“Comfy and Awesome Location!”

Powell Hotel

Feb 17, 2008

I'm a college student, and I needed a good budget hotel to stay in within the city for an interview. I was very surprised and pleased that I was able to find such a good hotel within my budget! They staff was wonderful, I had a late flight into SFO, and had mentioned it to the person I booked with-when I arrived, they immediately knew who I was, asked about my flight, etc. Room was small, but expected since it's an older restored buidling. But you definitely could not beat the location! So convenient to everything! I would totally recommend this to anyone who wants to stay in San Fran and sight see, be comfortable, and stay within a certain budget.

It does get noisy at times-but hey. when you stay in the middle of a city you expect that. Overall, I LOVED my stay there and would totally recommend it to anyone going to san fran!

“Hidden gem for budget traveler”

Powell Hotel

Feb 9, 2008

Booked it while attending a conference in SF. The conference hotel is too expensive and many attendees chose this as the overflow alternate. For budget minded travel that wanted a decent stay but not hostels, this is the place. You really cannot beat it with its location. With BART,MUNI,cable car station right at the door step of hotel.

However, the room is a bit dated although newly renovated. Old time smell permeates the place like one earlier post suggested. However the bed is comfortable as it comes with many pillows!

The noise from the bustiling Powell and Market street plus the "ding ding" sound from cable car is bearable. Just make sure you choose the higher floor to avoid that.

This hotel only has a small breakfast/snack bar, but with its location right at the central downtown, basically you can find all sorts of restaurants, outlets.

“Loved it, loved it, loved it....”

Low expectations were afoot when we arrived at the Powell- it was cheaply priced with no restaurant. We soon learned not to judge too soon. The hotel staff were genuinely enthusiastic and welcoming and literally couldn't do enough for us. The central location meant we didn't notice the absence of a dining room.

In fact the location and quirky old school rooms really made our stay in SF! It was a joy to escape Holiday Inn decor in favour of solid furniture and personlaity. The location was second to none and we cannot wait to return to this hidden gem!

“Friendly, Cozy, but not a Bible-Free Powell”

Powell Hotel

I actually rather enjoyed my stay at the Powell Hotel. It was a little difficult to find at first, but after a couple days, I got to enjoy its low profile. The staff were really friendly and helpful, and watched our bags even after we had checked out since we were still attending a conference.

The room had a great "older" feeling to it. I liked how it was not the typical square room. The room was small, but cozy. And while all of my needs were met, I was insulted by the presence of a Bible in the room. I understand this is pretty "standard" for hotels, but I will never give a 5 dot review for a Bible-Thumping Hotel. I look forward to "Bible-Free" hotel rooms.
