Our travel agent recommended the Casa Verardo Hotel to fit with our budget and also for the location. Fortunately she gave my husband detailed directions because I would still be trying to find the hotel! If you're arriving by vaporetto, I'd suggest not taking too many suitcases as there are about three bridges to negotiate before you get to the hotel. When you arrive though, prepare to be charmed. The hotel is a restored sixteenth century palace in an excellent location, about 5 minutes walk to St Marks Square and a little longer to the Grand Canal and the Bridge of Sighs. On arrival, we found our room had been booked as a twin, even though we were on honeymoon. No problems - our room was upgraded for 2 of our 4 nights and it was excellent with a small balcony overlooking a canal. Our second room was much smaller with not much room for our luggage but was still very comfortable and quiet. We found the staff, especially Michael, very friendly and helpful. The breakfast room was beautifully furnished with antiques and a small terrace is available if the weather is nice. The fare was typically Italian with cheese, salami, ham, bread rolls and croissants and good coffee. The courtyard would be a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine if you can find a spare minute from shopping or enjoying beautiful Venice.

We were told of the Verardo by friends who had stayed there earlier, and who were very impressed. We were also impressed! We did know before booking that the room would be small, and that we would have to lug our suitcases a long way, but the staff and the ambience made it all worthwhile. The staff (particularly Michel) were exceedingly helpful in answering all sorts of questions, and in making helpful suggestions. The enclosed patio at the rear of the hotel was a marvelous retreat for a quiet drink. We wanted to stay longer, and, if we are fortunate enough to get back to Venice, this is the hotel at which we will stay.

Returned 2 days ago., it's amazing how varied holiday exoeriences are!
No one could fail to love Venice- but don't go to this hotel.
We thought we chose carefully for our 4 night stay.
The room was too small to open the wardrobe without moving the bed- that is the truth.
2 big windows that couldn't be opened because of elaborate drapes- impossible to open the shutters & get any natural light!
The bed was unspeakably hard- I have never had such consecutively uncomfortable nights-my partner neither- we both came back with bad backs that we didn't go with.
The staff were surly-not waiting staff I add.
On check in the welcome consisted of hello & we can arrange the gondola which will pick you up at the hotel 90 euros for 40 mins.

Poor poor hosting I'm afraid

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in December 2006. Was originally booked into the Casa Kirsch but as they had rooms available in this hotel they asked me if I wanted to move. As I had to come to the Casa
Verardo for breakfast it made sense to move. The room itself was very small but I was expecting this in Venice. However it was clean, pleasantly furnished and had everything you'd expect. What really makes this a good hotel is it's location - it's just round the corner
from St Mark's. That's great for when you're wandering around the city not quite sure where you are as it's always easy to get back to San Marco and find the hotel.

The staff were also very friendly and helpful, making the stay a good
experience.
