We stayed at the Allegro in October 2004 on a half price Funjet all inclusive vacation. The Allegro is a good value 3 star resort on the edge of Playa Del Carmen. Please note that it is a three star. Many reviewers on this site have clearly gone there with 5 star expectations and so of course they were disappointed.
The hotel is set in acres of beautifully maintained tropical gardens and the rooms are in small thatched buildings. The rooms are spacious enough and clean but no frills and the bathrooms are a little worn. They all enjoy large decks though with chairs and a hammock and it is a real pleasure to lie out surrounded by all the lush foliage.
The beach is pretty but not amazing - if you walk further down the beach to the south it gets wider and less crowded. However, the pools are nice and the beach bar serves all the tropical drinks you could ever want.
The buffet food is extensive and although not exactly gourmet, most people would be able to find something that appeals to them. Buffet food always gets boring after 3 days so I would recommend a meal out in Playa Del Carmen one night. The Italian restaurant at the hotel was hard to get a booking for and if you are only there for 3 or four nights it can be impossible. Our rep managed to wrangle one for us after we complained that the system was badly set up and penalised short stay visitors but unfortunately we were unable to use it in the end as we got back too late from a day trip. Personally, for just a few days, I enjoyed the snack food available from the beach bar.
There are plenty of recreational activities available for free - hobie cat, kayacking etc and for a fee - scuba diving and parasailing and we had a lot of fun with these. I would recommend a day trip to Xcaret which offers lots of activities like floating down underwater rivers, swimming with dolphins and a fantastic butterfly enclosure. Try to go as a group in a taxi. The tour operator excursion was outrageously expensive. They add $30 a head onto the park admission fee to transport you there and it is literally 5 minutes drive away!
I would not go to the Allegro for a honeymoon or to renew my wedding vows but it is an attractive, friendly and fun (but not too noisy) place for couples, singles and families alike who are looking for a good value short break.
