Before I went to Sydney a friend of mine told me to stay anywhere but at this hostel. But by chance I ended up staying one night in this hostel anyway.
I'm very happy that I knew this was a bad place before I got there, else I would have been shocked.
The first thing that hit me was the smell. The awful smell of cigarette smoke in the messy lobby. Then I met the staff. They seemed to fit in. One of them looked like he was either drunk, very very tired or something else.
I was asked where I stayed last night, and this was apparently a routine question. It made me think they get a few guests who are homeless or drug addicts or something like that, so it's best to have some sort of question to find out where guest have been.
The hostel might as well have been named Mess, cause that's what it was. The walls had posters and flyers everywhere, with all sorts of different information. I didn't read it all, but apart from the useful stuff about tours and activities, there were lots of useless stuff printed from the Internet, like jokes and bad humour. There was also a lot of information on free beer and free wine and other sorts of free alcohol. I guess some immature people find that appealing, but what makes me like a hostel is not the promise of free alcohol.
When I got the second floor to find my room I realized why it's name is Maze. It actually was a maze. A maze of dirty hallways.
The room was tiny, with 4 beds. My bed was on the top of a bunk bed. First of all there was no ladder, so when I climbed down I was afraid to step on my roomate who was asleep. Second of all the bed was not very solid, and shaked when someone moved. I'm not exactly heavy, but I don't think I'd dare to sleep in that bed if I was. I'm pretty sure it was meant for kids, and not older teens / young adults who make up the majority of the guest there.
It was dirty, messy and ugly, and I slept with my clothes on. The bathroom was horrible! No way I'd take a shower there. My room faced the street, so there were some traffic noise during the night. I woke up a few times because of it.
I'm sort of glad I stayed at this place that one night, 'cause now I know what a really bad hostel is like. It's nice to have something to compare everything else to. It was better to stay there than sleeping at the airport, but just barely. It was not worth the 30 AUD that I paid.
Stay away from this place. Please. Unless you'd like to stay at the hostel from hell for the experience, then I guess this is the right place.
