We picked the Sommerset Suites because of its location, and that did not disappoint. It's very convenient to SeaWorld, Balboa Park, and the airport (it took us about 10 minutes to get to the airport early in the morning on the way out). Parking was fairly easy despite the fact that we had a minivan.
It's clear that this place used to be an apartment building. The 1 bedroom "suite" we had reminded me of the cruddy apartment I had in college. It was serviceable but not at all nice. Mold on the walls, bedroom door would not shut all the way. On the plus side it had a fully kitted out kitchen with utensils, etc. We had a nice balcony that overlooked the hospital next door, which provided a little show one evening for the kids as a medevac helicopter landed and later took off from the roof of the emergency room next door. Luckily it wasn't in the middle of the night.
The service was way above what you'd expect in a place like this. The front desk staff was very cheerful, the continental breakfast room staff was also friendly, but the real test was when our daughter had an accident in the bathtub during a bath and when we phoned to get cleaner to clean it up, we got a very quick response (although no offer to clean it up themselves which I wouldn't have expected :).
There are quite a few nice restaurants within walking distance in the Hillcrest area, just a few blocks away. I have to advise giving the "City Deli" a miss as I got horrible food poisoning probably from there (and the food was pretty mediocre too). In retrospect we should have gone to the Corvette Diner as I had originally planned.
The kids enjoyed the pool which got a little chilly due to the shade in the afternoon (it's in a courtyard in the middle of the building), and it was a little smelly too.
If you are looking for a 1 bedroom place near the zoo and Seaworld, the Sommerset Suites will fit the bill. Just don't expect the Ritz Carlton.
