“Service with a smile!”

Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel, Spa & Casino

4 of 5 stars
New York
May 2, 2008

Although I prefer a smaller, more boutique type of hotel, this property is very nice. All the people we encountered who work there were so friendly and helpful. Jessica at the concierge was wonderful! We stayed on the club level which was very convenient and saved us money on lunch by the pool which is not great. Breakfast at Mares has a big, quite good buffet.
Going into Old San Juan was so easy by taxi. Our favorite restauarants there were Dragonfly and Baru. Chayote in Condado was great too.
We mostly relaxed at the beach. The sand is not that beautiful white sand found at other Caribbean islands, but it is fine and the water is crystal clear and must have been in the low 80's. You don't have to worry about stepping on anything either. It's just all sandy at the bottom.
It was great to be so close to the airport. The sound of the planes taking off & landing is not an issue at all. They don't fly overhead as it is about a mile down the beach and off to the side. Between the waves crashing and the breeze blowing, you can hardly hear the planes and just see them in the distance.
One day we rented a car and drove about 45 minutes to the rain forest. We hiked to a beautiful waterfall and went swimming there. That was a great experience. Enjoy!

“Don't be fooled by the brand-name!”

This hotel is like paying for a BMW and driving a Hyundai (no offense to the Korean car lovers!). If you have ever stayed at other RC properties you will immediately notice the difference. This hotel will still give you a nice room with an exceptionally comfortable bed, but the ridiculously long front desk line and lack of service and security will make the 17 dollar Mojitos and 30 dollar breakfast buffet hard to enjoy.
Let’s start with the “missing” cell phone that disappeared from the surf shop counter in 2 minutes and the complete lack of cooperation or assistance from the hotel management. I believe that the unusual circumstances of the loss of the cell phone (Almost a witnessed theft), and RC being in such a “name” resort would prompt some action by the management to maybe smooth over the actions of a certain employee or at least to make some gesture to appease two very irate guests who lost their only mobile source of communication with their 15 month old in NY. But unfortunately we got shifted through all the different levels of management to leave with a 50 dollar credit to our room… or two and a half Mojitos!
Our mini bar was raided by the previous occupants of the room who left us a half-eaten Snickers bar and Vodka and Gin bottles that were opened and refilled with water … real classy! Despite our repeated phone calls to the front desk we checked out 4 days later with the same bottles in the mini bar and a late discovered $3.75 charge for the chocolate bar!
The beach is very nice, but the water is very shallow with lots of rocks and coral that make swimming a bit challenging.
The casino is elegant but small. Only half of the tables games are staffed even on the busiest nights and the tables can go from a $5 dollar minimum to $25 in 15 minutes. Brings lots of cash and patience.
Overall it was an OK experience, but you can have a better experience at the Marriott in Condado for ½ the price.

“Ritz????”

Stayed at the Ritz for 3 nights on a girls' weekend and I wouldn't return. The resort was filled with unchaperoned children, to the point where we couldn't eat outside because of too many noisy children taking over the outside tables The hot tub was cold and again filled with kids. The service was OK. They did give us a changing room because we had a late flight out. There is no night life at this hotel. Try the San Juan down the street, especially on Saturday nights. Drinks were $15 with tip...This Ritz property doesn't live up to the reputation. Too bad, since there are so many choices along the Carolina strip.

“It is what it is!!”

First, let's be clear--this is not a Mandaran Oriental or a Four Seasons. There is some airport noise and you can sometimes smell the fumes when you are on the beach. The Old City is just a tad too far away. The BLT Steak is poor and Il Mulino is even worse. The prices are what you would expect.

However, to look on the bright side you can have a very nice stay. Our room (floor 8 Ocean View) was pretty nice and worth the daily $700 or so. The service was excellent--friendly helpful people always. It was a delight to see all the smiling faces of the staff. The resort is bright and cheerful and everything seems to work--plenty of chairs and towels, nice breakfast buffet served well, nice views from everywhere.

Is there a better place for a quick getaway in San Juan--I haven't found it yet.

“Nothing Special”

I spent 3 days at the ritz with high hopes. This place is not much to write about. The check in was slow, they did noot have my room ready until 5:30. The rooms are small and very comfortable but nothing exciting. The people are friendly with the exception of the pool side lunch place. They are more interested in ignoring the customer than servicing your needs. The beach guys are nice and will help with any request for 20 bucks. Blt was slow but good food. The casino is full of local old ladies who line up on the slot machines. There is no action at night, i suggest walking to the el san juan there lobby is always the hottest place in pr. So the rits is not really a ritz its just a nice room on a nice beach
