“Great stay at El Conquistador”

My husband and I stayed at the El Conquistador February 13-17, 2008. We were vacationing with 2 other couples and had an absolutely wonderful time. The El Conquistador staff was excellent; the grounds were gorgeous, the spa (which I used for the exercise room (very good) and the classes (terrific instructors)) was a big plus to my stay, and our room was more than we could have hoped for (marina and ocean view). Another couple stayed in a marina room -- very nice -- and another couple in a room overlooking the pool. All the rooms had nice views and were well appointed with big bathrooms. We enjoyed one day at Palomino Island (the restaurant/bar on the island had really good food and drinks) and my husband and some of our friends played golf one day. They said it was a great course. Other than that, we ate, drank, and lounged! We don't usually choose a vacation at a resort but since we were getting together with friends we felt like this was the way to go and it turned out so much better than we expected. We actually went on a 10 day sail with other friends immediately after this stay so it was good to have a little luxury before "roughing" it!

“Great Place!”

El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa

Just got back from Puerto Rico and the hotel. We had a very pleasant stay at the hotel. The grounds are fabulous. The view from the top level of the hotel looking east out onto the Caribbean Sea is breath taking. On a clear day you can actually see St. Thomas along with the other Puerto Rican Virgin Islands of Viegus, Culebra, and the hotels own Palomino Island. From the western side of the resort you can enjoy the view of the beautiful golf course, and the majestic El Yunque Mountain and the other Caribbean National Rain forest mountain ranges. At first we were disappointed. We were to stay in a partial ocean view room, but we were upgraded to an ocean view room in the Marina section, because of a convention that took all of the double queen beds. The room was clean and neat. The Bellhop Juan was very pleasant and informative. We are from Orlando and have stayed at several Disney resorts. In cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms and hallways and certain minor repairs needed El Conquistador does not compete with Disney. When it comes to layout of the resort and the cliff side setting it beats Disney hands down. Please be sure that you rent a car, unless of course you are loaded. The restaurants are all expensive, but we knew that ahead of time. The four of us had breakfast in Las Brisas Restaurant one morning. Bill including tip was $90.00. We basically ate outside of the hotel. Plenty of Creole and American fast food restaurants. Palomino Island was awesome, beautiful waters and beaches. We plan to stay there again.

“Best Vacation if you're willing to spend a lot!”

This place was a paradise! I went with 4 other friends for 5 days. The excellent things about this place is that it has its own clean, beautiful private island with snorkeling, kayaking and gorgeus jacuzzis. The views at day and nighttime were unforgettable! this resort even had its own casino!

I would recommend this place for couples, families and friends. the only negative is that everything is very expensive so it would only be fun if you're ready to spend a lot of money.

“Great Getaway!”

We loved this hotel. Really nice pools and jacuzzis. Staff were really friendly. The property is a very isolated large land and gives you a chance to get away and relax. The hotel has a water park for kids and gives the adults a chance to hang out by the pool without kids screaming and yelling. The beach accessability is not great because you have to take a fairy to get to the private island Palmolino, but once you do it is prestine. The water level is really shallow and gives you a chance to relax without worrying about the waves crashing on you. The food was extremely pricy and we didn't know if we were in Puerto Rican hills or Beverly Hills. For next time, I will definitely choose an all inclusive hotel in Dominican Republic (next door) over this.

“Beautiful but overpriced”

El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa

My boyfriend and I stayed here for four nights in May based upon a recommendation of a friend. I read the reviews about the hotel being overpriced but since I was able to find a deal on their website through AMEX (buy 3 nights, get the fourth free) we decided to go. Overall, my impression is mixed. On the positive side, we had a BEAUTIFUL room. It was an ocean view, in the new wing in the main building. The hotel itself was beautiful, we enjoyed the pools and the food was good (even though it was ridiculously overpriced). Also, if you come here to play golf, the courses looked amazing. Additionally, I think that if we had kids with us, this would also be a nice self-contained, fun and safe place to stay for a family. The bad things are the parking ($15 day for self-park inconveniently located 10 minutes away from the hotel), the 14% resort fee to allegedly pay for the catamaran that takes you to Palomino Island. Also, the area around the resort is not great so you are pretty isolated here and should just plan to enjoy your evenings in the resort and pay high prices for dinner. I think that we enjoyed our stay because we had already stayed in San Juan and Culebra during our trip so we didn't feel like we were missing out on other areas of the island. I wouldn't be happy had we just stayed here and nowhere else in Puerto Rico because there was nothing Puerto Rican about this place. The hotel is close to the Yunque Rainforest which we visited with our rental car (we heard that the resort overcharges for their tours so if you want to do this, get your own car and drive there yourself). In fact, the hotel also overcharges for their airport shuttle so you may as well get a rental car at the airport so you have the ability to go sightseeing or buy groceries! The rental car may cost you the same as their airport shuttle! We also were able to take the bio-bay tour one night at Vieques Island with East Island Excursions and that was fantastic (book this directly with East Island and not through the hotel)!
