Longwood Gardens is located in Kennett Square, PA and fairly close to Delaware. I went to Longwood Gardens as a kid on a field trip the 1st time I went. It was beautiful. The gardens were well maintained and I remember them being HUGE. I really liked it and made it a point to go back as an adult. So far I have been back twice.
As and adult, I went once in the summer to enjoy the greenery..they sculpt their shrubs into shapes and cut them in ways to make walkways and such. They have a beautiful gazebo set near water and a stone tower on site as well. I even saw a cross for what appeared to be an Indian Grave. There are many educational signs describing the plants throughout the gardens. It is a lot of walking and it can get hot out in the sun. I dont recall there being too many shady spots. Longwood Gardens just seems so massive to me, even as an adult. Most of the walking in on level ground and on paved walkways, but there is just so much to see. The gardens are nicely laid out and very well maintained. If you love gardening and nature, you will love Longwood.
Most people probably wouldnt think of visiting a garden in the wintertime, but I really enjoy Longwood at Christmas time. In fact, I prefer to go to Longwood Gardens in the wintertime around Christmas. I love the gardens with a fresh coat of snow and the twinkling lights. It is beautiful. They often sculpt some greenery into reindeer and put red bows on them. You wont have many flowers and stuff to look at outside during this season, but you can still view the gazebo and tower outdoors during the winter season. The main attraction during the winter months are the greenhouses. They are decorated and look spectacular. They decorate trees and have poinsettias everywhere. It really is pretty. They make bunnies and other critters out of grapevine and tuck them in the decorated trees. They also make animals out of clay pots and tuck them in between the poinsettias. It is a nice way to kick off the holiday season and get into the holiday spirit...without all the hustle and bustle of the malls.
No matter the season you visit Longwood Gardens, you are sure to enjoy your visit. In the summer and spring you will be able to enjoy the greenery and flowers. In the fall you can enjoy the crisp cool air and the changing colors of the leaves. And in the winter months you can enjoy the festive deocor, wreaths and trees throughout the gardens and greenhouses. I highly recommend at least one visit to Longwood Gardens. It is beautiful. I think couples, families and seniors will enjoy this attraction. Just remember that it can be a lot of walking.
Note: Longwood Gardens does have an onsite cafe (ive never eaten there) should you get hungry while visiting the gardens.
