Picture this in your mind: you open up the door to your hotel room. It's not a very big room, but it's bright, with dark furniture and two mirrors on the wall. The beds are soft and the sheets are white and clean. Pieces of "welcome chocolates" are lying on the pillows. There is a TV with 30 channels and a minibar with a couple of soft drinks and several bottles of beer. These drinks are free of charge and so is the use of the telephone for calls within Germany. The small bathroom is very clean and so are the towels. Soap, shampoo, body lotion and a showering cap are present. Downstairs, there is a business centre adjacent to the lobby with at least 6 computers with 20 inch monitors with free internet access for the guests of the hotel. In the morning the variety of food to choose from at the buffet type of breakfast is quite large: bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, salmon, salads, various sorts of bread, cheese, meat products, boiled eggs, jams, fruits, milk, yoghurts, juices, corn flakes, noodles, rice, Japanese wrappers, tea, coffee, etc, etc. After breakfast, and after you paid the hotel bill (66 Euro for a double room with breakfast) you walk to the Frankfurter main railway station which is just across the street, some 50 meters away from the hotel.
This describes our one night stay in Hotel Excelsior on our way back home from Mauritius when we had to stay over in Frankfurt before moving further to Basel. Strong points of this hotel are that it is very clean, it has a very good breakfast and it offers very good value for a very reasonable price. In addition it is very close to the railway station. There are no real negative points that come to mind .... sure, you shouldn't expect a hotel porter opening the front door for you, a lobby with lots of shiny brass/copper/gold ornaments and a red carpet nor a liftboy.
