All of the hotels in Sydney CBD and North Sydney were fully booked, so I had to stay further out. In this case the Annam Suites at Petersham in Sydney's inner west. Paid $220 for a ultra modern 2 bedroom (1 double room and 1 twin room), 2 bathrooms (inc one ensuite), huge balcony, some cable plasma large screen TV, full kitchen, dining table, stereo, very comfortable large bed. Overall a great apartment for the price. It was on the second floor, accessible via a lift.
This is really a private apartment block, with some of the apartments rented out by the night by Annam suites.
The location was ok (if you want to be in that part of town - the inner West) - but far from ideal for the CBD Although it's only about 30 mins by train to Town Hall.
While the apartment was fantastic.... there were some quite significant issues:
- There is no aircon, and if you know Sydney, you know that it can get VERY hot and VERY humid. A fan was provided - but that's simply not enough on a steamy Sydney day. A major problem for me.
- There is no broadband internet. That's ok if you are on vacation - but dialup doesn't work for the modern business traveller. It's a shame - as this could have been easily fixed considering that the apartment is already wired for cable TV.
- The checkin - when you arrive at the Petersham location - there is no obvious checkin place, so you are standing outside the front door with no means of working out how to checkin. No sign, no number to call nothing. I worked out to call the number on my reservation, and a guy answered and said "hello" (no "welcome to") just "hello". and I was told what combination of numbers to key into the entry system to get "reception". Again, not good enough.
- The reception is a large hot, untidy room off the main lobby of the apartments. On check-out (which is a bit of a slow process) - the staff seem to be surprised, and hassled when you ask for a receipt.
- The cable TV had a weird combination of cable channels available, but this is a minor point.
- The location is right under the flight path for flights landing at Sydney airport, you get a real close look at the variety of planes !
This place was ok for a family that wants to stay in this location together (in the winter !), buts it's not ideal for business travellers.
