Club Med Cancun Yucatan

Having been a GM since 1983, and a GO too (having worked in Marketing at the NY office for eight years in the 80's and 90's), I know the hyperbole that Club Med uses tends to be greater than the actual situation, especially when it comes to accommodations. However, having just returned from a one week stay at Cancun with my wife and two children (son 9 and daughter 7), I have to say, Club Med exceeded my expectations with the rooms.

We had deluxe adjoining rooms facing the lagoon that were air-conditioned, beautifully appointed, and very functional (including a fridge). While I truly enjoyed the spartan accommodations and no-lock policy of the 80's, it was easy to adapt to these more luxurious rooms, especially with children.

Meals, of course, were excellent, with plenty of quality choices. White chocolate bread is a must! Plus the Mexican specialities!!

The beach was beautiful and the village was well-kept.

And the mini/kids club was professionally run by a great group of GOs. They were all superstars in the way they worked with the children, and a few GOs shined very brightly: Drika, Jonathan, Madison, Maura (Mayra?), JC.

My son was insistent that he wasn't planning on staying with the kids' club long on the first day, and when we went to pick him up for lunch, he told us to come back later. When we did, he said he wanted to stay until the end of the day. He made some new friends, and enjoyed the freedom we let him have around the village. My daughter participated in several kids shows as well as the Boutique fashion show, thoroughly enjoying herself. And they "took home a Club Med vacation" with their new experiences on the trapeze and sailing. They were both totally miserable when we left, which tells me this was the best vacation of their life (you have to experience Club Med to understand that statement).

Club Med used to be run by the founder and his son, and their original concept was A+. But I also really enjoy the "new" Club Med and all that if offers:
-the poolside chaise lounges with cushions (instead of broken plastic strap chairs)
-umbrellas on the beach and around the pool
-bar service on the beach!!!
-all-inclusive including the bar (no more plastic beads)
-tissues in the room and the public restrooms (little touches mean a lot!)
-comfortable seating/lounge area in the square between the pool and the beach
True, Club Med Cancun is no longer "the antidote for civilization" but there's really nothing wrong with that.

The worst thing I can say about my trip was the mosquito infestation down at the Mexican restaurant on the beach. We left immediately after the main course, but even that turned out positive - we went to the main restaurant (air-conditioned) for delicious desserts.

And best of all, even under new management, the club retains the heart and soul of the original Club Med concept - and that's the special "attribute" known as the GO team. They really make the vacation everything it should be.

My dream is that Club Med Turkoise in the Turks and Caicos becomes a family club - it's where I met my wife, and it would be great to bring the kids. Plus, it's only a few hours from NY.

Bottom-line - Club Med Cancun is highly recommended for families, so make your reservation and pack your bags...you won't be disappointed. Club Med really is "life as it should be."

“Great Family Vacation”

Club Med Cancun Yucatan

We visited Club Med June 10-17. We have a 15 year old daughter and 13 year old twin boys. There was always something for everyone and best of all it was all included.

We went snorkeling, sailing and kayaking on the property and there was never a wait. My daughter and husband worked at mastering the trapeze. They did great but wished they started on our first day there. There were always activities going on around the pool and beach area. The GOs were great. They really do work hard. Tipping is not required but we did tip the maid and bartenders.

Connecting rooms were not available so we had adjoining rooms. This was not a problem. The air conditioning never seems to get cool enough in the rooms. We did have maintenance check both units and it did seem to help somewhat. The rooms were very humid. I guess that is to be expected in June!!

The sand at the beach was white and the ocean was warm and beautiful! Bring lots of sunscreen. If you have to buy it in Cancun it will cost $20 or more.

The food was delicious. There was something for everyone. Generally I do not like buffets but this one was great. Individiual gourmet presentations, fresh pasta, many selections and great desserts. Try the coconut ice cream. There was always a table available and we were joined several times by one or two GOs. It was fun to talk to them and get to know their background.

The evening shows were fun. They had Fashion Show a coupl of times that the kids were in. The circus performers were wonderful, you wonder "just how do they do that!"

