“Wonderful Experience...Loved it!”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

We just returned from a week-long stay at the Grotto Bay and it was fabulous!
My husband and I travelled with our two sons, ages 12 and 9 and we all truly enjoyed all that Bermuda offers both at the Grotto Bay and outside as well.
Our room was located on the second floor...balcony facing the ocean and bridge that links the road with the airport.
It was clean and quite spacious for a family of four. The only complaint is that the mattresses could use replacing...very much used and very bumpy. The a/c worked perfectly and sometimes was actually too cold! The bathroom had been renovated and it seems that all the rooms will be fully renovated as time goes on.
The property was very easy to manage and our location (Somerset) was ideal. We weren't too far from anything and didn't have many stairs to climb at any one time.
The food was truly excellent and we took advantage of the all-inclusive option which was great considering the full breakfast buffet would have cost $72 a day for the four of us. The wait staff was very friendly and once you are there a day or so, they certainly remembered you and would ask how everything was and what you had planned for the day.
The beach, although deceptively small, was wonderful. Very calm and clear and there was always enough room to spread out and plenty of chairs and umbrellas are available.
The cove where you can feed the numerous fish (!) was great for snorkeling and our kids loved feeding them daily.
We went out on kayaks (included with the ai option) which was great because the bay the hotel is on is totally protected with no waves to worry about.
There is also a "boatwreck" about 75 yards off the shore which is also great for snorkeling.
The caves on site were great because you can swim in them which is something you wouldn't be able to do anywhere in the States. The water although cold at first is so refreshing and we
thoroughly enjoyed having them on site. No need to go to Crystal Caves and pay...Grotto Bay has it all!!
We also enjoyed St. George's, Hamilton, The Dockyard, Devil's Hole (great for kids where they get to "fish" with hookless lines and "catch" sea turtles and nurse sharks), the Aquarium, and excellent reef fishing courtesy of the Ellen B...very HIGHLY recommended!!!! We also went to Horseshoe Bay beach which had some great waves and we could body surf all afternoon.
All in all, a wonderful trip to Bermuda...sorry we didn't visit sooner.

The Grotto Bay is the perfect site for families...plenty to do and quite comfortable without being too big.
The bartenders were not the nicest...they could use some additional training about customer satisfaction. Also, some of the guest services personnel were not as knowledgeable as we would have liked...but there is available plenty of brochures to help out even the most novice of traveler. The bus system was second to none and all the drivers we encountered were very helpful and would let us know when our stop was approaching...they all told us to have a wonderful day.
The rest of the wait staff was excellent and you honestly can't go wrong at this hotel.

The prior complaints seemed a bit out of line. Remember, this is not the U.S., sometimes you have to go with the flow a bit and chill out a bit!!!!

Anyone that wants to email...feel free at georgemj@comcast.net.

Cheers!!

“A very disappointed Guest”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

Jul 23, 2008
3/6 found this review helpful

I have never written a review on line before about anything, so you will all have to excuse me if I jump all over the place. What prompted me to even get on here and do this is having just returned from my sisters wedding in Bermuda, I expected to be spending all our time discussing how beautiful she looked and what an amazing time we had and instead we are all swapping horror stories.

From the very beginning this trip had problems - we encountered rude people at the front desk from the basic question of "are our rooms all together" which with a party of 30 who have all booked months in advance for an event, you would think this would be no problem - it apparently was and our rooms were spread throughout the resort. 6 people in our group had to be moved out of their rooms b/c the rooms were disgusting, moldy and had no lighting. I personally did not have AC in my room for two days and being asthmatic, this caused a big problem for me. The first night they sent a "security guard" to fix my AC and by the second night they decided to move me, after again speaking to a nasty person at the front desk, and when i got to my new room I found the sheets to be dirty and not changed from the previous guest that had stayed in the room. Neat less to say, i returned to my 88 degree humid room to spend the night. The final night my AC was fixed and consequently, my mothers room which was adjoining to mine then had no AC. Many of the guests that traveled with us had to deal with an overwhelming smell of sulfur in there rooms and my aunt and uncle had no working phone.

