Stayed here for eight nights during the second week of October 2007. The property is undergoing major remodeling. My room had completed remodeling. It was a 1-bedroom unit with separate bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining areas. Very spacious and furnished tastefully and comfortably. The living room featured a 42 inch flat panel TV. After a few nights I was quite happy here. But as the duration of my stay went on, the inconveniences associated with the remodeling became more irritating. They are drilling, hammering, blasting and chipping away at stuff all day long. There was not a noise issue, it stayed quiet at night, but the debris and the particles in the air gave me a respiratory infection that I am still recovering from. All sorts of strange odors (vinegar small by the elevators) and dusts in the air. The physical symptoms were worse than an allergy attack to me. Also the complimentary breakfast is the same every day. Every morning, 8 mornings in the row it was the same food - except for the days where they ran out of stuff. Breakfast ends at 9am, that means if you show up at 8:50 the surly breakfast staff has already put stuff away. Stale bread and no butter to put on the stale bread to make it palatable. Milk that is not chilled.... I would be curious what the local health inspector would say. Don't even think of asking for decaf coffee, its too much trouble for them. There is plenty of parking outside but the spaces are very narrow, people park across the lines. Expect to get door-dings. There is a shuttle service to the Van Dorn metro station that is supposed to leave every 30 minutes. The one time that I used it the driver was running 20 minutes late (9:30am shuttle left at 9:50am) and we dropped someone off at a store on the way to the Metro. So don't count on it if you are in a hurry. The lobby area was under renovation, it looks like it will be a nice space when it is completed. Another word of caution, do not expect the "Do Not Disturb" sign to keep staff away, housekeeping woke me up one morning at 8am to try to clean the room and another time they came into to repair the kitchen cabinetry while I had the "Do Not Disturb" sign out. My electronic room key kept failing. I had to keep getting it reset. One night the front desk could not reset it and I had to wait for the maintenance engineer to show up on the property. While I was waiting at the front desk during that experience I was able to listen to other guests horrors - one guy checked in to a room only to find that someone else was already staying in there. There is a single computer available for all guests to use, someone is always on it! Several times it was a woman playing on Singles.com who would say "I just got on here, can you come back later?" I guess she was desperate for some nookie. Overall assessment, it is a nice property in the physical sense. Modern building, large room size, good location, wonderful furnishings but the service and maintenance need work. There were plenty of "pardon our dust" signs. I am happy that they are improving the property, but it really seems like guest comfort took a backseat to the needs of staff. 2 days after checking out now I am breathing better and feeling recovered from the bad hotel air (note I am still in Alexandria, just not at the Hawthorn, so it is not an environmental issue). Also I had to wash down my car from all the debris dropped on it from the exterior construction. I think falling debris is illegal, since they were just letting the wind carry it away. I would recommend this place with caution once the renovation is complete.
