I stayed at this hotel with my mother in the Fall of 2006. I was studying abroad in Argentina at the time and happened to live in the neighborhood, so this was close to my homestay. I had no idea how much we would love the hotel! It's a little on the small side, but it was a perfect fit for us. The bathrooms had a spa-like atmosphere to them. And the rooms were nicely appointed. We stayed for a week and were able to converse with the owner numerous times. He told us about the history of the hotel, that it used to be his grandmother's (or another relative's) house before converting it. The staff was nothing but attentive and pleasant.
Also, the area is fantastic. Notwithstanding the fact that I'm a little biased from having lived in the neighborhood, I can honestly say that the hotel is in a great area for restaurants and nightlife. In a two block radius there are more than 10 or 15 restaurants/bars that are fantastic. We ate at one of the restaurants three times that week. Although the "more" historic/touristy areas are a taxi ride away (it doesn't cost more then $10 to get there and if you're adventurous the bus system can get you *anywhere*), the area is so pleasantly Argentine that I can't imagine needing to leave. Strolling the streets of this neighborhood, or taking in a polo game in the nearby pitch, are fantastic ways to experience Buenos Aires. Much more than being taken in by some of the tourist traps in San Telmo.
I can't recommend this hotel more. It really made my mother's and my stay truly incredible and unforgettable.
