“Clean place, nice staff, great views!”

Flagship Resort

May 10, 2008

My friend and I stayed in the Flagship for one night while he attended the Van Halen concert. He loved the concert and we really liked the hotel. It is my second time there and his first.
The hotel is at the farthest end of the Boardwalk and they have built up the area since I was there last. Our room had a balcony and we had an amazing view of the ocean and of the city. The city lights almost reminded me of Vegas.

The room was bigger than what we expected. Since it is an all suite hotel we should have brought food to cook as we had a fridge, stove and microwave, but there is always next time. Amenities were okay, there is a dvd player in the room, two televisions with cable and HBO. More important than any of these however was the fact that the room was clean and there were no bed bugs.

The hotel has one resteraunt which is just okay. The servers are very nice but the food was so-so. Prices were okay as well. The resteraunt also has amazing views.

The place also has a pool with a jacuzzi on the side. Since this place has a lot of families they have an adult only swim from 9-10 pm. In addition there is a theater for the kids and video games, two pool tables, and a juke box in the rec room.

Hotel also has a fitness center which has great views and was equipped with what appeared to be pretty up to date cardio equipment and free weights.

I almost forgot to write that the hotel also offers a free shuttle from the hotel to Bally's hotel which is like 10-15 min away. The shuttle leaves from the hotel every hour on the hour. It leaves from Bally's 15 min after the hour. It runs until 12 am. Atlantic city also has several jitneys that run up and down the main street. Main street not as scary as I thought it would be (in the day time) and the jitney is 2.00 in coins or dollar bills.

It's a good hotel, in a good spot and we had a good time.

“Had a Fine Stay”

Flagship Resort

We spent a week at the Flagship 21-28 March 2008. After all the mixed reviews we read, some of them quite bad, we were apprehensive about staying there. Bottom line: we thought the place was just fine. I’ll give you our impressions in three categories. First, the small gripes. Second, the bad things we read from other reviews we thought were bogus. Third, the good stuff.

First, there were some small problems, but they were consistent with most of the other time-share experiences we’ve had over the years. Most of these time-share properties are a little older and are starting to show wear and tear. Flagship was no different. There were some scuff marks on the paint and wallpaper. One of the spare blankets had an old cigarette burn hole in it. The heater/AC units were old-fashioned hotel-style appliances and you had to flip open a metal hatch to get to the controls. The living room heater just blew cold air; we should have complained, but never got around to it since the one in the bedroom worked well enough to warm the whole unit. There was a largish gap under the unit’s front door that let in some occasional hall noise. But it wasn’t really bad, and at night, I put down a towel on the gap and that kept things plenty quiet. Like in most time-share condos, housekeeping doesn’t come every day. And don’t wait until the afternoon on the designated day to take down the “Do Not Disturb” sign—they didn’t come after lunch (though they did quickly bring clean towels when we called). You have to leave clean dishes when you check out, but once more, this is pretty standard in a time-share. The restaurant opened about 10 minutes late one morning when I was desperate for some coffee, since I had run out in the room, but I got my fix eventually.

Second, we read some complaints we just don’t get. Some people thought the place was in a “ghetto.” That’s a gross exaggeration. To the west is a little village of cute, new-construction vacation cottages—you can see the Borgata right behind them. Now to the east toward the ocean and little ways to the south, there are some distressed blocks, some of them pretty bad. But that’s what the ENTIRE CITY is like. Atlantic City is a motley mix of luxury areas, older working class neighborhoods, and bad neighborhoods. There are both tourists and poor people on every street. No matter where you stay, you’ll have to use common sense about where you walk at night. If you don’t like that, you won’t like Atlantic City. Someone complained about the distance from the casino action. Flagship is at the far north end of Atlantic Avenue, where it dead ends at the water. We LIKED being away from the noise and congestion. And if you have a car (we did) there’s nothing more than 10 minutes away in Atlantic City. The mattress was firm (another reviewer complaint) but we LIKE them like that, and had no trouble sleeping at all. The elevators (another complaint theme) were slow at peak times, but we actually timed the worst waits—normally nothing more than about 3 minutes, with one long wait during the week that went to about 5 minutes. We’ve been on similarly slow elevators in big city hotels, and if you used them during off peak times, there was no trouble at all. And yes, the maintenance people use the same elevators as the guests. I don’t get why that’s a problem to some reviewers—it’s not the Bellagio, it’s a time-share. But maybe as they remodel, they’ll add some capacity. If you want access to a modern supermarket, stock up before you get into the city—there’s an IGA under construction but it’s not done yet. It’s mostly small corner markets, but there are tons of places to get take out. Some people complained about the color scheme in the rooms—get a life! It was just fine. In fact when we closed the thick/dark curtains they did a great job blocking the sunshine when we were sleeping in.

