We recently spent several days during the Christmas market season at Hotel Hornburg in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, our favorite town in Germany. This is probably our seventh time staying at the Hornburg. As always, the fantastic hosts, Martin and Gabrielle Wetzel, offer a warm welcome and a true gemutlichkeit experience. The Hornburg is by far the best value for a small hotel in this wonderful medieval city. Located just outside the city wall with great views of the towers, the hotel is in what was once a private villa. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated and all have private baths. At an average price of 95 euro for a double including a bountiful buffet breakfast and copious amounts of great coffee, it just can't be beat. But what truly sets this hotel apart from the rest is the warm atmosphere created by Martin and Gabriele, their young son Carlo and Ola, a big laid-back brown dog that greets guests with a yawn and a lazy wag of his huge tail. Public areas are comfortable with an honor bar and just off the second level common area is a small room with a computer for free internet access for guests' use. Wifi is also available, I believe. The two adjoining breakfast rooms are comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated year 'round but at Christmas time Gabi pulls out all the stops. And we have often seen Martin serving breakfast and joking and chatting with the guests, easily transitioning back and forth between English to German to French while never missing a beat. If you want a spa atmosphere and pampered luxury then the Hornburg is not for you. But if you want to feel like a guest in a German home then try the Hornburg. You will not be disapponted. Their website is great and offers good photos of all the rooms so it is possible to pick and choose one that is just right for you. Your first trip will not be your last. Guaranteed!
