We were going with friends to Phildelphia over New Year's, and they recommended staying at the Sheraton Society Hill. We were traveling with two families, both families had children ages 7 and 3.
We checked in about an hour after check-in time, only to be told that one of the rooms wasn't ready yet. They immediately gave us access to their club level lounge to accommodate for this error.
When we arrived at the rooms, they were not adjoining -- a request that we had directly arranged with the hotel ahead of time. Also, one of the rooms only had one king size bed, although we had requested two double beds so that we could accommodate our children. We were told that there were no other adjoining rooms available, but they could give us two rooms close to each other.
When we arrived at our new room, our toilet wasn't working. We called the front desk and were told that it would be taken care of.
Then we went swimming at the indoor pool during the early evening. There were no clean, dry towels available. My husband called the front desk 4 times (over the course of 1 hour and 20 minutes) to ask that someone bring dry towels. The kids were cold and tired. Finally, when someone from the front desk arrived (without towels) at the pool, they had vouchers for free breakfast at the hotel to apologize.
On New Year's Eve day, my husband was told by a parking attendant that the hotel garage was completely full. He said that if we wanted to use our car that evening, then we would need to park in another garage. We were paying $28 per day to park there.
Our toilet continued to work sporadically, and upon going out for an early dinner on New Year's Eve, the hotel said they would try to fix the toilet one more time. If it couldn't be fixed, then they had told me they would give me a room down the hall -- they even gave me a specific room number that they were holding. Upon returning from dinner around 9m, they told me that the toilet could not be fixed and that the room they had promised was no longer available. I asked them what they thought I should do, and they told me to share the toilet in my friend's room! I asked to speak to a manager, but there was no manager on duty! I finally insisted that they move our room as I wouldn't sleep in a room without a working toilet. I also told them that there was no way we would pay for our room, and they agreed to "comp" our stay. We ended up moving our room to a different floor.
The hotel on New Year's eve was completely full, and very noisy. The hotel staff (maintenance and housekeeping) complained to me privately saying that the hotel was very poorly run, and there was no manager around. Housekeeping was cleaning rooms at all hours of the day, including during the evening which I found a bit surprising. Also, there were dirty room service dishes in all the hallways that took hours to be picked up.
The one positive comment was the hotel's location which was downtown in the historic part of the city.
I was so disappointed by our stay that I contacted Sheraton upon our return. I did speak with a manager who apologized and set gave me some points so that we would consider staying at one of their hotels again.
The hotel was definitely not prepared for the volume of guests who were there during my stay. My friends were embarrassed as they had initially recommended the hotel. While the hotel tried to make some attempt at apologizing, I would have rather stayed in a well-run hotel.
