€ that I pay in world leadind spas. The pavilion is also very close to the -1 level sunbeds: you can hear people talking, music from the bar, and people can also see you. I had also another treatment and in my opinion the spa staff is not in line with the promise. Moreover the steam room is quite strange, you need to turn it on by yourself and the area is not well designed and maintained.
SUMMARY
This is a really nice hotel, in a unique location, well designed and managed with care. Only, it's simply not a 5 stars for international standards while the target is international. If you compare it with the average Greek hospitality of some years ago it probably 'becomes' a 5 stars, but things are fast changing and the market is getting competitive now. Some little adjustments could make it a truly 5 stars experience.
