My eldest son and I spent one night at Costa Dorada Beach Resort as part of a trip to Aguadilla and the Ramey AFB where Id been stationed (1968-1970). The hotel was easy to get to (if you're bilingual or have better maps than we did) and the staff was generally friendly and helpful. The on-site restaurant, where we ate supper and breakfast, was an open air, covered patio sort of deal with a bar right next to it. Techno music was pouring out of a boom box at the bar in the evening & the service was fairly good. Made for an interesting dinner, which was not all that exceptional.
Our room was on the second floor of one of the wings of the main building. The AC was somewhat noisy, but the worst part of it was the way the room was laid out: the person sleeping near the outside wall (and thus, near the AC unit) was blasted in the face with cold, somewhat damp air. (I stuck a chair in the way and laid one of the pillows across the back of the chair to redirect the air flow away from my face.)
The weakest moment of our stay was the morning after breakfast when we checked out. When we brought our bags downstairs, I asked my son to go back up to the room and get the TV remote before we checked out. While he was gone, one of the grounds people was talking to the two women at the registration desk. Thinking that I was not bilingual, he made the comment in Boricua that I should have gone to Aguadilla to pick up some gay boy. (He used the term maricón, a somewhat demeaning term for gays.) I thought about what hed said for a minute and was almost about to say something about his indiscrete statement when my son returned with the TV remote. We signed out & left.
If the comment from this hotels staff person was any sign of the way they view their clientele, I dont think Ill be going back there again.
