“Not that impressed. Could have been better.”

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

Apr 10, 2008

It wasn't the worst experience, nor the best. I would have to agree with another reviewer about the Kids Club issue. The hotel staff did not appear to know anything about it. Finally, I was directed to the Casino where they told us that the lady who ran the Kids Club had quit. Obviously, they could not have necessarily known this ahead of time but it would have been nice if they had a backup plan. Having brought a child, it was my number 1 requirement for picking this hotel and the fact that I am a loyal Marriott rewards member. We realized that my 9-year-old would not be interested in a lot of the sightseeing and activities we were so we had our heart set on him having a club for activities so we could do our thing too. Imagine our surprise..no kids club..Their alternative consisted of hiring a babysitter at $15 an hour for a minimum of 4 hours. No thanks. Just another way to charge outrageous fees. So, in turn, we did not get to experience a majority of things that we felt PR would have to offer. We were reduced to hanging out at the hotel with a not so great beach. The water in front of the hotel was disgusting and garbage had washed ashore..and I mean garbage, cans, bottles, old sunglasses. I shutter to think if anyone would walk on the beach barefooted and get a cut. I hate to sound like a whiner but another complaint was the service. It was so slow. I feel everyone did the bear minimum, yet I am sure expected a tip. One night we went down to eat at the cafe and they had one person working and the place was full. Most people did not even get served so they left. We are frequent visitors to Mexico and we'll take our dollars there. I do have to say also that the taxi drivers were not friendly at all. They never said one word to us..NONE of them and we used several. I would also have to agree that all charged different rates to the same places so that was wierd. Just very not friendly. My impression as a whole is that Puerto Rico just does not embrace tourism like Mexico does. We won't be returning to Puerto Rico. Mexico here we come.

“Fun in the Sun”

We (myself, my husband and 2 teenage sons) just spent 4 nights at the Courtyard during Spring break, March 26-30. I booked 2 rooms through marriott.com and then emailed Alfredo, the assistant general manager to request that the rooms be close to one another. Thank you Alfredo for the wonderfully located rooms. Breakfast and watching the sunset on the lanai was superb.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Courtyard. The staff were all very kind and willing to help you, especially the guys on the beach. We basically spent our days on the beach sunning ourselves and boogie boarding (we brought our own). As for the comments from others about the airplane noise--I looked at it this way, those on the airplane were leaving and we were still on the beach! The noise did not bother us.

In the evening our family would walk to the local restaurants and enjoy the local cuisine. After resting on the beach all day we needed a little exercise. On Saturday night we stayed at the hotel and enjoyed the buffet dinner at the Salsa Restaurant. We really enjoyed the roasted pig and other local foods.

Overall we had a great 5 days/4 night vacation at the Courtyard and would not hesitate on returning again.

“Relaxing but expensive”

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

2 of 5 stars
Toronto, Canada
Apr 1, 2008

This was my first trip to Puerto Rico and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I met up with some of my girlfriends for a relaxing time (to enjoy the beach, pool, and food) during the spring recess. The hotel, beach, pool, and restaurants were all clean and enjoyable. But, the restaurants were very expensive. Good, but expensive. No food or drink is "affordable" here. Also, no room service. At least it gave us something to talk about (expensive food that is). Also made a few calls to housekeeping since I was shorted on the towels etc but nobody ever came. Customer service doesn't seem to be their selling point. Maybe the staff is all too busy?

“Really Great Spot”

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

We just spent six nights at this hotel and had a completely fine time.

Here are some of the positives:

- extremely well run
- friendly and accomodating staff; particularly concierge, wait staff, front desk
- fun and free entertainment
- clean and perfectly air conditioned room; fine housekeeping
- fabulous beach, very good pools
- attractive and well maintained grounds; wonderful sunsets!
- great location near airport, bus line (we used the A5 into Old Town), rain forest, museums and attractions of San Juan and Old San Juan, nearby small towns.
- fair 'hotel' prices in bars and restaurants, where the food could be very, very good

There's a small casino we did not visit.

I travel a great deal on business and pleasure and if you read my reviews on tripadvisor you know I hold no prisoners. So many American resorts are like our major airlines (e.g American, the one we flew down from Boston on): miserable customer service, lack of attention to detail, ripoff prices. So if I had a beef you would hear about it here! I simply do not.

Of course, there are always little glitches, and here are a couple:

- there must have been molasses in the wireless/ethernet system; communication was often at a turtle's pace, but they did offer wireless in rooms (!) and there was a nice business center to take up slack.; if you go try to use it off hours

- service in the more expensive outdoor restaurant could be very slow, and one evening an appetizer was forgotten (quickly made up by free wine), though we thought the food extremely good. In the indoor restaurant service was over the top friendly (at one point we had female staff fighting over who was helping us the most!) and, happily, they had a standard menu, not buffet every night.

The airplane noise issue was there, but it was something most folks just laughed off; my thought was that the hotel should provide a printout of departures so we could try to check on what plane was going where in the world. Our room was pretty well soundproofed.

Some things we enjoyed particularly included the magnificent National Gallery and the Puerto Rican Museum of Art (with a wonderful garden and absolutely five star food). The former has a breathtaking lighting system to illuminate landscapes by Oller and other famous PR painters; just magnificent and maybe the highlight of our trip.

We went to a a very good beach restaurant over at Pinones (Soliel), and enjoyed a free pickup and return., and Roberto, our tour guide to the rain forest was great; he imparted a tremendous amount of information on Puerto Rico and the gorgeous forest. The fact that the day the PR governor and some buddies were arrested by the feds for corruption led to some wonderful background political info and constant updates on 'breaking news'.

Oh, if you do travel American AIrlines avoid the bar-restaurant near gate 7. Ultimately you will have to choose between your flight and food; just about the worst service we've ever had anywhere and for crying out loud they are in an airport!

So to sum up, our first trip to Puerto Rico was very enjoyable and it was made better by one of the best resorts of its kind we have ever visited; as a regular Marriott user I was very pleased because some Courtyards can be pretty scruffy. This place is clean, efficient, friendly, well-located, fairly priced and not pretentious. I suspect we'll go back!

“Some Nice Features ... Service Bad”

Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

2 of 5 stars
Philadelphia, PA

My family of four (including two boys, 9 and 10) stayed for six nights. The hotel itself is close to attractions as we visited Old San Juan, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens ... along with relaxing at the hotel. The restaurants are pretty good and allow you to sample some Puerto Rican cuisine. We had a beach front room so sitting out on the balcony was a favourite pastime. Both the beach and pool areas are nice as well. The rooms are nice and clean. Now to the bad! I made a pre-arrival request that was acknowledged by the hotel, but wasn't done when I arrived. At the time of booking, the hotel and their website will tell you about a Kids Club. But once at the hotel we had a hard time finding anyone that knew anything about it (including the concierge). When we did find someone, at the casino, we found out that the Kids Club is only on weekends ... and only some weekends ... and wasn't operating the weekend we were there. Too bad they weren't truthful about this beforehand as that was one criteria we had for choosing our our hotel. The housekeeping is unacceptable. On many days we left the hotel by 8am ... put out the sign to indicate we wanted the room cleaned ... and arrived back at 5pm to find the room still untouched. When I went to the front desk to request an earlier housekeeping time the person was very rude and acted like I was nuts for thinking housekeeping could be done before 5pm. Frankly, the physical hotel itself is OK with a good location on the beach ... the service is terrible. I'd advise a stay somewhere else.
