Just returned from our honeymoon in Sharm. We spent the last three nights in the Hyatt Regency, as we figured it would be nice to end the holiday in a luxury hotel. The other hotel we stayed at was the Melia Sinai, a budget 5 star.
On arrival at the Hyatt it was clear that this was a much classier establishment than the Melia Sinai. In fact, we had a hard time persuading the security guards to let us in (I don't think they are used to having guests arrive in an unmarked taxi from another hotel). We arrived early for check in, and without our passports (long story) but the reception staff couldn't have been more helpful - we had a complimentary drink in the lounge while the passport problem was resolved and then were let into our room before the stated check-in time.
The room was very nice although the only major difference from the cheaper hotel was the bathroom: a separate shower and toilet and posher toiletries! One downside is that we were a long walk from the beach - even using the lift. Our cleaner Ali did a great job everyday: we came back to our room after a day on the beach to find the air conditioning had alrady been turned on and ambient background music playing!
What really set the Hyatt apart from the Melia Sinai was the quality of the food - it is second to none. Lunches at the Beach House bar were a highlight - freshly grilled fish and seafood salads and home made ice cream. We ate at the open-air Souk two nights and had one dinner at Sala Thai. All the meals were excellent but the Thai restaurant was the best. Yes it is pricey. Lunches and dinners added £70 a day to our bill, and we only drank bottled water. Drinks were on average twice the price of the Melia Sinai, and imported alcoholic drinks were exorbitant. Luckily, we didn't want them, but if you do, prepare to pay £50 for a bottle of wine.
The clientele are also a different breed here: far fewer European package tourists, more British, American and indeed Egyptian families.
We spent most of our time on the beach or in the sea. The beach we found to be more crowded than Melia Sinai, but head for the parasols to the left of the jetty for more privacy. One of the main reasons we chose the Hyatt is the reputation of the house reefs. There are three nearby dive sites with good reefs: the Middle Garden is immediately in front of the hotel beach, the Near Garden is down the coast towards Sharm and the Far Garden is in the other direction. A competent snorkeller can easily reach the Near and Far Gardens. The corals are wonderful and we saw a huge variety of sea life including moray eels, spotted eagle rays and a huge Napoleon wrasse. We also did a snorkelling trip to Ras Mohammed but to be honest it wasn't much better!
Overall the Hyatt comes with a definite recommendation. It is a class above the budget 5 star hotel. Be prepared for the expense of food and drink, and you will have a wonderful time.
