“a good reliable place -- but expensive!”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

Feb 27, 2008

The Marriott Gaslamp is a well-run hotel in all aspects. However, it is rather expensive -- even for a quality chain hotel. Perhaps its proximity to Petco Park (home of the San Diego Padres) is the reason...but almost $400 a night (including the taxes) seems a bit steep. (This was the internet rate.) The room was a big one -- with all the facilities. Breakfast is extra -- but it is a good buffet breakfast with lots of choice (about $40 for two people), Valet parking ($30 per night) also seems a bit much. (We parked in a garage across the street.) The staff were very considerate and helpful; it was they who suggested parking across the street to save the outrageous valet parking fee. So -- if you are willing to pay such a price, it's a good hotel! And -- it is in a convenient location -- the Gaslamp Quarter is within easy walking distance --with lots of good restaurants and interesting streetscapes.

“Convenient Hotel to Major Attractions”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

I stayed at this hotel for a major conference. It sits downtown, across the highway from the San Diego Convention Center. I am usually not a fan of Marriott Hotels, but this particular location was well appointed. The hotel definitely had a boutique feel from the lobby to the modern rooms. The negatives to this hotel would be the lack of a pool and the restaurant which is overpriced. We received a pass to swim at the Marriott Towers nearby on the water, but it was a good 6+ block walk in a swimsuit and that pool was so packed with people you couldn't move. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant (only once), which was more than $10 for a danish and orange juice about the same quality as the 7-11 sells for $1.49. We never made it to the rooftop bar, but I understand that is quite popular during the evening. Fortunately the hotel sits at the beginning of the Gaslamp Quarter, so you can walk to many nearby restaurants that cost less and taste better than the hotel food. Probably the best reason to stay at this hotel is to see a San Diego Padres baseball game. Their beautiful new stadium sits right next to this hotel, so you can definitely walk over and enjoy all the beer you want before safely returning to your room. This hotel had valet parking, but we were also allowed to self-park at the garage directly across the street and had no problem with that. Easy to access, except maybe on a game day. Besides walking to the Gaslamp Quarter, you can also walk 4 or so blocks from this hotel to the convention center and a bit farther down the water to Seaport Village for more shopping. You wouldn't really need a car at this hotel to see several major downtown attractions, but it's good to have one for going out to Balboa Park, the zoo, Seaworld, Old Town, the beaches, etc. If you can get a good rate at this hotel, book it. Can't imagine anything more convenient.

“Perfect Business Hotel”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

This hotel has everything the business traveler needs and then some. The complex is enormous, with restaurants, shops, gym, etc. -- you'd never really need to leave the hotel except right outside the door is the fabulous gas lamp district with great food, bars & shopping. on the other side of the hotel is the harbor and a running/bike path. i had a harbor view and and a very large room. it seemed to be a very family friendly establishment, as well.

“Didn't want to leave!”

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

5 of 5 stars
Augusta, Georgia
Jan 23, 2008

I recently stayed at this property while attending a trade show held at the convention center. Not only was this a great location in close proximity to the convention center, but it was just a great hotel! The staff was very helpful, everything was very clean, and I loved the decor. I also loved San Diego and didn't want to leave the city or this hotel! I was upgraded to a water view room though and have to agree with other travelers that I would not have wanted to pay extra for this since another hotel is now blocking a good bit of the view, but it was still a nice view. (And the only reason I was upgraded was because I called to say I was going to be a late arrival, and my traveling companion would not be with me so I would take a king instead of a double if available, and when I arrived they didn't have any more kings so that is why they upgraded me.) I would definitely stay here again in the future.
