We just returned from a week-long stay at the Grotto Bay and it was fabulous!
My husband and I travelled with our two sons, ages 12 and 9 and we all truly enjoyed all that Bermuda offers both at the Grotto Bay and outside as well.
Our room was located on the second floor...balcony facing the ocean and bridge that links the road with the airport.
It was clean and quite spacious for a family of four. The only complaint is that the mattresses could use replacing...very much used and very bumpy. The a/c worked perfectly and sometimes was actually too cold! The bathroom had been renovated and it seems that all the rooms will be fully renovated as time goes on.
The property was very easy to manage and our location (Somerset) was ideal. We weren't too far from anything and didn't have many stairs to climb at any one time.
The food was truly excellent and we took advantage of the all-inclusive option which was great considering the full breakfast buffet would have cost $72 a day for the four of us. The wait staff was very friendly and once you are there a day or so, they certainly remembered you and would ask how everything was and what you had planned for the day.
The beach, although deceptively small, was wonderful. Very calm and clear and there was always enough room to spread out and plenty of chairs and umbrellas are available.
The cove where you can feed the numerous fish (!) was great for snorkeling and our kids loved feeding them daily.
We went out on kayaks (included with the ai option) which was great because the bay the hotel is on is totally protected with no waves to worry about.
There is also a "boatwreck" about 75 yards off the shore which is also great for snorkeling.
The caves on site were great because you can swim in them which is something you wouldn't be able to do anywhere in the States. The water although cold at first is so refreshing and we
thoroughly enjoyed having them on site. No need to go to Crystal Caves and pay...Grotto Bay has it all!!
We also enjoyed St. George's, Hamilton, The Dockyard, Devil's Hole (great for kids where they get to "fish" with hookless lines and "catch" sea turtles and nurse sharks), the Aquarium, and excellent reef fishing courtesy of the Ellen B...very HIGHLY recommended!!!! We also went to Horseshoe Bay beach which had some great waves and we could body surf all afternoon.
All in all, a wonderful trip to Bermuda...sorry we didn't visit sooner.
The Grotto Bay is the perfect site for families...plenty to do and quite comfortable without being too big.
The bartenders were not the nicest...they could use some additional training about customer satisfaction. Also, some of the guest services personnel were not as knowledgeable as we would have liked...but there is available plenty of brochures to help out even the most novice of traveler. The bus system was second to none and all the drivers we encountered were very helpful and would let us know when our stop was approaching...they all told us to have a wonderful day.
The rest of the wait staff was excellent and you honestly can't go wrong at this hotel.
The prior complaints seemed a bit out of line. Remember, this is not the U.S., sometimes you have to go with the flow a bit and chill out a bit!!!!

Cheers!!
