My boyfriend and I decided on a drivable local trip with history and culture that neither of us had visited before for the MLK holiday weekend. We happened upon Valley Forge, and after visiting the state tourism sites, settled upon Homewood Suites. I confirmed as I always do, my reservation via phone a few days before and asked the concierge if they had a tourism rack in the hotel lobby. They didn't, but were sure that I could find information easily upon our arrival.
Unfortunately, we took a wrong turn somewhere and got a wee bit lost on the way to the hotel. My boyfriend (as I'm the pedestrian, and although I ride shotgun well and am more than adept with a map he called the hotel) called for directions, and they were unable to provide directions from where we were (turns out we were just one town over). One of the three tiny dings that took away from an Excellent rating that I'd assign this Homewood.
However, once we found the hotel, we were warmly greeted (we had arrived when it began to snow horizontally!) and check in was a breeze. (A small gift upon arrival as I'm a HiltonHonors member was a nice touch). The studio room was impeccable! An absolutely spotless studio awaited us with a full kitchenette stocked with microwave popcorn, coffee and tea (we brought a bottle of wine from home, so that was handy), a desk, sofa and small dining table. The bathroom didn't have a temperature regulator or a heater, so the second tiny ding (I like a warm environment).
As we were starving, we asked the front desk and were provided with good recommendations on where to eat nearby.
GOOD SERVICE GOLD STAR - Remember I asked about tourist-y things in the Valley Forge area when I called prior to arrival? The staff person at the front desk called out my name before we left for dinner, and said "Ms. .... There’s a package for you." I wasn't expecting anything (maybe a bouquet of wildflowers from the bf :)), and voila! She presented me with a manila-sized envelope filled with tourist information, a Valley Forge discount card and guide, and an ever-valuable map of the local area!
Fresh coffee and tea were available off the main lobby (we zoned in front of the fireplace for a few minutes) at all times. Breakfast on Sunday morning consisted of fresh squeezed OJ and other juices, scrambled eggs, hot oatmeal and grits, home fries, French toast, a variety of cold cereals, breads, pastries, fruit salad, and a waffle maker! We ate to our heart's content!
ANOTHER GOLD STAR FOR SERVICE: I asked my boyfriend about the odd noise in the room when we returned from breakfast, which was that the maid had placed our dirty dishes/utensils (yes, the kitchenette is fully stocked) in the dishwasher and turned it on!
On Monday, breakfast was scaled back from Sunday and the hot items were just a few degrees above tepid (in Homewood's defense, we did arrive to breakfast about 15 minutes before they ended). Third but tiny ding. We did manage to stuff our faces anyway.
Overall, an enjoyable and satisfying experience, and we're looking forward to returning to the area (and Homewood) in the spring. Another added bonus, although we are both Latinos, we may appear as an interracial couple. No looks askance. The staff were all helpful, gracious and courteous.
