I can’t say enough amazing things about our experience at Jake’s. The hotel is quirky and charming and unlike any place you will ever visit. The staff – everyone in Treasure Beach, for that matter – is incredibly warm and welcoming. We were instantly made to feel like family and a part of the authentic culture of the community.
As a wonderful surprise, my fiancee proposed to me during our trip to Jake’s and the staff went above and beyond in assisting him with the set-up and decoration, transforming our deck into a wonderland of flowers, champagne and shells. They even set up a private table overlooking the water so we could celebrate our engagement alone with our own waitress, lobster dinner, etc. Divine! The hugs and congratulations we received the next day really speaks to the kindness of the people at Jake’s.
We stayed in Cockles Down and, in our opinion, it’s the best room for the money at the hotel. Being on the end of the property (right near the new spa), Cockles afforded us the outmost in privacy (more privacy that even the honeymoon suites that are right next to each other) and while the room is billed as “oceanview,” it’s really ocean front with our deck jutting out over the rocks. We woke up every morning, flung open the doors and the water was right there. The room also has air conditioning which is a nice little extra. As far as the reported mosquitoes are concerned, perhaps we got lucky but we didn’t consider the place to be particularly buggy. Jake’s provides you with candles and anti-bug lights, although we didn’t even find much need for their use.
The food at Jake’s and Jack Sprat’s is awesome. Considering you’re somewhat of a captive audience, the food is way better than it even needs to be. Enjoy some of Doogie’s rum punches – they’re more like a delicious smoothie and you’ll find yourself ordering one after the other! The prices are reasonable, too.
Activity-wise, get out and explore the area. We did it all and loved every minute. The boat ride out to Pelican Bar is a MUST; we had so much fun at YS Falls and the Appleton Rum Factory and we even made our way to Lover’s Leap one night followed by dinner at Little Ochie (delightfully delicious!) Every driver and boat operator we used was friendly and informative – we had a great time getting to know so many of the different folks affiliated with Jake’s. I also enjoyed one of Shirley’s legendary massages – it was such a unique and authentic healing experience…another MUST.
Jason and his wife Laura (with their adorable baby daughter!)were there lots during our stay and we had a great time getting to know them, having the chance to sit down with them and talk the afternoon away.
One last thing – make sure to ask your driver en route to and from the airport to stop along the way to an authentic jerk shack for some food. Both meals were a great way to both begin and end our trip.
If you’re planning on making your way to Jake’s, I’m so jealous! It’s a fabulous little piece of heaven, which has spoiled us into expecting the same level of warmth, service, charm and authenticity for all other vacations. Enjoy!
