“Don't Buy the Timeshare”

Sunset Lagoon Resort Hotel & Marina

Jan 5, 2008
1/1 found this review helpful

We booked through RCI, and were lied to about the timeshare tour. We were stuck with the salesperson for over 6 hours. It took us another 3 days to get all of our 'free' stuff, which really wasn't free cause everything you would want to do on the tours was extra.

The Hotel was older, and dated, but the Staff were fantastic. Don't confuse the hotel staff with the timeshare staff, you think they are the same but they are two different departments. The sales staff will say whatever they think you want to hear, acurate information or not. The timeshare staff is called the concierge, which if you don't know any better is very confusing.

The food was not the greatest, and if you want good coffee, hot chocolate, real butter or anything like that you have to ask for it.

The best tour was Excaret, just for the evening show. There are a few other tours called the ecofriendly tours. They take smaller groups, have more activites, and take you to sites that are off the beaten tourist trap track.

“beautiful, but definitely downsides”

Sunset Lagoon Resort Hotel & Marina

The room and hotel itself was beautiful. We had a deck w/a hot tub and beautiful room. The resort was also beautiful. HOWEVER, we did see roaches, just a couple. The restaurant closed at like 4 and dinner service didn't start until 7pm. You could get no food between that time. Room service is limited and when we did opt for that, they only brought a few things we asked for and when we called back to get the rest, they never showed up. The food was not to my liking at all, so for having to pay for all-inclusive, found ourselves hungry much of the time. The staff at the main restaurant would not look at you or come to your table if you didn't tip them, well! They would remember you and not even come to your table the next time. We found ourselves getting our own drinks, etc. much of the time, even w/tips! The nightly shows don't start till like 9pm which is to late for kids, we did go to one, and it was terrible, we left w/in a few minutes. The pool and slide is nice, but it is on the lagoon, and really no beach, so you couldn't swim anywhere but the cold pool. The lagoon is completely covered in weeds. We stayed at the Blue Bay Club for a week prior coming to here (which has a lower rating), but loved that place! The rooms weren't as nice, but the food, staff, entertainment, ocean, etc. way exceeded our stay at the Sunset Lagoon.

“We will return to Sunset Lagoon”

The Sunset lagoon is a different type of resort than the mega hotels that are all throughout Cancun. The rooms are set up like little villas or apartments depending on what size room you need. There are studios, one bedroom, and two bedroom. Our group had the two bedroom and it was perfect. We had a second floor room and the second bedroom was actually on a third floor of the building. We each had our own bathrooms, jacuzzis, tvs. The minibar was stocked daily and when we called for extra they brought it promptly. The property has a number of options for activities some of which we participated in were the Am yoga stretch, bike riding and pottery painting by the pool ( you have to pay for your piece first) Mine was a pretty picture frame and it is a special souvenir because I painted it myself.
The food was nice, I especailly love the green juice at breakfast. The staff were all quite accomodating and our lobster dinner in the ala carte restuarant was superb. They have different themed dinners each night AND a show. You just can't beat the expereince you get for the price! We will definitely go back to the Sunset Lagoon!

“Great place to stay...don't go to the sales presentation”

We had a great time in Cancun but you need to avoid the sales people. Most of what they told was was completely not true. They said that we could hand over our other timeshares, get a discount and then we'd be given a cash payment from the government for our taxes because we released that property. The bottom line is, these sales people will say ANYTHING to get you to buy their property.

That being said, I really had a great time at the resort. My kids loved it and it was one of the best vacations we've ever had. Why don't these sales people sell it for what it is rather than what it's not? I think they taint not only a great resort but the entire industry and they should all be fired.

“Excellent Place to Relax!!!”

Sunset Lagoon Resort Hotel & Marina

4 of 5 stars
California

I don't understand some of these bad reviews that I am seeing posted. Some comments about the price of taxis, airport hassle, and general Mexico annoyances, are obviously from people who have never been and will never appreciate Mexico. Mexico is very beautiful and my favorite spot to relax but do not expect it to be like Hawaii or Florida. Yes you might need to barter a little with the cab drivers, or put up with people at the airport or street approaching you with their various offers. Do a little research before you go to know what to expect as far as prices, have a plan, and say no while keep walking past everyone else. These influences should not affect your rating of the Hotel.

Now on to the Hotel....
The Sunset Lagoon was awesome. We went in October so it was pretty quiet.
---The timeshare people defiantly are out to sit down with you. This is how they make their money. However they only asked us this when at the front desk and a simple no thanks was all it took.
--- I never stayed at an all-inclusive, and i was expecting a disappointment, but the food exceeded my expectations. For a buffet it was one of the best i ever had. The italian restaurant was good, not excellent but good for a night or two. There was enough variety and good quality for me never to get sick of having the same thing. The drinks were decent. Middle shelf Liquor and only one variety of beer, Dos XX. The wine was the only disappointment, tolerable but not savoring... The room service is awesome! We actually ordered room service and ate it in the bar.

- The pool is great with the two levels and swim up bar and the activity staff does a great job in always having something going on.

- As far as the trips, we only went to Isle Mujeras which was beautiful. I only wish we had more time. We also went to Chichen Itza, which was incredible. Highly Recommended!!! However we did not go on a tour $100, we went on our own with a charter bus ($25 RT) to save some money. A tour would be nice but a guidebook is all you really need. It is a three hour drive out there but this is something that you must see and is well worth the time spent on the bus. By the way the Mexican busses are much nicer than any American Bus.

- We were so glad that we stayed here and not at the sunset royal. Although the beach location was awesome the hotel was not. It had no character and the food was horrible. Their snack bar food is left sitting out all day while the lagoon cooks everything to order. The pool is also not as nice and it was way more crowded. Being on the coast the wind also got pretty annoying when trying to relax. Defiantly recommend staying on the lagoon side. It is more peaceful, better food, better looking, and aside form the ocean, better services.

Bottom line is our vacation is everything and more that we hoped for. Do your research on what is offered, what cab prices are, and where you want to go and you will have no problems. Mexico is a wonderful and less expensive place to visit than most and the Sunset Lagoon is a great spot to stay!
