Just returned from our honeymoon in Sharm. We spent the last three nights in the Hyatt Regency, as we figured it would be nice to end the holiday in a luxury hotel. The other hotel we stayed at was the Melia Sinai, a budget 5 star.

On arrival at the Hyatt it was clear that this was a much classier establishment than the Melia Sinai. In fact, we had a hard time persuading the security guards to let us in (I don't think they are used to having guests arrive in an unmarked taxi from another hotel). We arrived early for check in, and without our passports (long story) but the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful - we had a complimentary drink in the lounge while the passport problem was resolved and then were let into our room before the stated check-in time.

The room was very nice although the only major difference from the cheaper hotel was the bathroom: a separate shower and toilet and posher toiletries! One downside is that we were a long walk from the beach - even using the lift. Our cleaner Ali did a great job everyday: we came back to our room after a day on the beach to find the air conditioning had alrady been turned on and ambient background music playing!

What really set the Hyatt apart from the Melia Sinai was the quality of the food - it is second to none. Lunches at the Beach House bar were a highlight - freshly grilled fish and seafood salads and home made ice cream. We ate at the open-air Souk two nights and had one dinner at Sala Thai. All the meals were excellent but the Thai restaurant was the best. Yes it is pricey. Lunches and dinners added £70 a day to our bill, and we only drank bottled water. Drinks were on average twice the price of the Melia Sinai, and imported alcoholic drinks were exorbitant. Luckily, we didn't want them, but if you do, prepare to pay £50 for a bottle of wine.

The clientele are also a different breed here: far fewer European package tourists, more British, American and indeed Egyptian families.

We spent most of our time on the beach or in the sea. The beach we found to be more crowded than Melia Sinai, but head for the parasols to the left of the jetty for more privacy. One of the main reasons we chose the Hyatt is the reputation of the house reefs. There are three nearby dive sites with good reefs: the Middle Garden is immediately in front of the hotel beach, the Near Garden is down the coast towards Sharm and the Far Garden is in the other direction. A competent snorkeller can easily reach the Near and Far Gardens. The corals are wonderful and we saw a huge variety of sea life including moray eels, spotted eagle rays and a huge Napoleon wrasse. We also did a snorkelling trip to Ras Mohammed but to be honest it wasn't much better!

Overall the Hyatt comes with a definite recommendation. It is a class above the budget 5 star hotel. Be prepared for the expense of food and drink, and you will have a wonderful time.

“What a good 4 star hotel should be (not quite 5 star)”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

4 of 5 stars
Poole, Dorset

I would say that this is a good 4 star hotel but there is definately room for improvement and not what I would say is an excellent 5 star hotel. Went there with my partner. We arrived at the airport and got a taxi to the hotel (tip no.1 - pay no more than 100 EGP (£10) for the taxi we paid 200 EGP (approx £20!) taxi drivers will try it on and ask for more, we went on to discover other couples had been taken to Naama Bay which is further down the road for approx £7.50.

The hotel is approx 10-15 min drive from the airport. The drive to the hotel takes you past hotel resorts strewn accross the coast with dessert and mountains on the other side of the road. Upon arriving at the hotel you go up a very long palm tree lined driveway to the resort entrance which is security guarded and local taxis are not allowed to enter. The hotel provides its own limosine/taxi service which is quite reasonable, although is more expensive than the local taxis, however you get a brand new mercedes or bmw to cheuffeur you around.

The hotel lobby is very nice fresh flowers, marble floors and a glass atrium with a view over the resort and red sea. Our greeting was ok. There was only one girl on reception. She served another copule arriving and then served us whilst answering the phone. Complimentary apple juice was given to us. Once checked in we were taken to our room by a golf buggy. The room was very nice not what I would say was pure luxury. We had a queensize bed, sea vi ew, balcony with sun lunger and table and chairs. Mini bar ok but bit warm, asked to have it fixed and a man came to fix it but made no difference. Bathroom very nice and I would not say it was bad but again not what I would say was wonderful. Nice shower, seprate bath, ok toiletries, bath robe. All in all bedrooms ok, sep seating area.

Hotel itself has several resaurants which are again nice and ok but not what I would say is excellent. The breakfast is very good and tastes good, lots of fruit, crosisants, hot food, omlettes, fried eggs, toast beans, bacon (made from beef). Lunch ok in the beach/pool cafes. Menu stays the same though so does get a bit boring. The evening food and the drink in the hotel is completely overpriced. £1.70 for a can of pepsi, £3.00 for a bottle of beer, £5.00 for a small glass of wine. The Thai restaurant, cascades and the souk are not what I would call worth the price. I have no objection to getting what you pay for but I felt that I was eing ripped off for food and drink in the evening. You know what you are going to get is ok but you cant help feeling that it wanst that great for the money and you could get alot better elsewhere for a lot less. I am vegetarian and felt that that hotel didnt really cater particularly well for that apart from cafe fresco.