Being all inclusive should come with a disclaimer that reads "you will not receive the same treatment as the rest of the paying guests". No matter if we were at the pool restaurant, in the main dining room or just trying to get a drink at the bar we were treated terribly, not given any attention and needed to deal with an attitude upon every request we made. Mind you, 30 people traveled here for this event - 4 nights at approximately $1500/person and gratuity included and we were treated like we snuck in the back door!

My sisters wedding - 2 trips to Bermuda prior to the big event and countless hours on the the telephone to square away every precious detail of her event for the most special day of her life and again he had nothing but disappointment and problems. As it seems, they promise you the moon just to get you there and then what happens happens. Any of you contemplating having an event in the cave on grounds of the resort -Dont! The staff that worked the event were inept and unprofessional - they at times were no where to be found, they cut in front of guests to eat our food and allowed uninvited people to enter the cave during our event. Again, remember we made 2 special trips to Bermuda to plan this wedding and my sister specifically requested decorations in the cave - not only did they not comply with her requests (that she paid for) but made up lies as to why her requests were not honored! The conditions in the cave were deplorable and all of our dresses and the guests clothing were ruined. Not to mention that the water and whatever else that dripped off the ceiling, dripped in our food and caused some of our guests to have upset stomachs.

As if there could be something worse then my sisters wedding day being less than perfect, my cousin returned to her room to find money missing from her bag. A hard lesson a kid has to learn, that you cannot trust the staff in any establishment, especially this one. Once again we encountered the rude people at the front desk, that did nothing but intentionally drag their feet and twist the story so that no resolution was reached by the time we departed.

I would like to specify that not ever single person at the establishment was rude - we had several pleasant people that were very lovely and very accommodating. Unfortunately the bad out weighed the good.

I will end with this - the only attractive thing about this establishment was the wonderful blue water and the warm sunshine - two things the employees/management of this establishment have nothing to do with. Bermuda is a beautiful Island and I will return to it, but never again will I stay at this establishment nor would I ever recommend it anyone!

“First trip to Bermuda; mixed experience”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

Jul 22, 2008
1/5 found this review helpful

This was our first trip to Bermuda to attend a Destination wedding, where family and friends stayed at the Grotto Bay Resort. I had been told that Bermuda is gorgeous, which it was, and that the people are so friendly, where overall that was not the case. We arrived in a group of 10 family members and right from the start at the Airport, the folks were not very friendly. Check-in at the Hotel went well and we were in a deluxe oceanfront room on the second floor. The room was well appointed, however, the dressers needed to be updated as I felt the drawers would fall out, so I moved my clothes to the armouir under the TV. More space to store toiletries is required in the bathroom unless you want your things to fall into the toilet! The room was clean, well attended, but we did get an occasional sulfer smell and the A/C didn't seem to hold to the set temperature.

I'd say we were the lucky ones, as others in our group experienced many A/C outages and others arriving in our group a day later, were put in un-renovated rooms that were substandard and really disgusting. Unless they complained, they weren't offered better rooms and when the host of our group found this out, these folks were moved to better accommodations.

As in another review I read, the staff needs training on providing customer satisfaction. We did take the all inclusive package, where 17% gratuity is included within the rate, but unless you leave yet another tip, the bar staff overall were rude. I felt like I was ignored, left standing for long periods of time before I was waited on and for what? A diet coke? I could sense that others were treated very well, where some in our group felt the same way as me. The dining staff was attentive and breakfast servers were among the best of the staff. They were friendly, held conversations and offered assistance whenever possible.

One thing to note was that I found throughout my stay, I had to ask for a second cup of coffee as it wasn't offered. After breakfast, you couldn't find coffee available and as a coffee drinker, I was extremely disappointed. I would suggest that the coffee bar set up for continental breakfast, be set up all day long and make coffee available at the bar areas, particularly at the Pool area. Yes, you do have a coffee maker in your room, but if you like creamer in your coffee, the powdered variety they offer is as hard as rocks, probably due to the way the packets are stored given the high humidity.

