I stayed at the Parker the first week in March, 2008, after having read the reviews on TripAdvisor and getting a referral from an acquaintance who had stayed there once before. I had stayed at only one other guesthouse prior to this visit (Big Ruby's in Key West, Florida) and so I was very careful to do my research before committing (I usually prefer to stay at larger properties).
Keith & Troy were exceptionally professional and pleasant during my stay, as was the gentleman who peformed housekeeping (I didn't get his name).
I found the property to be very well maintained, clean and in what I considered to be a nice, residential area (considering most of San Francisco is quite "urban"). As stated countless times, there is a transit line that runs along the front of the property on Church Street, so I had specifically requested a room towards the rear of the property & on a higher floor; my requests were granted! My queen bed room (in what I believe is considered the "newer" building) overlooked the garden and back patio, which, even in early March was quite green & full of flowers. By the way, I had BRILLIANT weather the entire time there: blue skies, no fog, highs between 65-70F degrees! Light jacket weather the WHOLE time.
The room was a bit small, but this is to be expected in an urban environment like SFO. Housekeeping usually took place after 11:00 a.m., but this was o.k. as I like to sleep-in. The continental breakfast was fine (Yoplait yogurt, fresh fruit, cereals, milk, orange juice, coffee, make-your-own toast. I tried it the first day, but opted to go-out for breakfast on subsequent days.
There are several local restaurants within walking distance of the Parker. I was partial to CrepeVine, which was on Church, right before Market Street. Consistently good food, at reasonable prices.
I purchased a week-long transit pass at the Safeway at Church & Market and was able to ride the Metro, vintage streetcars and buses all around town with unlimited privileges. The pass even let me ride the famous Cablecars for a $1.00!
One of the primary reasons I chose the Parker was its proximity to Castro street and the nightlife. Most, if not all, of the more popular bars in Castro were certainly within walking distance of the Parker.
The Parker also offers internet access via a public computer for guests to use, for preparing maps, checkin-in for flights and printing boarding passes. However, if you have your own laptop with you, I found the free WiFi quite reliable during my entire stay.
I would definitely consider the Parker again if returning to SFO. The rooms & public areas were tastefully decorated & not "over-the-top" with the antique theme, but I'm partial to a more contemporary design.
All-in-all, I would give the Parker a 4.5 and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is gay or gay-friendly without hesitation.
