“Charming Highlight of Dalat”

Sofitel Dalat Palace

5 of 5 stars
Incline Village, Nevada

Note that this is a top review, but it's not for a 5 star property. This hotel is not a modern luxury hotel with all contemporary amenities. E.g. there is no gym, no elevators (3 storey only), no AC (not needed), etc. But you get a very workable comfortable hotel which has more charm than anything else i have been at. In fact, the town of Dalat is OK, maybe even a bit disappointing (my private tour guide was at a loss as to what he should show me after 2 1/2 hours) but this hotel alone is worth the trip. It is a total throw back to French provincial Vietnam in the 1920s (not a bad time to be thrown back to!) Contemporary furniture, bath fixtures, creaky wood floors, locks with regular keys, fresh flowers in the rooms etc. Technology has been updated (Wifi) but hidden so as to not intrude on the experience. Dinner at the restaurant - the french one - is a celebration with tuxedoed waiters, candle lights, live piano and great food. The staff is not perfect, English is sometimes broken, but they make up for it with charm and attitude. They really are glad to be there. Compared to other properties of the caliber, even in VN, this is inexpensive. 3 course dinner in the Vietnamese bistro with beer came to US$12.50. The French restaurant was about $40 per person.

Fantastic location with beautiful very big gardens, stunning views overlooking the lake.Wonderful old buiding with lots of antiques and period bedrooms.Bedrooms a little small and dark.Hotel rather souless.Easy walking distance to town, market and lots of resteraunts.Great advantage is this location is quiet.Apart from the nearby Novotel other hotels are situated in very noisy streets.A/C is not needed or available in Dalat so usually windows have to be left open.It is worth a couple of days visit but no more.

“Average but over priced and over-rated. Not 5 stars maybe 3”

Sofitel Dalat Palace

This hotel has been reviewed by other TripAdvisor contributors as being ,"A majestic colonial hotel." My wife and myself were less impressed.

Overall the 5 star rating given to this hotel is difficult to understand. This is the Government of Vietnam's rating which is apparently not on par with international ratings. The only thing that was 5 star was the price.

Though it is newly renovated we were expecting a real colonial hotel with the extravagance one can expect of an old British Hotel in India. This was not the case. The supposed "antiques" were brand new replicas that were hardly majestic.

The service one would expect from a 5 star hotel was fully absent. I had better service from a 15$ guest house I stayed in the night after we left Dalat Palace. For the near $500USD we paid for one night I'd say this was a big disappointment. The room and bed were nice but its worth in my guess about $80. No pool, average food and Dalat was not that great either

“10 year Wedding anniversary”

Sofitel Dalat Palace

Jan 2, 2008

We don't normally stay in 5 star hotels but we wanted a special Hotel for 2 nights in an amazing location, so we chose the Sofitel Dalat Palace in Vietnam for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were picked up at the Airport by the hotel's chauffeur/guide and got to stop at a local waterfall (Datanla Falls) on the way to the hotel. Because it was our Anniversary and not quite high season we were upgraded to a front balcony suite with fantastic views to Xuan Huong Lake. The suite & balcony were massive with 5 metre ceilings and fresh fruit, flowers and Champagne waiting for us when we checked in.
Other reviews have mentioned their dislike of the sit down bath tub/shower but we both enjoyed the experience. Breakfast was expensive ($12US) but worth having for the 5 star service and range of food. We also dined at the hotel's French restaurant "Le Rabelias" once for the experience but is was very quiet (so not much atmosphere) and the meal was below par (lobster was actually tough) but it is a beautiful looking restaurant. We also had to cross the road to the nearby Novotel Hotel to have a massage. Harry's Bar downstairs is a great spot for a cold beer before and after dinner. A fantastic local restaurant to visit is the Wild Sunflower at 49 Truong Cong Dinh (less than $2US in a taxi) - one of the best meals we had in Vietnam and we ate there twice in the one day.
The Sofitel Palace is a great old French Building. Will stay again.
Also, if you're game use the Easyrider motor bike service to get out of Dalat and see the countryside - heaps of fun.

“Utterly gorgeous”

Sofitel Dalat Palace

May 31, 2007

We had a bumpy start to our stay at the Dalat Palace in May, but nothing could overshadow the magnificence of this grand hotel!

We had booked 3 nights and really, were only visiting Dalat to stay here. So we were devastated when, on arrival, we were told they had overbooked, and that we'd have to stay at the Novotel for the first night. They did upgrade our room at the Novotel, however this hotel was well below the standards we were looking for.

But the next morning we were swiftly transferred to our magnificent Dalat Palace suite, and all was forgiven! It was the most opulent room we've ever seen - full of character and old-world charm thanks to the little touches, like genuine antique furniture, chandeliers, oil paintings, a claw-footed bath tub and a canopied bed. Our suite was enormous, on the top floor and had a magnificent view over the lake and gardens form the balcony.

Didn't eat dinner on-site but indulged in high tea, which was magnificent. Take the time to stroll around the hotel and take in all the nooks and crannies - it is a truly magnificent property.

Agree with other reviewers' comments about the hand-held showers - nice to look at, but a pain to use. However hotel staff told us that the property is about to undergo room renovations, which include brand new showers.

If you're a golf nut, I recommend a game at the Dalat Palace Course. Spectacular scenery and a great course, plus hotel guests get a big green fee discount.

Had a lovely massage in the hotel's new spa, where the staff were just lovely. However it was very expensive, the facilities weren't great and the CD player skipped, stopped and jumped all through the treatment (making it a bit hard to drift off and relax!).

Our only major complaint (apart from the double-booking) would be that I arrived back to the room one day to find 5 housekeeping staff sitting around in our lounge area laughing, chatting and eating the leftover fruit on our coffee table! Certainly didn't expect that from staff in such a high-end hotel and it made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.

Over all this was a gorgeosu place to stay, and by far one of the most incredible heritage hotels I've ever seen. If you visit Dalat, you MUST spend a night here!
