“Should be more stars!”

Hyatt Place Memphis Primacy Parkway

5 of 5 stars
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Jul 2, 2008

We got an amazing value of $69 through Hotwire. We were initially disappointed by how far the hotel is from downtown, but decided it was worth it (we even added a drive by of Graceland as it was convenient even though we didn't want to tour it).

The rooms are very comfortable with a large sitting area and huge screen plasma tv. Our kids were so mesmerized they passed on pool time. The beds and amenities are typical high end Hyatt comfort.

The only downsides were the location of the bathroom sink (you couldn't turn on the light without it shining right on the beds) and the 75 cent charge that's quietly mentioned on the room card holder for the morning paper unless you call and cancel. We did cancel, but received the paper anyway for no charge. I noticed a lot of other higher end hotels on our trip had this same charge, but was always crossed off. Hopefully this hotel will do the same--it seems very petty.

The free breakfast was fine.

“Modern design makes smaller rooms very liveable.”

This Hyatt Place is apparently one of the Amerisuites that has been modernized by a really talented interior architect. The place is stunning in muted colors of greens, oranges and browns, appointments, shapes and lighting that form wonderful effects.

We found the surroundings very modern, and well thought out visually, but some of the little details of the implementation weren't clearly under the control of the architect, somewhat spoiling his excellent visual work.

In the "suite" (a term that bothers me when there's no door separating the living and sleeping areas), the large HDTV can pivot to face the living or sleeping areas, but provides no privacy to one or the other. Both areas are lighted and both areas receive the sound when this is on, providing no privacy to a sleeping partner, for example.

The window air unit makes far to much noise to hear the television clearly from the bedroom area, and would likely keep some people up at night. There's no low-volume mode for the AC unit. It's either suffer no air movement, or listen to a rumble that drowns out the freight trains across the street.

There was a loud harmonic resonance in the tiny bathroom when the only light/exhaust fan was running.

There is a wet bar area with refrigerator for chilling, but no microwave for heating. Forget having popcorn in front of that wonderful, large HDTV. Huh?

The Schneider elevators, two of them, were very slow and clunky for being newer lifts. One had been marked Out of Order one day, though I believe that might have been triggered by people who were impatient with these klunky machines. Developers: don't install cheap elevators in a motel. You have six floors of people who require elevators for their luggage all day and night. It's too big of a risk to use cheap, slow, klunky elevators like these.

We found the breakfast area and the tables around it were not bussed regularly on the first morning we were there, leading to dirty tables and food crumbs everywhere. The melons of two varieties tasted very stale. A hot breakfast was for sale, but I wasn't going to trust people who'd leave the area such a mess with preparing my hot breakfast. The second day it was a bit better looking. This is all about hiring attendants who recognize these problems and deal with them. Apparently this hotel has a shortage of those.

The location is a good 20-25 minute drive to downtown, but it appears to be in a SAFE area of Memphis, which is a real roll of the dice for those of you who know the city. There are nice restaurants within a very short drive or perhaps a walk: P.F. Changs, Ruth's Chris Steak House, etc. It is in a more upscale/business park part of the metro near I-240 at its Easternmost edge.

This hotel was located in an easy to find area in the middle of Memphis. Downtown in one direction, lots of shopping and the Wolfchase mall in the other direction- just a few minutes from either. The area was near many great restuarants. We chose to try Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for our anniversary. Other greats, like Macaroni Grill and PF Chang's were just a block or two away.
The Hyatt was sleek and contemporary. It was very clean and well kept. The front desk was extremely friendly. We didn't encounter any problems whatsoever. We went out for the afternoon and returned to a clean, made up room. I wish that would happen at home!
The room we enjoyed was very large and had a sitting area with a big couch and desk. There were hook ups for any electronic device you could imagine. The room was equipped with a 42 inch LG flat screen TV. It was fantastic to lay in bed and watch TV, especially uninterrupted by our children who we left at the in-laws!
The ONLY thing that could have made this room any better was a bathtub with jets. This is now definately my favorite hotel in Memphis, and we've stayed in every high end hotel in the city at one time or another (Peabody, Raddison, Holiday Inn Select Downtown Memphis, etc). I will definately be back to the Hyatt Place!

“Usual Hyatt Place (slight below Average)”

I am not sure how this hotel ended up being the #1 ranked on tripadvisor.

It does offer the usuall HyattPlace convenience (Free Parking, Close to Pkwy, Close to Wild Oats Supermarket, Clean Rooms). However, the amenities (light switches, bathroom) feel a little older than other Hyatt Places I've stayed at.

Staff was really friendly, and check in/out went quickly. During my 2 nigth stay (Sat-Mon), the hotel was very crowded with large groups of youngsters (possibly Basketball team, Swimming team...) which were really loud in th halways and lobby.

E#ither way, this is a slightly below average Hyatt Place and does not derserve to b ranked #1. After staying a few days in Memphis, my opinion is that the Westin by the FedEx forum is the best tourist location.
