We had lunch on a previous trip to Honolulu at Gyotaku Restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The food was good and authentic Japanese cuisine. The service was also good. Food came out fairly quickly after the order was put in.
This past weekend we were back in Honolulu and decided to try dinner at Gyotaku. The food again was very good and came out fast, even though the place was crowded with patrons. The dinner menu is slightly higher in price than the lunch specials, but there is more food that comes with it. We were unable to finish all of our meals. There was an early bird menu but we got there too late for that.
The prices are very reasonable for what you get. Lunch averages around $15 and dinner was around $18. They come with rice, pickles, miso soup, salad, and your entree(s). There is a lunch menu that allows you to choose 2 or 3 entrees, and a dinner menu with 3 or 4 entrees. There is a wide variety of choices--noodles, sushi, tempura, seafood, etc. The green salad comes with a big piece of crab leg already peeled. Even the rice was fluffy and of good quality.
They do not take reservations (first come, first served) but we only waited around 5 minutes to get seated. The place was packed, but the restaurant can seat quite a bit with both downstairs and upstairs seating.
We will definitely make this place a regular stop every time we go to Honolulu. There is another Gyotaku Restaurant in Pearl City near the Pearlridge Mall.
