“Ok Stay”

Westin Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

We are Starwood Prefered members, so we stayed on the hotel using points. We were upgraded to a premium suite. We had a travel party of three. Two adults and a 6 year old child.

Negatives: The hotel aims to portrait a calm relaxing atmosphere however it hosts many events. So the lobby is often more a revolving door than a tranquil place. During our one week stay they hosted people for the Rock'N Roll Marathon, two High School proms, two large training events, and the Mexican National soccer team. With the later, the hotel was a mad house. For security reasons, all guests were hassled while arriving and withing the lobby.

There is no self-parking and we did not like to have to use the valet all of the time (at a cost of $30.00 per night). We stayed on a premium room and it was just OK. Our room was nothing special. There was no Disney channel. The pool was small and the surrounding pool area a mess at the end of the day (towels and food left everywhere). The shower had low water preasure. The bathroom had no lock. On our last day, the elevators were being worked on and the wait was 15 minutes. The toiled was loud and you had no trouble hearing your neighboors flush.

Location: The location is questionable. The hotel is about a block from a Greyhound station. A walk in the morning is not very relaxing as most of the poeople arround appear to be homeless.

Plus: The bed was AWESOME. The shower had two shower heads. There is a Starbucks in the lobby.

Note: During this trip we also stayed at the Marriott Marina. Between the two, I would definitely pick the Marriott Marina.

“Westin Horton Plaza”

Westin Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

Jun 12, 2008

Husband and I stayed at the Westin Horton Plaza for 2 nights. Our flight arrived late at night in San Diego so we were very pleased of its proximity to the airport (literally 5 minutes away). Nothing really spectacular about the hotel, but very clean. I was annoyed at the fact that there was only valet parking available, but since I received a good deal on Priceline, I really couldn't complain that much. For those of you who are Starbucks junkies, there is a Starbucks within a very short walking distance. . No fridge in the room we were in, bed was comfortable and we had a decent city view. Overall, not a bad hotel, but definitely nothing to brag about.

“Great experience!”

Westin Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

5 of 5 stars
Grantville, KS
Jun 10, 2008

We booked the hotel through Priceline, so didn't actually know which hotel we'd get until after we booked. We wanted to be in the downtown area for a pre-cruise overnight stay. We'd read rather negative reviews about the hotel, but since we booked through Priceline, we couldn't change reservations.

So glad we didn't! They were very accommodating and helpful, and it is a very nice hotel, clean, great location, many amenities. We arrived about 10 or 10:30 am, and asked if we could leave our luggage while we did some sightseeing, since check-in wasn't until 2 or 3 pm. They allowed us to go ahead and check in, and the bellhop was very friendly, and gave us lots of suggestions for things to do in the area, restaurants, etc. They also allowed us late checkout, so we didn't have to store luggage between checkout and boarding our cruise ship (and they didn't charge us anything extra). We were very impressed with the level of service and the friendliness of the staff.

The double queen room on the 10th floor was not huge, but we had plenty of room. The bath was a nice size, with an oversize vanity and plenty of counter space. The bed was indeed very comfortable! We have a Tempurpedic bed at home, so are always very skeptical of how comfortable beds will be when we travel, but their "heavenly beds" live up to the name. You could see the harbor from our window.

The hotel is located next to Horton Plaza and is close to the Gaslamp District, so shopping/restaurants/entertainment are very close by. Most of our time was spent around the harbor and Coronado Island, although the Macy's a couple of doors down was handy when the temperature hit the mid-90's (we'd brought clothing for an early Alaska cruise, not summer wear!). It was probably a 10-15 minute walk downhill to the harbor, but of course it was uphill back to the hotel! (or a short taxi ride)

We didn't use any of the restaurants/gym/etc. at the hotel, so cannot comment on them.

A very good experience, and we would recommend it. It was an expensive hotel (for us!), but even the Holiday Inn & Best Western downtown were around $150/night at the end of April, so for a little extra money we enjoyed a much nicer property.

“Not great but certainly nice”

Westin Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego

3 of 5 stars
Bellevue, WA
Jun 7, 2008

This hotel is located in a great location if wish to be close to the Gaslamp Quarter, which contains lots of great restaurants. The hotel itself is somewhat dated, especially when compared to other Westin properties I've stayed at. The elevators that other reviewers have been and are still being renovated, but I had no problems them. The two restaurants in the hotel are average at best and the prices are quite high considering the quality of the food.

The staff at the Westin were very polite and very knowledgeable in all respects. The concierge's were especially helpful with any issue and know the Quarter's restaurants very well. Every one of their recommendations was right on the money.

In summary this hotel is average for a Westin property with a great location and great staff who provided excellent service.
