I found the Rainbow Inn on TripAdvisor. This bed and breakfast is in an exposed basement of a couples house. It includes kitchen, eating area bedroom area and large bath. It overlooks the pool and has a beautiful view. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners were helpful and hospitable. We felt the room was a bargian compared to Hawaiian prices in general. The area was quiet and the birds were lovely to watch in the morning.

“Going to The Rainbow Inn for third year in a row”

Rainbow Inn

Feb 7, 2008

It's private and quiet, beautiful pool and view......the hosts are discreet, the area is lovely.........not one thing we dislike. When we came home in 2007, we immediately made our reservations for 2008.

We were unfortunately very disappointed in the Rainbow Inn. There are sticky notes all over the property stating what you can do and what you cannot do. The queen size bed is a sofa bed and there is no central air conditioning. When we arrived the toilet would stick and we were asked to "jiggle" it to make certain it would not run. There is a note requesting that you lower the shades from the inside and the outside to alleviate the sun which defeats what the property does have which is a great view. If you enjoy your privacy--this is not the place for you. There is a pass thru door and the hosts come in and out of your space at will. We found this disturbing. Notes request that you use the wall air conditioner sparingly due to the high costs of electricity. I believe this cost should be included in the nightly rate. I relocated and the owners were unwilling to refund any of the $520.00 loss. Be cautious. They wrote to me and called their property a Mom and Pop shop. Please be prepared for this, so that you will not be sorely disappointed. Traveling to Hawaii is not an inexpensive trip and I hope this will help others to make appropriate accommodations.

Management Response

Rainbow Inn has been in operation since March 1984 and this is the first negative comment we have had written about it. We were so surprised and shocked when this older mom and grown son appeared at our door after a 2 night stay saying they were leaving. Up until that time they had made no complaints whatsoever. We were never given a chance to correct any problems they seem to have. The bed in R'bow Inn is not a sofa bed and many guests find it so comfortable they comment on it. The A/C is a quiet window unit and guests are free to use it anytime. Usually our place is very comfortable with our lovely trade breezes, but the A/C is certainly there to be used. We suggest shades be pulled during afternoon sun--if guests are going to be out --so the apartment will be cool when they return -- but why would one want to sit in a darken room if they were home? Yes, the toilet was sticking but a plumber had been called & was on his way. We do not enter Rainbow Inn without permission and other guests comment on the privacy of Rainbow Inn. This Mother and son did not give us a chance to make things right for them -- they just left. We were very sad at such a departure.

We loved Rainbow Inn. It was designed by someone with a wonderful sense of aesthetics and a true aloha spirit of hospitality. As others have indicated, there is a pool and an awesome view of Pearl Harbor. The studio has two levels to take full advantage of the view, and the space is artfully decorated. There are several sitting areas outside, each offering different experience of the harbor view and the landscaped property. Betty and Gene have provided everything one could possibly want or need in the bathroom, the kitchen, the beach equipment closet, and the information booklets that have been prepared. Another reviewer indicated that they could hear footsteps above; we could too, but it didn't bother us and certainly didn't disturb our sleep or our enjoyment of the experience.
A note on food: we live in NYC = good food is everywhere, anytime. After dinner at Monterey Seafood (the sweetest staff but awful food,) we quickly realized that we needed to plan -- we shopped at the nearby Times grocery and other places where local favorites are available, and enjoyed dinner by the pool, or we stopped in the middle of the day (loved the shrimp trucks on the North Shore) and ate lightly in the evening. Eating at "home," we could feast on the beauty of our view.. It was great.

We can't wait to return.

“The other reviews are right on!”

Rainbow Inn

Oct 2, 2007

Just got back from our stay at the Rainbow Inn and I see now why it got a 5-star "Excellent" rating from every other reviewer! It really is a great place to stay! The views are incredible, the pool is relaxing and private, and the location was easily accessible to everything! We loved being able to stock-up the kitchen with dinner things so we didn't have to eat out every night (unless you count eating dinner on the patio by the pool "eating out!") and they had all the supplies we could possibly need for going to the beach, taking a picnic lunch, etc. Tons of extra shampoo, lotions, and other toiletries as well in case you forgot anything! The accomodations are not fancy, but clean and practical. Our only (minor) complaint would be that we could hear Betty and Gene walking around upstairs and sometimes that was bothersome if we were trying to sleep in, but other than that we had no complaints!
