“nice hotel but warning!”

before i write a review let me just warn you about the beach. my husband and i stayed at the royal for four nights and one afternoon we were hanging poolside and heard a woman screaming for help. she was in the ocean and was getting sucked in by this whirlpool. when you get to the hotel you will see a small rock formation that curves and if you get too close to that it could be very dangerous. another couple told us the day before they almost got sucked in too but luckily managed to get away. becareful! they gave the woman oxygen and she revived after about 5 minutes.

as far as our stay goes it was great> i did the online check in and when we got there at 3:30 our room was ready. our room was smack in the middle of the hotel so our view was great.

we were here for our anniversary and had the rose petals on the bed, hot tub, champagne, and a cute lil cake. the beds and pillows here are amazing!! the room was very clean and the balcony was perfect. out first two nights we had to take cold showers!!! we werent getting hot water or warm water. Finally we told the girl who checked us in and she sent maintanance and he showed us how to use the shower but if you have this problem do the same. we arent idiots, we know how to use a shower but theres a certain way to use theirs.

it was so awesome to have a stocked bar and refrigerator. theres soda, water, juices, beer and they get stocked every day. also you have four full size bottles of hard liqour, jack, smirnoff vodka, cazadores tequila, and bacardi. not bad. it felt great opening a beer or soda and not having to worry about paying for it.

The food...i kinda had mixed feelings about it. We ate at every restaurant except the tapas. Pelicanos is good, especially there scallops for lunch. Marie Maries was good too and alex
there is a sweetheart. i liked their mexican lobster bisque, Yummy!!!

we had the tepenyaki at asianas and it was decent too. i was scared to have the sashimi there because the last thing i wanted to do was get sick in cancun but i ordered tuna and salmon sashimi and it was really good and fresh!! there rolls were pretty eeehh. the tempura ice cream was good too, spice was good and the waitors there are so helpful, it doesnt feel like your at a buffet. i was disapointed with the selection of the room service menu. it was pretty limited and didnt have something as simple as pizza. there was like a couple salads, a couple soups, a cheeseburger, 2 sandwiches and about 4 lunch/dinner plates. their breakfast selection is better and the food great.

many people on tripadvisor complained about the portions at the royal but the staff could care less how much you order, they insist actually. the portions arent tiny nor big. every restaurant has appetizers, soups, and salads so order them! i have to say every soup they had was very delicious. feel free to have them bring you what you want. most of the food is fancy and by the fifth night we just wanted normal food so we went to rainforest cafe for pizza and wings. i love fancy food too but for breakfast lunch and dinner you kinda get over it. the menus never change at the restaurants so it can get a bit repetitive.

they have this 24 hour lounge which is pretty cool, it had pool tables, tvs, food, soft drinks, and liqour!! their coffe house is great too with lots of sweet goodies.

we had a couples massage which was done great but i was a bit disapointed because the room we had our massages in was so cold from the AC and when you get a massage your supposed to be relaxed at room tempature.

i was vvery impressed by the staff here. they are all so nice and attentive. we always tipped and it looked like everyone else did too. remember that in mexico minimum wage is $8 A DAY not hour and the people who are making your drinks, serving your food, cleaning your room, opening your door, etc are all getting just that. think about it, THATS $48 A WEEK!!!!!! they work so hard its hard not to tip a couple bucks. when we had a nice dinner we tipped $4-$5, whats that to us?

the hotel was always clean and everyone helpful. if you are into working out you have to check out the gym. VERY IMPRESSIVE! overall this hotel was great and worth going. we saved alot of money not buying drinks or taking taxis to eat out three times a day. it was nice lounging at the pool all day and just walking to a hotel restaurant to eat and not worrying about getting ready.

“Loved-Loved-Loved The Royal Cancun!!”

We have just returned from The Royal Cancun (5/14 to 5/19)...and did not want to come home!! It was hands down the BEST all-inclusive resort we have ever stayed at! The food was outstanding and presented in a gourmet style in all the restaurants...except for the one buffet style restaurant they had. However, the one buffet restaurant they had...they made omelets, pancakes, waffles, hamburgers, ect...while you waited! It's not your typical “all-restaurants-are buffets”, type of resort...or the "golden-corral" style buffet either! We were very impressed with the flavor and presentation of all the restaurants. Pelicanos also serves breakfast.

The rooms are spacious and not the typical musty smelling rooms you get in Cancun. The beds were also VERY COMFORTABLE!! I think all of the rooms were Ocean View as well. THE ROOMS WERE VERY NICE and the nightly turn-down service was a nice treat!

Pool is very relaxing – ask for Ceasar if you are at the pool. Very nice man and will even advise you on how to get that “golden” tan during your stay. (He is off on Thursdays)
Also – if you happen to have Guadalupe serving drinks around the pool, she is by far the nicest waitress there!!

