“Acceptable Condo Resort”

I booked a room with this condo and was quite hesitant based on some of the posts on the reviews located here. I have to say that I was happy with the accommodations. The price was fair for the resort based in Key West and the conditions were acceptable.

We scheduled time which was during peak season so the resort was around $400 a night. For Key Wes that is an average price for this time of year however this was a condo with 2 bedrooms and 2 bath rooms.

The location is nice and relatively quite. The resort is located near the airport, however the island is only around 10 miles in size so you really can’t get away from the airport. The Resort is not located on a through street and is closer to the residential side of the island which adds to the quiet atmosphere. The location is only minutes from Smathers Beach via car or about a 15 minute walk. You will need a taxi or car to get to the old town area where most of the tourist activities are.

There were some reviews that indicated that the resort was not well maintained and the staff was not very accommodating. The unit we stayed in was clean and maintained well. The pool and hot tub area was also clean and well maintained. We’ve stayed in other condos at other locations and in comparison this was much nicer.

Most of the negative reviews sound like they are people who don’t travel much and or have never been to the keys. This is not a luxury hotel and since it’s a condo type unit you will not receive that sort of service. If you are looking for a luxury stay you may want to consider another hotel although even the luxury hotels on Key West do not compare to the standards of that on the mainland.

“Don't waste your money!”

Cheked into Sunrise located directly next to the airport and when assigned the room I asked if this room had a nice view. She assured me it was great - it faced a line of bushes and a road. The screen fell off the door when I went out on the porch, two drawers were missing in the kitchen, the blender was broken and unusable. The whole place smelled awful. It was dirty. I immediatly went over and requested a new condo. I asked if I was in for more of the same and her reply "no, it's only that unit" Why, I thought would she put ANYONE in a unit like that? While I was in the office, two more families came over to complain about the conditions. I honestly don't know how anyone could give this place a decent review. People spend their hard-earned money with limited time for vacation and end up staying in dumps with managers who could really care less about the condition of their property. We checked out two days later and found room at the Southern Most Hotel - now that was wonderful!!

“Key West was the Best”

Sunrise Suites Resort

5 of 5 stars
Rochester

The Sunrise Suites Resort was great. We had six people in the group, there were two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen with bar counter. nice big den fully furnished and balcony. The suites were right by the air port and not hard to find. All though, on one side of the island, it's completely flat and biking to down town to Duval St. only took 10 - 20 minutes, 5 - 10 by taxi, no big deal. The grounds of the Sunrise Suites were very well kept. What can I say, it was great.

“Excellent stay! Worth the money”

Though a little hard to find amid all the hotels in the seaside drive, it is probably as good as any other property. Whole of keywest is sort of friendly and laid back, and I felt the same about this hotel too. If you want a fancy place, go stay in Hyatt.
Our unit had 2 bed rooms and a sofa that turns into a bed. The beds in the rooms were comfortable, whereas the bed in sofa is horrible. The property has a nice swimming pool, rusty gym and laundry. It is definitely not facing the ocean. From our room we could clearly see the runway of the airport. But this being keywest, there are rarely any big jets landing and hence very less noise. And a total silence in the night. The kitchen was good and well furnished. The microwave stopped working after a couple days and was not replaced.

I definitely dont mind staying there again.

“Not As Bad As We Feared”

Sunrise Suites Resort

3 of 5 stars
Orange Park, Florida

We made a late decision to spend a week-end in Key West and our favorite hotels were booked. We found vacancies at the Sunrise Suites, but the reviews gave us serious misgivings. We arrived expecting the worst. Perhaps our expectations were so low, that we were delighted to find it not so bad as we expected.

We had a good sized room on the fourth floor with a balcony facing east. We could not see the water, but we were absolutely on the "sunrise side". There was no charge for parking, but if the property had been full this would have been a problem. There are simply not enough parking spaces for the number of suites available. I guess if you could not find a parking space you could park at the office and walk the one and one-half blocks back to the condo unit.

Our suite was semi-tastefully decorated and the distressed furniture was a perfect choice - impossible to tell if the furniture was damaged by careless guests or came that way from the factory. The linens were certainly not of high quality, but were clean. We had two bedrooms with two bathrooms, and a living room with a kitchen area on one end. The couch in the living room converted into a bed. It would have been very uncomfortable as the mattress was about 1/2' thick, but if you brought an air mattress a third couple could stay in the unit. There was a TV in the living room and one in each bedroom. They were not the latest technology and the bedroom TV was about 12', but it was a TV. The cable offerings were good.

We did not accept maid service when we registered, but ended up paying for it anyway because we did accept fresh towels when they were delivered to our room. If you want to avoid that extra $10 charge be sure to refuse the towels, or else let them come in a change the sheets and make the bed.

The room was on the clean side. This is not to say it was clean. The tile floor was filthy and walking on it in bare feet left the souls of our feet black. There was dirt in the corners and crevaces where careless housekeepers had pushed it rather than remove it. The toiletries were a strange brand, and not particularly good. The toilet worked about every third flush, and there was a terrible odor from the garbage disposal.

The water heater vented into the kitchen/living room combination and it took the A/C about 8 hours to bring that room below 76 degrees. Once we achieved a livable temperature we had no difficulty maintaining it.

Would we return? It certainly is not in the same category as the Doubletree or the Inn at Key West, our preferred properties. In a pinch, however, it is a doable property. If, like us, you expect the worst you may be surprised. I think these units are individually owned, and it depends upon the responsibility of each owner to maintain his unit. We got one that was fairly well maintained.