Even at dinner, when finishing the entrees, cups were not placed out for coffee, where you had to ask for it. On the lunch menu, there are homemade ice cream sandwiches offered, but during our stay, they were not available and members of our group asked for them each day. If not available, take it off the menu. Also, during dinner buffets, it would be nice to know what you are eating, as items were not labeled nor were there enough staff at the buffet tables to assist you. Breakfast was by far the best meal. Our group wasn't impressed overall with the dinner selections, where many had to send back what they had ordered. Don't move a table, either, to be with members of the group, as you are frowned upon! On one evening, our host had made prior arrangements for a particular dining room and asked for the table(s) to be arranged a certain way. When we arrived, it was not the way she had wanted it, and she had quite a hard time getting what she'd asked for - and the dining room was virtually empty.

My observation was that the host of our group had gone out of her way to have things pre-arranged and even made a trip to the Hotel a few months before the wedding to go over details. It seems she was promised the "moon" but when we arrived, it was quite different than what was arranged. I had expected better service given the size of our group, but really anyone paying the rates to stay at this Hotel, should be treated with better service.

Keep your valuables in the safe provided, though I prefer the combination safes instead of a key. We did have a member of our group report cash missing which was left in a zippered pocket of a pocketbook. That turned out to be a fiasco on the procedures which were to be taken and then and we ran out of time, as we were leaving to correctly attend to this matter. Seems the "story" kept being communicated incorrectly between members of the hotel staff, where we were left scratching our heads and made to feel like we were the ones misstating the details, which was not the case.

Overall, I'd say for the rates you pay, the Hotel could have been much better and most of what I was disappointed about would require a nominal amount of money to make the improvements. The way guests are treated is a big one, where all of the staff need to undergo "courtesy" training.

I do not believe I would recommend this Hotel, nor do I think I would stay here again. If I were to return to Bermuda, it would most likely be on a cruise ship.

“Absolutely Horrible”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

Jul 21, 2008
2/5 found this review helpful

Where to start. Well before traveling to Bermuda, my mother and I heard the most wonderful things about the location. How the people were the most friendly people that you could meet, there's not one rude person, and what not. Apparently all of the rude citezens of Bermuda chose to work at this establishment. No one seemed in any way excited to do their job, and I felt as if they were easily annoyed by the party that I was with. All we had to do was move a table and the staff gave us nasty looks and/or had a remark to say about it. My cousin was having her wedding reception in one of the caves at the resort, and at one point the staff was in no way helping, and at one point there was no one there to help at all, followed by the staff eating our food. Needless to say we were all on the All-Inclusive plan and whenever we mentioned that to their staff that's when the service became a little bit worse, because they knew that they weren't going to be tipped, even though the gratuties are already included. But the rudeness was the least of my problems with this resort. I had my purse in my room sitting on the dresser. Enclosed in that purse was $120. When I came back to my room one day, all that was left in that purse was $51. I was told that I should've put my money in the safe, which now looking back on the experience I obviously should have. But in reply to this I said, "So you are telling me that you have people on your staff that you do not trust with money laying around in my room? I should be able to leave $100 laying on the table and come back to see it all staring me right back in the face". When I reported it to the front desk, I got nothing but attitude and the woman that was "helping" me was not of any service at all. I found out that the money was taken the night before I was leaving, so of course they holded it off until I had to leave for my flight. Unfortunately I found the staff of this hotel to be a disgrace, and I do not suggest any of you stay in it.

“We love this place!”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

Jul 21, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

We stayed at Grotto Bay July 15th to the 18th. We were supposed to arrive a day earlier but because of Hurricane Bertha our flight was cancelled. I immediately called Grotto Bay directly and they were happy to change our dates of arrival and departure.
The woman we spoke to was very professional and we had no problem changing dates, without further costs to us.
We love staying at Grotto Bay. It is less than 2 hrs. from NYC with a 3 minute cab ride, it has a small but private beach on a bay with calming waters, there is a bus right on the road outside the main house that takes you to St. Georges or Hamilton and the food is very good at all of the restaurants.

This is our second time staying at Grotto Bay. We look forward to going back next summer for 3 nights (just enough time) just to relax from our hectic jobs. It is a great place to relax and do nothing if you prefer to do that.
