We spent the week between Christmas and New Years at the Treasure Cay Resort. We booked the trip a couple of weeks before, so we felt lucky to get any affordable accommodations at all. The room was pretty much as others had stated, but we didn't have great expectations, so it was fine. What added to our good experience was that we got a week of above average weather for this time of year.
We booked the Standard room. It was very basic, as mentioned in many of these reviews. It had a refrigerator and coffee maker. The bathroom was kind of beat up, but the tub had been refurbished. The water did fluctuate from cold to scalding hot-be careful in the shower!
The room was made up and cleaned every day. They even moved our sandy shoes and sandals and wiped up under them and put them back neatly. The bathroom was nicely cleaned too. The bed was king size. The sheets and blankets were so-so-but I believe they were changed after we were there a couple of days. A little hole in the sheets was not there the last couple of nights.
The room (rm 1070) was facing away from the marina. We had a little patio with some well worn furniture, but it had a nice view of the tropical landscaping. We would often take the short walk to the marina side to catch the sunsets and sunrises. During this time in December, our patio was always in shade.
The table and chairs in the room were comfortable and handy - as we are cheap and brought our own cereal for breakfast and made sandwiches for our excursions. Everything you need for this is available in the convenient store or grocery store-both of which are on the grounds.
One disappointment was that the sliding glass door had been sealed shut due to the installation of an air conditioner. If we wanted fresh air, we had to leave the door open, which we couldn't do at night (although we felt perfectly safe and probably could have left it open a bit at night). The air conditioner was noisy and blew directly at the bed, so we toughed it out and left it off. The room got kind of stuffy overnight. (We did see that some rooms did have central air and open windows, seemingly in working order.)
As for the grounds of Treasure Cay-they were very nice and well kept. The beach (across the road, a 5-7 minute walk) was wonderful. The beach was not manicured, but we like that sort of "natural" state. There is a woman there who rents out the chairs and umbrellas. One day we were charged for the chairs ($3 each), one day we were told they were included with our room.
The restaurants, as most people have mentioned are ok and pricey. No surprise there. There is a free shuttle to a nearby restaurant called Touch of Class. It was similar to the resort, but there were more locals at the bar. If you do Pizza night at the Tipsy Seagull-be prepared to wait.
Treasure Cay itself is kind of sleepy. The hotel is located in a gated condo/time share community. There isn't much to do beyond the beach and restaurants. There's no "shopping" to speak of. So you will need to take to the water. We rented kayaks from Ozzie and took them out of the marina into a secluded mangrove area. It was beautiful. We only saw two other kayakers. We saw plenty of fish and a couple of magnificent birds. It was very peaceful. We found a nice shore to stop and eat our lunch.
We booked a snorkel trip with Brendal's on Green Turtle Cay (you have got to see Brendal in his wet suit-WOW! If you catch him in his Speedo, it's even more of a treat. Try not to stare! This is just a little added bonus of the trip.) That trip was great. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Apparently, this is the guy you want to scuba dive with. We saw a shark on this trip-not to mention all the cool fish. We did need to take a cab to and from the Green Turtle ferry, so the trip can be pricey. There is a dive shop right at the hotel, but we didn't sign up in time.
One day we rented a car and went to Marsh harbor. It was ok, nothing too exciting there, but we did another snorkel trip right off the beach at the Mermaid Reef. Rent equipment and just drive over. They'll give you directions. Very easy and good snorkeling.
We rented the car in Treasure Cay. It was not your standard car rental. The car (like the room) was fairly beat up. But they gave us $20 for gas because the tank was bone dry. Gas is about $5 a gallon there. Note-prior to leaving, we were told there was a shuttle to Marsh Harbor 3 times a day-when we got there, we were told there was no shuttle, so we had to rent the car. Marsh Harbor would not be worth the price of cabbing it.
The food, taxis and activities add up (hence the cereal from home) We were not charged additional fees upon check out because we booked through Expedia and all fees were included in the total price.
Overall we really enjoyed this trip and the hotel. We've stayed on Paradise Island and spent our days in Atlantis-this was not Atlantis. If you like luxury, you might want to stay elsewhere. If you are up to making your own agenda and enjoy being away from over touristy places, you'll love Treasure Cay.