Service on the whole is ok. Most are quite friendly, smiley and helpful, however it ranges depending on the individual. Some cant do enough for you, some are miserable and some are easy going and happy. I was snapped at a bit on the last day by a pool attendant when I requested a couple of towels for our last few hours. We had been there a week and checked out at 2.30pm our taxi was at 4.30 so we spent the last couple of hours by the pool. I didnt have my towel card and the towel guy was unessasarily abrupt with me .

Theres not really alot happening at the hotel apart from lounging by the pool/beach, snorkelling, eating, or working out at the gym. The shops are few, very small, overpriced (£11 for InStyle magazine). The entertainment in the hotel is poor. Belly dancing every night in the souk and a couple of hotel cabaret singers in the bar. One of whom thinks shes a world famous celebrity singer and ego is as big as a mountain.

You need a car, bus, taxi to go anywhere outside of the hotel. Naama Bay shopping district is a nightmare and you will be constantly hasseled. However the restaurants there are hit and miss some great value for money and others very poor.

Think sharm still has a way to go with organising its tourism. Its getting there. Early June is a very hot time to go and I would definately recommend going in the winter - spring months more enjoyable.

We went by plane to Cairo for the day which I would very much recommend. The city is huge (23 million peoplelive there) and I would definately recommend a tour guide. Try to book outside of hotel to save alot of money.

All in all hotel is very nice/pleasant. Gardens lovely and well kept. Bit over priced in parts and food/beverages not really worth the money. To improve the hotel I would improve the entertainement. Maybe a disco/nightclub dancefloor for adults to join in. Introduce of a waterpark on site. (There is one 80ft slide there already. A larger gym would be better with morning classes. Modernise the rooms, t.v.s. I would have free wi-fi and complimentary water seeing as though you cant drink the tap water. I would also lower the prices in the beauty spa. £80 for a facial!! £40 for a 25 min massage!!

Hyatt is a good chain and even though I thought hotel was ok I would not be in a hurry to go back. Feel that I have tried it and was even though was very nice, rooms and view and breakfasts very nice, I was not particularly impressed with the evenings there. I did not leave feeling like we had an indulgent 5 star experience or had been pampered. We went on a B&B basis and even though we had hardly even drank my partner had a few bottle of beers each day and evenings, we didnt particularly eat alot (we are not very big people) the check out bill still came to £500 ($1000) . Egypt is not an expensive country however the prices in the hotel are marked up considerably and I feel this spoils it and they could provide a better service if the prices were lowered all round and I feel would get people spending. All in all a good 4 star hotel.

Just returned from a fabulous and very relaxing week at the Hyatt Regency in Sharm al Sheikh. The Hotel and it's wonderful location on the beach can't be faulted in any way. Service was 1st Class and our room was really spacious, clean, comfortable and well equipped.
Our favourite food within the Hotel was at the Sala Thai or The Souk (for steaks). We had booked an upgrade to a Regency Club Room and would definitely do it again. Cocktails and Nibbles from 5.30pm till 7.30pm each night for Club guests in the Exclusive Regency Club Lounge. There were Private Pools and a Private Beach for Club guests too. The Pool Butlers treated us like Royalty bringing us unlimited soft drinks, fresh fruit, cold towels, etc. during the day. The pools and beach at the main hotel were also fabulous and we enjoyed swimming in the lazy river, but we preferred the privacy and the service of the Regency Club Pool & Beach.
The hotel has a dress code, so gents must wear long trousers and collared shirts when dining in the Thai Restaurant, The Souk or for cocktails in The Regency Club Lounge. Shorts and t shirts are fine during the day, but they don't appreciate swimwear once inside the Hotel. We're generally used to a more casual dress code during our holidays, but I must admit that the more formal dress code did make the Hotel feel a lot more exclusive. I just wish that we'd known about it before our trip so that my hubby had brought a bigger selection of long trousers!
The sea is very clear and the tropical fish were only feet from the shore. Within seconds of entering the water we were swimming amongst them. The sea is very salty, but great for floating easily. We hired 2 sets of snorkels, masks and flippers at the hotel's dive centre for around £15 a day.
Food prices were probably what you'd expect at a 5 Star Deluxe Hotel and drink was a little pricey at £8 for a Vodka & Orange. However after two hours of cocktails at The Regency Club we didn't need to buy a lot more.
It's definitely not a Hotel for heavy drinking Party Animals! Probably best suited to couples looking for a quiet romantic break rather than singles or families. We didn't leave the Hotel all week so have no idea what went on outside, but the holiday was planned for total relaxation and that's exactly what we got.
We would love to go back to The Hyatt Regency again some time in the future, and would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a place to visit that's a little bit special.

