“stay away from this hotel”

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel

Jul 21, 2008

stayed at this hotel after booking it on Kayak.com Hotel room was dirty, and there were numerous bugs in the bathroom and in our bed. We stayed a couple years ago and it was okay then but has really gone down hill. The breakfast was horrible and they would not allow us to eat very much. I would recommend staying at the Monarch over this hotel and it is slightly cheaper. At check in the front desk seemed unhappy about something and they lost our reservations. I produced the confirmation number and it took 20 minutes to get check in. Under no circumstances would I stay there again. If you do bring Raid!

“Quiet, central and affordable”

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Melbourne, Australia
Jul 20, 2008

The location was great - though a couple of streets back from the beach we had fantastic views of the mountains and the canal. Our room was quiet and a bit snug but perfect for what we needed - somewhere to sleep! Do not get too excited but the prospect of breakfast included - stale miniature croissants, pieces of toast and tea/coffeee in styrofoam cups is certainly nothing for this hotel to boast about as a 'Continental Breakfast'. The front desk staff were also quite rude and unhelpful.

“Waikiki Sand Villa was lovely”

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Austin, Texas
Jul 10, 2008

My husband and I stayed here in May 2007. I'm a bit late with my review but figured someone would enjoy the pictures!

Overall, I really enjoyed this hotel and would certainly stay here again. The rooms were clean. They are not fancy and there were some scuffs on the wall that were repainted, etc. These aren't the types of things that bother me. I was comfortable and the price was right so it was very easy to overlook some cosmetic things.

The pool area was fantastic. I thought it was really beautiful & very tropical. We spent most of an afternoon hanging around the pool area and I consider it time well spent since it was so pretty. The free breakfast was good enough to get us going in the morning. While there wasn't a ton of variety, it tasted good and it was very pleasant to eat on the patio next to the pool. This is a great way to start your day in Hawaii!!

The location of the hotel is terrific. Just a few blocks from the ocean, we could easily walk to many other hotels and restaurants, as well as Waikiki Beach. I felt comfortable walking back to the hotel after dark because there always seemed to be people out & about. However, some people might be wary of this since you go through a small area of less touristy (more residential type apartments) and it is not brightly lit (although there are streetlights...it isn't dark by any means...just be aware that the main street--Kalakaua Ave.--is brighter).

The view from our hotel room was lovely. We had a wrap around balcony so I could see both the view towards Waikiki (even a bit of the ocean) and the golf course that is on the back side of the hotel. Both were beautiful views.

“It was just okay”

I booked the room quite some time ago online via the hotel's website. Since I booked online I got 50% off parking. What would have been $15/daily parking was offered to me at $7.50. That was quite a deal because hotels all around us were offering parking for $15-$25. When we got to the hotel, we found out that self-park was not available and it was all valet parking. $7.50 per day was a steal!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Upon our check in, I thought it was a little odd when they asked that all parties staying at the hotel each show a picture ID. Other hotels need only one ID out of their group but since It was part of the Waikiki Sand Villa's security policy, I didn't mind complying. The hospitality room had up-to-date computers, fast connection, and a copier/fax machine.

We were placed in a room overlooking Diamond Head. According to the hotel's room map, we were in a deluxe room. The room was just okay. The beds in the room were a double and a single bed and they were comfortable. The air conditioner was not functioning properly. Since the air conditioner wasn't generating enough cold air to cool the room, we opted to sleep with the sliding door open. In the middle of the night and the early morning hours, we were woken by loud music or shouts from the street below. The carpet was just absolutely filthy and needed to be replaced like three years ago.

In my book this property is considered a low-budget hotel. The pros outweight the cons and if you don't mind a filthy carpet and being only a 5-minute walk to the beach, then you should consider staying at this hotel.

“Great Location”

Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel

4 of 5 stars
London, United Kingdom
May 21, 2008

Just got back from a two week stay at the Waikiki Sand Villa. What a bargain!

All the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The pool area was always tidy and lovely and quiet.

Yes, the breakfast was nothing to write home about, but it was free and fresh and you could always go down the road to Dennys or IHOP if you fancied the full works.

The internet room was excellent. So convenient to check your e-mails or look into trips, though the lady who runs the travel desk in the lobby was more than helpful.

The location was fantastic. Just a short walk to the beach and all the razzle dazzle of Waikiki!

The only negative was the bar. We decided to eat in there one night, but found that the bar staff could not be dragged away from the locals around the bar. The food was acceptable but not great.

Shop around for excursions. We found a round island trip for half the price that Expedia were offering and it was great. We saw everything the other trips were offering and were taken to a great shrimp wagon for lunch.

Would definitely go back to the Sand Villa. For the price it is in an excellent location and has everything you need.
