“Paradise and magic”

I travel a lot for business and have stayed in some of the nation's best hotels. This magical place outshines them all. The space is created with the greatest care and is designed to promote relaxation, peace and appreciation. You are surrounded by beautiful landscape, the rooms are immaculate and offer astonishing views, and the lovely food basket is prepared with great care. This wonderful place receives my highest recommendation. What's more, my two children (8 and 10) likewise appreciated the magic and happily declared this lodge their favorite of our time in Hawaii -- despite the lack of the big hotel trappings. To have my children speak to me in quiet awe of the time spent here just made our time there even more astonishing.

“Island Rainforest Paradise”

What a lovely place to stay! We couldn't have been happier our two nights at Volcano Village Lodge. We stayed in the Haleakala Lodge for 2 nights on our trip to the Big Island in May. It was perfect - the room was beautiful, luxurious and perfectly decorated. The view from our huge windows was gorgeous!!!

We felt as though we were sleeping directly in the rainforest, but with all the comforts of a 5-class hotel. The bed was so comfortable and inviting, and the little touches, such as the stove which kept me toasty at night and the dehumidifier which kept the room comfortable, made it even more perfect.

Also, there is something about this property that is just so peaceful and serene - we felt as though we were staying at a meditation retreat! The landscaping, done by Buddhist monks, is beautiful and maintains the feeling of being inside a rainforest. We did not get to try out the hot tub, but it looked quite inviting.

Kay was wonderful and made us feel right at home, while giving us perfect suggestions for things to do and places to eat.

The only drawback were the small bugs that we found in our room near our food on the last day - but we told Kay and she was quite reassuring that she would remedy the issue. For being in the middle of a forest, the room was remarkably bug-minimal; I get quite creeped out by insects but was still deleriously happy there!

“The only place to stay near Volcano National Park (and Hilo)”

Volcano Village Lodge was our choice after an extensive search for a comfortable and modern B&B to stay while we explored the Volcano National Park and other sites on the east side of the Big Island. From the website, you can tell how much detail and care is put into the property. The rooms are unique and absolutely beautiful. There is a calm about the whole place and Kay is the most wonderful host. The amenities, the bed, the shower, the furnishings are all new, clean, and modern without the intrusiveness or blandness of most hotels. It is worth the drive to this remote wooded lodge. We also felt it was reasonably close to the park and even Hilo (for our helicopter tour and such). There is no reason to stay anywhere else. Travelers with large groups or children might not want to stay here, but certainly this is a couples perfect getaway.

“Amazing place!”

Volcano Village Lodge

We only spent one night at the volcano village lodge and wished we could have been there for longer. We arrived at the lodge after a long, tiring day of hiking around the park. Once there, we were shown all the amazing details of our room, including flashlights, blankets, snacks and directions to the lava hike that night. We stayed in the smallest room, which is perfect for a couple on a romantic trip. When we returned from the hike, we enjoyed hot chocolate, an electric fireplace and CD's in the room. The morning breakfast was delicious and a perfect way to start the day. We left early, missing an opportunity to meet the owner, but met the gardener on our way out. He is delightful and it was a pleasure meeting the mastermind behind the lush landscaping. It's amazing that such a short visit left this much of an impression on us!

“Ending 2007 the Right Way!”

We found VVL by looking at reviews here on TA so I must write an excellent review to encourage others to book and stay here. We stayed the last few days of 2007 (sorry for the late review) and were so happy that we did. As others have already posted, Kay is excellent and has thought of everything for this charming retreat. Upon our arrival she gave us a brief tour of the property and Haleakala Lodge.
Haleakala was beautiful, relaxing, and romantic! The sound of the rain hitting the roof was the definition of peaceful and will be something that I never forget. My husband was frightened at first that there was no cable but did not mention it again because we stayed busy exploring Volcanoes National Park, reading, watching movies, enjoying the tranquil surroundings, etc.
The selection of breakfast foods were perfect! We were able to throw them in our backpacks and go. My husband is a very picky eater but he still was satisfied with what Kay had prepared.
We hope to return to VVL in the future!