“Very poor service and not a 5*”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

Jun 6, 2008

This was our second visit to this resort, having stayed at the same time last year. So, why did we go back? The resort is quite good for children (we have a 4 year old) and although not a genuine 5* in our opinion is quite good value for money. It is generally well kept with a few exceptions. The Regency Club pool is in desperate need of having a makeover. Tiles missing, tiles poorly replaced, sun loungers in poor state of repair and sun umbrellars require refurbishment. The staff range from very poor to excellent. Reda the pool butler at the Regency Club is very attentive, many others were not. Most staff at the resort seemed to expect a large tip. The upgrade to Regency Club is worth the extra, although the timings for complimentary drinks in the evening is clearly designed to attract as few people as possible. At 19.30 you have never seen staff move so quickly to remove the 'free' drinks from the area. If only they were as quick to serve at breakfast. The food at the resort is generally very good. Cascades offer an exceptional steak in very nice surroundings. The Thai restaurant is also very good, although the cost of drinks is daylight robbery. Champagne at £350 for a bottle that is £25 in the UK. The food at the Beach Hut again is very good, although the service was awful. The main buffet restaurant is not very good and lacks any atmoshere. The choice seemed to be very limited compared to the previous year. Many people, all our party included had upset tummies. What caused this I dont know. All in all we were very disappointed and will not visit again.

“Excellent location, great service!”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

Hearing that after 15th of June the heat goes up to 45 degrees, we decided to spend a week in Egypt and we choose Hyatt. I can say now it was the best choice, both as location and service.
First thing we noticed was that you cannot enter the resort without passing through a checkpoint. Every time you go back and forth they ask you to go through the gate. As I understood there were quite some bomb attack and they take all precautions. They are very polite, so this won`t bother you that much.
People from reception were the best staff ever saw. They speak lot of languages, very polite, ready to assist you in any way. We knew we paid for a sea view room, but when we got inside, we had a biiig wall in front of us. So we ask to change the room and they did, in less than 20 minutes. A better one, with an excellent view.
The resort has 7 floors, where 2 is the beach (don`t ask me about the 1st and ground floor). You can either take the elevator or take a long walk from the reception to the beach. It`s going to take you around 10 to 15 minutes to get there, but there are nice alleys, lots of vegetation. Beside, you can stop at every floor, because you`ll find either a pool, a masage table or a restaurant.
The room is large, you have a nice minibar, excellent choice of TV station, coffe maker, large balcony with chaise-longues (if you`re too lazy, get a tan right from the balcony), very nice bathroom, with tub and shower separately. Don`t expect brand new furniture in the room, but the one they have is ok. Cleaning service comes 3 times a day, and, by pressing just one botton, you let them know if you`re inside and you don`t want to be disturbed.
The beach is not that big or large, and the sand has quite a red color. But I can say Hyatt spent a lot of money to have a proper beach comparing with other resorts. Check the photo taken from a boat. Some resort don`t even have a beach, but you get pools instead.
Food is just fine. Everybody has breakfast in the main restaurant, which is big, has a lot of tables outside, and food for every taste. I was expecting more fruits, but ...they have fresh squeezed juices, and I`m not talking just about orange here. :) We went halfboard, and for the evening we had the choice to to the other restaurants from resort (they have a few). But mainly we spent time at the main one and it was just fine.
Prices are ok. For one week where we ordered whatever we wanted, including a couple of bottles of wine, lots of juice, coffes, even did some shopping in the resort (some gifts for friends, egyptian clothes, etcc) we paid only 500 USD.
One day we rented a car with a driver and went to St. Catherine, a very old monastery 350 km away from Sharm. It was worthed!! We paid 75 USD and we had the car and driver at our disposal from 6 am to 7 pm, wherever we wanted to go. If you get the chance, take this trip, the scenery is outstanding. At St. Catherine they have the oldest religious paintings and relicvs, both jewish and orthodox.
Scuba diving was ok, but I can say it`s far from what we saw in Maldives or other places. Beside that, most of instructors are russians, they speak poor english. For a serious dive, you have to go to Sharm harbour, where at every 5 minutes leave at least 10 boats. There are dive places where you have to wait for other groups to leave so you can dive.
Overall, it was a great holiday. When we left, they announced us that if we`ll come second time in less than one year, we`ll get a 20 percent discount. So, they really want you back. We`ll go, for sure.