Third, the clearly positive things about the place. They happily honored our request to be away from any renovation that was going on—they gave us a corner one-bedroom unit on the 27th floor. The views of the ocean and the city were BEAUTIFUL. The balconies were roomy and there was NO pigeon dung (another reviewer complaint—I suspect some moron had been feeding the birds). The security in the garage was good, with an attendant and room-key entrance to the building proper. The restaurant was pleasant, with decent food and nice views. The workout room was very good, with all the equipment and great views of the ocean. The rooms were CLEAN, spacious and comfortable. Some reviews talked about rude staff, but we didn’t see a BIT of that. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful—maybe they read some bad reviews and corrected the problem?

Anyway, all the pro’s and con’s considered, we had a fine stay. It’s a typical time-share property. We’ll go back. The underside of Atlantic City notwithstanding, there are cool things to see and do there (casinos with shows, the boardwalk, developments on the piers, some really great local eateries and bars), and we also took advantage of the close proximity to Philly, and just a little farther down the road, NYC (caught an opera at the Met!).

“Stinky Birthday”

The room looked good and the staff was nice. The smell was just overly smoky. We were in a non smoking room but the stench stayed for the whole night. We even opened the balcony doors to let it air out. No luck. And they were trying to sell these units as timeshares. No way.

“Four Strars - I don't think so!”

I cannot believe that you have this facility rated 4 stars. When is the last time you were there? The lobby was not very clean and unimpressive. The wait for an elevator was at least 5 minutes or longer EVERY time we used it. The first room we were given had hair on the sheets and overall appeared to be from the 1960 era. After be "upgraded" the housekeeping weas no better. The hallways smelled and were very dark. The outside of the room doors were covered with handprints. Four Stars -- I don't think so.

“Maybe, but only on a Budget?”

We stayed at Flagship one night after one night at the Tropicana. While we got more space and a better view at the Flagship for less money, we missed the room service, sound proof rooms, and better mannered guests at the Trop.
First, we drove up Atlantic ave to the Flagship and really noticed how far away it is from everything else. Nothing but row houses, empty lots and random stores near flagship (except the liquor store around the corner).
Check in, around 4pm went smoothly, and our room was ready at that time. We requested an ocean view and got it, no problem. Parking was $5 and convenient to get to right next door, there was no valet. Our 8th floor room was a very large Metropolitan Suite, with couch/tv/dining table, kitchen area, etc. The balcony was nice but it looked over the pool area, so they could see you and you could see them. We had an ocean/city veiw which was very nice. SHould have gotten a higher floor though. Within 30mins of settling in we got a call from Time share people and politely turned them down.
Everything was fine until dinner time. At around 7pm we called the restaurant to order room service (or so we thought). However since they only have the hostess answering one line, we constantly got a busy signal or no answer for like 15 mins! Then I called every other number on the directory to figure out what was going on, and still no answer. Finally I got an answer from the conceirge (who prob. thought I was calling about the time share), who told me there was no room service and to keep calling so i could order take out. I went to pick up the food, but I had to order drinks at the bar seperately, which was awkward becuase I had to stand around, flag down the bartender, wait 10 mins for him to find a chilled bottle, and all the while in my relaxed clothes becuase I thought I would be in and out.
So anyway, the food was decent, burger was dry but edile. Pizza was very good as well as wings. Also they had some event going on in half the restuarant for time share people, thus you couldn't get a table w/out 30min wait.
Overall our night ended well, or so we thought. At around 4:00am, a loud group of drunkies came back to their rooms (or rather the hallway!) and started shouting in slurred speak and made bad attempts to plan some kind of party. After about 15 mins of trying to bear it, I called the front desk, and they sent security up imediately. Despite this, the ruckuss continued for another 10 mins from the doors opening and slamming. Rooms need to be sound proofed better if you are catering to budget Atlantic City travelers.
Upon check out I made sure to check out early, but even at 10:30 the elevators were no where to be found. As a result I walked down the 8 flights to the lobby and checked out fine.
Overall the service was good( except for ordering food). The view was awesome. However, unless you are a large group, don't mind college spring breakers, or are on a budget, I would not stay here.
