Having been a GM since 1983, and a GO too (having worked in Marketing at the NY office for eight years in the 80's and 90's), I know the hyperbole that Club Med uses tends to be greater than the actual situation, especially when it comes to accommodations. However, having just returned from a one week stay at Cancun with my wife and two children (son 9 and daughter 7), I have to say, Club Med exceeded my expectations with the rooms.
We had deluxe adjoining rooms facing the lagoon that were air-conditioned, beautifully appointed, and very functional (including a fridge). While I truly enjoyed the spartan accommodations and no-lock policy of the 80's, it was easy to adapt to these more luxurious rooms, especially with children.
Meals, of course, were excellent, with plenty of quality choices. White chocolate bread is a must! Plus the Mexican specialities!!
The beach was beautiful and the village was well-kept.
And the mini/kids club was professionally run by a great group of GOs. They were all superstars in the way they worked with the children, and a few GOs shined very brightly: Drika, Jonathan, Madison, Maura (Mayra?), JC.
My son was insistent that he wasn't planning on staying with the kids' club long on the first day, and when we went to pick him up for lunch, he told us to come back later. When we did, he said he wanted to stay until the end of the day. He made some new friends, and enjoyed the freedom we let him have around the village. My daughter participated in several kids shows as well as the Boutique fashion show, thoroughly enjoying herself. And they "took home a Club Med vacation" with their new experiences on the trapeze and sailing. They were both totally miserable when we left, which tells me this was the best vacation of their life (you have to experience Club Med to understand that statement).
Club Med used to be run by the founder and his son, and their original concept was A+. But I also really enjoy the "new" Club Med and all that if offers:
-the poolside chaise lounges with cushions (instead of broken plastic strap chairs)
-umbrellas on the beach and around the pool
-bar service on the beach!!!
-all-inclusive including the bar (no more plastic beads)
-tissues in the room and the public restrooms (little touches mean a lot!)
-comfortable seating/lounge area in the square between the pool and the beach
True, Club Med Cancun is no longer "the antidote for civilization" but there's really nothing wrong with that.
The worst thing I can say about my trip was the mosquito infestation down at the Mexican restaurant on the beach. We left immediately after the main course, but even that turned out positive - we went to the main restaurant (air-conditioned) for delicious desserts.
And best of all, even under new management, the club retains the heart and soul of the original Club Med concept - and that's the special "attribute" known as the GO team. They really make the vacation everything it should be.
My dream is that Club Med Turkoise in the Turks and Caicos becomes a family club - it's where I met my wife, and it would be great to bring the kids. Plus, it's only a few hours from NY.
Bottom-line - Club Med Cancun is highly recommended for families, so make your reservation and pack your bags...you won't be disappointed. Club Med really is "life as it should be."