We did the on-line check in. Got the room we were assigned. Wasn’t ready until around 3pm, but no biggie – we had our bathing suits in our carry-on and just headed to the pool! =)

Overall, very nice hotel and the staff is very friendly. We will return next year!!

P.S. PLEASE TIP THE STAFF…A FEW DOLLARS GOES A LONG WAY, AND THEY WORK HARD FOR IT!

We stayed in an upgraded, ocean-view room on the 7th floor, great view of the ocean and pool area. All check-in personnel were cheerful and made it easy. We were immediately tracked-down by a person wanting to sign us up for a "welcome breakfast", 90 minutes to explain "all the hotel amenities". I said I was not interested in a timeshare presentation, we had a few minute debate over whether this qualified as a time share presentation - I blew it off and fully enjoyed the remainder of my stay.

The food is not great, but this is Mexico! I've never had great food in Mexico, so I got about what I expected. The all-inclusive was fun, we tried every restaurant on the property and every drink at the bar.

They have beds around the pool to lounge on, you can drop linen sides to block out the sun, I found this much more relaxing than the pool chairs, although you must get down to the pool before 0800 if you expect to claim a good spot.

“Beautiful Resort!”

The Royal Cancun

May 18, 2008
6/8 found this review helpful

My fiance and I stayed at the Royal for 5 fabulous nights in a royal corner suite. We checked in online 48 hours before we arrived. We had no problems when we arrived and we got the room we were assigned.
Like most of you I haunted Trip Advisor for a month before we left, looking at pictures and reading reviews. Let me tell you that as beautiful as the pictures are, they don't even do it justice. When we arrived in our suite, it was decorated with towel art, rose petals, champagne, and cake - I had seen a million photos of this -but when I walked in and saw my suite..no words can describe! The turquoise ocean view alone, much less the GEORGEOUS room. I was blown away! I just kept walking around and saying "oh my gosh oh my gosh!." (only down side to our suite was that it was on the 4th floor on the spa side which means that it is directly above the kid's pool area at the Flamingo resort next door - kid's screaming can mess with the ambience you get with the spa music and ocean sounds but we told ourselves that at least the kid sounds were happy kids having fun.)
The entire resort is simply beautiful - loved our suite-designated cabana! Great for an afternoon siesta (or to doze off a few pina coladas!)
The food was OK, but not consistant. It was almost like "faux" food. It looked like food, and was presented in such a pretty way, but then it had no flavor whatsoever. I had a really bad experience at Marie Maria the third night where my beef was literally just hunks of fat and gristle which I had to spit out. I think the best place to eat would have to be Pelicanos because it is right on the water. Asianas was OK - we had sushi which was good - not a lot of selection but the service was good. Breakfast at Spice or room service was great! I loved the churros with caramel! Omelettes were yummy. Coffee great. Try the mexican coffee at the coffee bar! They flame it and coat the rim of the glass with toasted sugar.
The drinks were OK but also inconsistant and very weak. You could always order extra shots to pour in them to jazz them up a bit, but the booze they use is pretty rough. You can ask for specific brand names but that is a crap shoot also. You can ask for a margarita and get a margarita, or you can ask for a margarita and get a weird blue drink which the bartender insists is a margarita. Aaaaah you let the small things go - you ARE in paradise after all!!!
The beach is getting bigger - when we were there they were working on it and they have made a lot progress. Please be careful in the ocean water though - that current is very strong, especially if you have a few drinks in you. Also, we wore water shoes just in case.
Overall: beautiful resort, good service!!
If you are heading to The Royal I am jealous of you!! I hope you have a great time!! ps, dont forget that you can use all of the facilites at the spa even if you are not getting a treatment. Check it out, it is fantastic!!!

The Royal cancun resort is a definate return spot for us. We stayed in a Royal Corner Suite (541) for 11 nights begining 5/1/08. The weather was fantastic, only raining for 10 minutes the whole time we were there.

I travel alot for work all over the world and this was my wife's first international trip. I did a lot of research before booking The Royal in Cancun as I wanted something special for my wife and I to celebrate 30 wonderful years together (we are 47 - 51 years of age). I read many reviews about this resort, most were positive and some were negative. I must say that we have nothing at all to complain about. Oh ya, there was this one time when they didn't do the turn down service. Outside of that....the resort was beautiful, the staff was friendly, the service was excellent, the food was awsome, and we left feeling quite content without gaining one pound. That was a plus as far as we were concerned, but it was quite possible to over indulge if that was our wish.

I can't say that everyone will experience this resort or any other resort the way we did, but I believe there are those that can never be pleased no matter what. If you want to find goodness, there is plenty of it at the Royal Cancun. If you want to find something to complain about, you will find it no matter where you go....so stay out of our resort.
