“A beautiful Chicago sunset”

John Hancock Center / Observatory

This was my second trip to the observatory but my family's first. My plan was to get there just before dusk so they could see the view during the day and then watch the lights come on in the city. What a spectacular sunset! But oh-so-fast! Once the sun started to dip, it just raced away!

Yes, the windows could do with a wash, and the Skydeck is enclosed with heavy mesh. But, really, do you expect Chicago's tallest building to have a truly open observation area? Wouldn't that be a mite dangerous? And maybe the Hancock Observatory doesn't compare with the Empire State Building. But then again, it's not in New York, it's in Chicago. And for Chicago...the view is magnificent.

Do invest in a CityPass if you plan on seeing more of the sights. It makes the cost of all much more managable.

“Better view than Sears tower!”

This was the first thing we did in Chicago and it was a wise choice! Very good views of the city and of the lake. It has a better view than the Sears tower as you can look at the Loop skyscrapers from a distance, rather than being amongst them. The audio tour is worth it as it expands on the written info on the visible landmarks and construction details.

The only disappointing thing was the supposed "open air viewing deck". It is not truly "open air", there is a thick mesh grill... yes you can hear the city but you cannot take photos through it.

“Great Views”

Tremendous views (four states on a clear day; an unbeatable skyline) from the bar and restaurant on the 95th/96th floors. IMO, the skeydeck is somewhat over-priced, but definitely purchase the "City Pass", which will cut down on the per-venue cost significantly.

“Bar OK”

John Hancock Center / Observatory

The bar at the top of John Hancock building is an OK place to drink $8 dollar beers. The view at night is not that impressive, but then again everything in Chicago is not that impressive. It's worth a quick stop for a couple of beers just to say that you saw it, but it's nothing memorable.

“Relaxing”

On a flying visit to Chicago one weekend last August, we (the group) were rushed off to the JHC tower for cocktails. Being that we were all v.tired from our travels (overnight in Manchester before leaving the UK) - we were less than enthusiastic ... which changed the moment we reach the observation deck. Yes it's no Empire State but we weary travellers sat back whilst the waitress brought our cocktails and watched the sun set over the beautiful city and shimmering lake. A beautiful end to a loooong day.
