“Just Returned”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

We have just returned from the Hyatt Regency. We had a standard partial sea view room in the Acacia Block. This was in the second row back from the sea and as it was higher than the first row we had a nice view of the sea from our balcony. There are pros and cons about this place. Our room was kept spotlessly clean and was in fact cleaned twice daily not just the normal turn down service but the young man actually mopped the floors and checked we had towels etc and put soft music on our television for our return from the day. The timing of this was quite good as in some other hotels they interupt you to do this when you are trying to get ready for the evening. I have to say that the whole hotel was kept very clean. I agree with the previous review though about the flies on the food and the birds eating from table while the guests were up getting more food or drink. One morning I saw the birds walking all over the cakes on display in the restaurant. Both my husband and myself had upset stomachs one or the other of us most days. We put this down to the heat and dehydration as it was exceptionally hot even late at night. Our room was always cool with either the air con or the overhead fan even though the air conditioning system could be noisy. I found the bed very comfortable and the nice fresh sheets every day was wonderful.

The majority of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Having said that our check in wasn't very efficient. When we arrived hoping to receive a warm welcome there were three short queues at Reception which moved very slowly. A young man did come round and give you a glass of juice while you were standing there. The girl was obviously under pressure because she hardly spoke and certainly didn't smile or say welcome. She just stared at the computer for a long time and we noticed on our key card that one room number had been crossed out and another substituted so we were not sure if she was having a problem finding a suitable room for us. Then a young man took us to our room and he was pleasant but I don't think his English was very good and he didn't show us how anything worked we had to work it out for ourselves not always easy when you have been travelling for hours and are tired. We also found the swimming pools rather cold but as all the pools are part of a moving waterfall and the water is moving all the time it doesn't get a chance to warm up. The Pool Butlers were always very helpful and friendly especially Mustafa at the Quiet Pool. The waiters around the pool were really nice and ran up and down all day (the equivalent of 7 floors over the hillside) to the Cascade Restaurant to get food and drink. The beach was never really too crowded and the floating jetty was great and you could always see amazing fish when ever you went along there. There was a beach restaurant where we had lunch on two occasions which was pleasant. We mostly ate at Cascades at lunch time or had something brought to our sunbeds (how lazy is that)! I am vegetarian although my husband isn't and I found it easier to find something to eat at lunchtime than in the evenings. We ate at the Souk, the Thai and the main restaurant in the evenings as well as going into Naama Bay by taxi on some other evenings. The hotel prices for food and drink are high. We paid £20.00 for a bottle of the same wine as we paid £8.00 for in a restaurant in Naama Bay. This was basic local wine. On two occasions once in the Thai and once when we went a la carte in the main restaurant they charged us £5.50 for a bottle of water with our meal. It wasn't that expensive in the Souk or by the pool. I didn't find the hotel very sophisticated. I like to dress up in the evening and have a nice meal in a nice restaurant with good service. They only have one restaurant that would fit this bill that is the Cascades which is transformed at night and overlooks the pools. Unfortunately its specialty is steak and you can cook your own steak on a hot stone. Being vegetarian when I looked at the menu they had some very nice starters that I could have eaten and then all the rest was steak or steak with foie gras or some other very heavy duty meat. This was a pity as I loved the setting and waiters looked very smart. Although they promote the Thai as being seriously good we didn't find it to be. It seemed more like a children's cafe the evening we were there even though it was after 8 pm and children are not supposed to be allowed after 8 pm. The food was OK but the menu is not vast and again being vegetarian not much choice. I found one member of staff who obviously thought she was far more superior than the guests to be almost rude. She came up to the table and asked me if I was Mrs Wicks and when I said "No" she just said "No" - What is your room number? When I told her she just walked off without any explanation. We found that some staff demand your room number before they even say hello. Although most staff and I mean most are lovely a few give the impression that they work for this wonderful hotel and they are more important than the guest! I think the hotel believes itself to be six star and charges six star priceswhen in some areas it just scrapes in as a four star. Service is friendly which is great in that setting but it is not as slick as say top Cypriot Hotels. Another thing I found very strange was that I never saw a manager. For instance they don't have a manager's cocktail party or anything similar so that you can meet the team as other good hotels do. I thought all the staff looked great in their various uniforms and were very smart. Overall I would have to say due to the setting and the cleanliness it deserves it's five star category.

“great hotel BUT”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

Have been back for over a week after 13 nights at the Hyatt in a club room. We holiday a lot in 5 star hotels and felt this one was fantastic offering great value for money. We never left the hotel.
However for the last seven days I suffered from acute gastroentiritis which thoroughly spoiled my stay. I saw the hotel doctor and was given copious courses of antibiotics. There were flies on buffet food sometimes and birds allowed to peck at buffets..even in the Club House. Also the irrigation water for the gardens smelled disgusting -think it must be "grey water" from showers maybe?
The place is dominated by Russian guests who take over and are load, rude and very annoying as they shout loadly on their mobile phones and have no awareness of their fellow guests.
The service levels are generally good but not consistantly so.
Reasearch since we have been home about this bacterial gastro-entiritis reveal that it is commonplace in Egypt due to low levels of hygiene.
Recent publicity in the British press confirm this.
We will not return. We had pre paid for half board and were charged for the doctors visits -on cruise ships you are not charged if you go down with a stomach bug!!

stayed for a week, the hotel is in a lovely position with breathtaking views over the red sea.
all the staff very friendly nothing to much trouble, the pools are a little cold when you first get in could do with a bit of heat..
superb food in all the restaurants best one was the thai.
breakfast time after about 9.00am gets a bit busy went earliar and got a table on the terrace every morning
had interconnecting rooms the block we stayed in was azalia cant fault the rooms only recently built so we were told, also had swimming pool right outside as it was a bit further away from the main pool area and hotel,if you want a nice quiete spot for sunbathing find your way there also the pool was a bit warmer .
all in all a great time and will certainly be going back in the near future.

“Just ok”

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh Resort

Booked for a week at the Hyatt Regency as it had the best reviews on trip advisor....booked for a week B&B with a sea view room. On arrival at the Hyatt, we were made to wait to get our room key and then when we got to the room, it was facing a wall...we moved rooms only to be given an interconnecting room with a family and screaming baby next door but were assured the family were leaving the next night which they did.

The room was very very average, no where near a 5 * but am guessing Egyptian 5* is different from English !!

The toilet was not at all clean, the shower backed up and a light on the balcony didn't work...I went to reception and reported them and was promised it would be done, but it wasn't so the next day we went back and asked for Housekeeping to come to the room and do it whilst we were there which they did.

I would think that the basic rooms which we stayed in are desperately in need of an update, the furniture is very old wooden furniture and wouldn't look out of date in a dodgy B&B!!

On the plus side, the breakfast buffet is very good, if you don't get barged out the way by a Russian! We ate at the hotel for lunch a couple of times and for dinner mainly in the souk were i thought the food was very good.

The best part of the hotel was definitely the snorkelling - the reef at the hotel is definitely one of the best areas for this.

A good hotel, not 5 star by any means though.

Overall this is a very nice hotel, great facilities, with plenty of restaurants to choice from. The only real bad thing about this hotel is the price of food and drink. You pay about £3.50 for a beer, which is way more expensive than we paid elsewhere in Egypt.
The restaruants are varied with something to suit all tastes, but again, can cost a bit, especially the Thai one. We found that the lunchtime offerings we a bit limited, I think they need to offer more light snacks.
The room was very nice and spacious, very clean with all the facilities you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
