It's worth prefacing our review by mentioning that this hotel was not our first choice, or even our second or third. We booked our honeymoon at the last minute, and this was the best we could get in the area we wanted.

We stayed in the hotel for 8 days late March/ early April, and we stayed in a suite - i.e. a larger, supposedly better room than the standard rooms.

The location is great, and the hotel smelled like a Hello Kitty eraser which I liked, and the water pressure in the shower was good, but that's about it for the pros.

Despite being a brand new hotel, it was run down:

- the walls outside the bathroom were moldy

- the carpet was coming up at the edges

- the bathroom mirror was rusty

- the bathroom itself only had a small window for ventilation

- the bath leaked, so the floor was always wet

- the balcony sliding door didn't lock shut, so our room could have easily been broken into.

Despite being an international hotel chain, the service was rude, the staff was disorganized and attention to detail was abysmal:

- the room, although large, was very dark

- there were no extra sockets, which meant we had to unplug the main lamp just to use our laptop

- a huge mirror on the wall would have provided ample reflection, but the glass was a dark brown, so you couldn't really check your appearance in it. Instead we had to use the full-length mirror in the bathroom, which, after a shower, was quite steamy

- the wireless internet connection was temperamental, and for the first few days we could only log on at night - we concluded that the bandwidth for this hotel was insufficient

- room service was slow - by the time our coffees arrived they were lukewarm...

- ...and it also took 2 phone calls to the front desk and three days before anyone came to take away our empty dishes, with dehydrated, rotting food scraps. Disgusting. I'm surprised I never saw mice, as ours was clearly not the only room whose trays were not being cleared

- Argentina's economy means that it is very hard to break a bill over 20 pesos 9about USD $8), so typically tourists rely on a hotel to break a large bill, as the alternative is to go to a bank, where you will queue up for 2 hours (no exaggeration!). This hotel, on the other hand, refused to help. It was only when I demanded to speak to the manager that they were able to accommodate my request. I understand that things work a little differently over there, but guess what? This is supposedly an international hotel, frequented by international travelers who do not want to spend their vacation lining up for hours on end at a bank just to break a 100 pesos bill, therefore make sure you can provide this simple service if you want people to return to your hotel!

- We were told and had reconfirmed TWICE that our taxi to the airport was already paid for on our hotel bill. Surprise, surprise, when we get to the airport the driver says he hasn't been paid. Of course, we'd used up all our pesos, and we ended up nearly missing our flight because we couldn't find an ATM at the airport. The hotel, when we called them to ask what the heck was going on, was less than sympathetic and didn't apologise for the mistake.

I'm sorry, but for $150 a night in Argentina I expect a LOT better.

“Esplendor Boutique Hotel needs some polish.”

Esplendor Palermo

Apr 7, 2008

The hotel is okay but is just missing the finishing touch. From not have anything to put your luggage up on. To no tissues in the bathroom. To the mirror in the bathroom rusting on the bottom. The hotel is fairly new in a great area but you see the the signs allready of it getting a little worn down. My sink handles were to small for the sink so they looked weird. My little draw to a sorta of desk would get stuck when tried to open since it was not built correct. My Airconditioner had a slow drip. It did not bother me but the hotel is fairly new so this should of not been happening. The staff were very friendly but they should have more little pamphelets of things to do in BA like the other boutique hotels I have stayed at in the past. I think the owners picked a decent location for a boutique hotel they just were a little too cheap on the design and materials of the hotel. Free breakfast but it ends at 10 AM, breakfast should be served until 11Am like other hotels in BA since you naturally stay out late since nothing gets started before 10PM so you will most likely miss breakfast.

“Great for the Price”

Esplendor Palermo

Feb 27, 2008

I stayed at the Esplendor Palermo for three nights in February and had an overall pleasant experience. The hotel is well situated in the Palermo barrio of BA, which is hip and populated largely by locals. At first, the hotels immediate surroundings doesn't look like much, but it is only a few blocks from the center of hipness along Honduras.

The room was decent size, clean and modern looking, with a flat TV and a very small balcony. Air conditioning was controlled via a cool remote and it worked extremely well (since it was summer in BA). The room didn't have an alarm clock and just a very simple one-line phone. The wireless Internet didn't work well, but there is one Mac with Internet in the lobby.

The bathroom was more form than function. Some things just didn't make much sense, but then, it's not a business hotel. A bit stingy on the towels. The sink was in the living area, which is great if you have two people traveling.

The included breakfast was fine, but nothing special. Mainly things like pre-fab muffins and cakes and fruits, but enough to get the day started.

The hotel also has a nice little roof deck with a few decent chairs. And a cool waterfall.

Staff was friendly and spoke English well (which can be rare in BA). We arrive early on an overnight flight and we were given a room well before the regular check-in time.

Overall, it's a nice hotel in a cool area, especially for the price of $123 a night. I broke up my week stay by also staying more centrally in downtown, which I would recommend to anyone. Radio cabs are safe and cheap, usually not more that 3 or 4 US Dollars for most rides.

Overall, very enjoyable stay. And you have to try Don Julio's for amazing steaks just a few blocks from the hotel. Great food in a cool restaurant full of locals. Order Lomo, which is their tenderloin (about $10 US).

“Great transfer hotel”

Esplendor Palermo

4 of 5 stars
New York City, New York
Feb 24, 2008

My love and I stayed at the Esplendor Palermo in early February between flying into the international airport one morning and out of the domestic the next day. I was able to nab a better rate from somewhere online and spent around 30% less than advertised... perhaps that's why I found the hotel a nice surprise. Great check in, lovely staff, enjoyed our room (although I can agree that the bathrooms are a bit odd), free computer use in the lobby and I must admit the roof-deck is a real gem. I wouldn't want to stay here for a week but for a night or two I was very happy with the experience and would do it again.

“Great decor but was missing that finishing touch”

Esplendor Palermo

We stayed at the Esplendor Palermo because it was a new hotel that just open in October. We figured everything would be to par. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel more like a 3 star. The decor is lovely and staff is great and their cafe con leche is pretty good. However, the bathroom didn't look finished and the tub flooded a little bit. The rug in the room felt a bit damp, I belive this is due to poor ventilation. Also, I found little nats in the bathroom one day and I think it is do to that. The hotel is a bit over price do to the unfinished touches in the room.
