I checked out of the Ritz Rose Hall feeling rather confused. It was a lovely hotel. Clean. Nice grounds. Overall, decent staff. But I didn't walk away feeling like I just spent a long weekend at the Ritz.

The food, of course, very expensive, and very sub-par. Very uninspired, and even overly inspired, confused dishes. I've spent time at other Ritz locations, so I was very much looking forward to breakfast, but I was left disappointed. Nothing spectacular, nothing at all. You could slap a Hilton or Ramada sign on the outside of this proptery and I'd buy it as that... I did not once feel like I was at a Ritz Carlton. Not once.

The beach is terrible. Very rocky. Small. One nice cabana, and a few covered double loungers, in very poor shape. Over the 4 days we spent on the beach, we were asked only twice if we'd like something to drink. The Jerk Center was fine. Nothing outstanding. But I will say, the first time my husband ordered the Jerk Lobster, he 2 nice, halved lobster tails...for $28.00... then next time, one, halved lobster tail for the same price. Not sure what gives there.

I wouldn't go back. I just left Montego Bay feeling stunned and confused. I cannot get over what a poor experience I had on this end of Jamaica overall. It's really too bad.

“Best on the Island”

The Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort

After traveling for almost 30+ years I am shocked as to why anyone would give this Ritz a bad or mediocre review. The ABSOLUTE BEST service I have experienced at any hotel in the past 5 years. Drop dead gorgeous (and perfectly maintained) property. The staff is first rate, and the food is incredible. So much to do for adults and children alike. I was sad to leave, and would go back tomorrow. Normally a VILLA traveler, I now have a totally different opinion of staying in a 5 star property, especially the Ritz... Young or old, I promise you will thoroughly enjoy every minute of you're stay at the Ritz in Jamaica!

“A Sub-par Ritz”

This Ritz does not live up to the Ritz Carlton standard. The rooms are shabby, the facilities are sub-par and the food tastes reheated. The staff was very nice and the jerk shack on the beach is outstanding! The beach is very small and very crowded and people reserve lounge chairs early in the day to be ocean side. Overall we would not recommend this hotel.

“mix of positives and negatives”

The Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort

I was here for a 4 day conference, so was not paying for anything, but if I was I would have been disappointed. The biggest problem was the room. Right off the elevator I heard the elevator shaft go up and down ALL day and ALL night long. It was a nightmare. I tried 3 days in a row to change room but the staff said they were booked. If I had paid for the room I would have been hands down IRATE. Also the view was not garden but rather the back of a restaurant and a wall were old tables and chairs were kept. The deck also had one chair, not two. The front desk staff was very unaccomodating. I quit asking for a room change and they never said another word. Very Very disappointing!!!

Other negatives, if you like to "walk the beach" you cannot do that here. Extremely small crowded beach with no ability to stroll. Also, you are kind of stuck at the resort as cab rides even only ten minutes away cost $50. Took a cab to the hip strip in M. Bay which I do not recommend. Also went rafting on the Martha Brae which was great.

Last big negative was the spa. I booked a 50 minute massage for $115. It was only about 45 minutes and the static coming from the music was annoying. The actual massage was great, but when I got the bill a few days later it came to $155 for a $115 massage. Hefty taxes and service fees!!! Also the waiting room for the massage was attached to the locker room, very noisy with people drying there hair. Not a relaxing, calming spa environment.

The positives: excellent food in all 4 restaurants-superb, and the waitstaff was great too.

Fun rafts for floating in the ocean, waves calm enough were you can swim!

But overall not great. There are many conferences here so if you are thinking of this for a honeymoon or romantic trip I would reconsider! This trip dimished my perception of the Ritz for being an ultra classy hotel. They needed more people who could problem solve and the room was a joke.

“Great stay at the Ritz”

The Ritz-Carlton Golf & Spa Resort

Mar 30, 2008
4/5 found this review helpful

Had a great stay at the Ritz Carlton with my husband and college-age son. The oceanfront suite was perfect for three--a separate bedroom and bath and a living room with sofabed and bath. Two large, flat-screen TV's allowed for March Madness viewing.

We had the all-inclusive plan which covered the very high cost of food and beverages (breakfast buffet for three was $87.00). This allowed us to enjoy cocktails daily and wine with complete dinners. The food was acceptable with some dishes being very good.

Employees of the Ritz were quite friendly and often very accommodating. Consistency was a slight issue-- the room was never made-up the same way everyday--some hotel-supplied items would be missing---some servers provided snacks with cocktails and others had to be asked. But overall, the stay was great with fine weather and a wonderful, amazing golf course.

One major problem: the AA return flight was cancelled. We were not notified since our cell phones couldn't be used in Jamaica. This caused a nightmare situation. In the airport, we met other travelers who stayed at a lesser-priced hotel which posted a sign about the cancellation in the lobby. Too bad the Ritz didn't do the same.