We swam with the dolphins at the Aquarium and we all enjoyed it. We visited the flea markets. It was disappointed because most stands were selling the same thing. Not sure how "authentic" the merchandise was. Lots of people trying to sell silver, you probably can get the same deal at the jewelry store at the resort. They start high and expect to sell low so you "think" you are getting a deal. We had lunch out a couple of times and it was very expensive. Club Med really is a great deal.

Overall was had a great time and look forward to returning with extended family members.

“A Great Beach Vacation Plus So Much More”

Club Med Cancun Yucatan

This was our first visit to Cancun and our family's first Club Med visit together. (Back in our single days around 20 yrs. ago we had both visited a Club Med so had an idea of what to expect.) However, this Club Med is so well run, it does justice to the beautiful natural surroundings and then some. This resort caters so beautifully to many types of tourists, families, young, old, couples and seems to make everyone welcome.

The staff made us feel like VIPs from arrival. It was such a treat not to have to drive anywhere, fight crowds, decide where to eat, buy food, etc. Everything was excellent quality and very accessible, no long lines for food or drink, activities, plenty of beach/pool chairs. We loved the international feeling with such a fantastic staff and lovely guests.

I can't say enough about the wonderful Teen program. Rozi, the GO in charge of the 14 - 17 year olds puts her heart and soul into managing her group so that they have a fantastic time. Kids that age need to be together doing something, and that's exactly how it worked. The kids even put on an excellent Hip Hop Show.

There are so many things to do here yet it is still so relaxing. It was easy to take a taxi to go off the property or arrange a tour. They wanted to make you happy. Thanks to Alain at the Reception desk who was very helpful and gave us a late check out which made our departure much smoother.

I don't want to be redundant, so read all the other positive reviews and stay at the ClubMed Cancun.

“Great Trip Family of 5”

Club Med Cancun Yucatan

Jun 20, 2008

We just returned from 10 Days at Club Med Cancun and overall had a great time. We have 3 Kids 8, 8 and 6. We are frequent cruisers but this was our first land based "all inclusive" and we were pleasantly surprised.

The Good...
Rooms:
We booked the "Deluxe Conierge Family 2 Bedroom" this was in the Jade buidling 2nd Floor facing the lagoon. Basically 2 rather large connecting rooms with a nice balcony with a really nice view of the lagoon. As has been noted the AC worked hard and in the evening the room was nice although humidity was a constant. Others have commented on the Jade building as not worth in. We thought the rooms were nice, the service was excellent and the location very close to snorkeling and the sailing area were perfect.

Food:
The food was great in the main restaurant. Every evening had a new theme "Mexican, Italian, Elegent etc" with a variet of choices including one night with Stone Crab Claws. A table was always available and the food was well above average and in some cases simply superb. Several days they held beachside bbqs Drinks were always available and served poolside, beachside, barside and anywhere else you wanted by friendly and speedy bartenders.

Activities:
There is always something to do, and all inclusive really meant just that... Snorkeling on the reef at the property, Sailing, kayaking, tennis etc. was all easy to do and yes of course free. We were honesty hoping our kids would get more into the kids club but they really only went 3 of the days and seemed to most enjoy the Trapeze. Other than that they wanted to stay with us which was fine

The Service:
Simply amazing... Tipping is not the norm but despite this, there service was always attentive, friendly and quick.

The So So:
Have read from others that the shows were "superb".. Honestly, compared to Cruises they came off a little as nice GO talent shows more than professional shows. The GO's in addition to running activiites, reception etc are also tapped to dance which was OK but nothing spactacular.

We took a day trip into cancun and could not wait to get back to the Hotel. Touristy American shopping, bars and time share peddlers abound. We did go to the Interactive Acquarium where my kids got to pet a shark which was the only highpoint. Other than that there is not much "Mexican" about Cancun and the rows and rows of endless gigantic hotels.

Club Med is a slice of paradise and a perfect vacation destination in itself. We would not hesitate to come back. Unlike cruising where you kind of dread the last day settle your account for drinks etc. I was thrilled to check out and hear "You Owe Nothing".... Thank Club Med

“First All Inclusive”

Club Med Cancun Yucatan

4 of 5 stars

My husband, six year old daughter and I stayed at the Club Med in Cancun for one week. This was our first time travelling to Mexico and our first all inclusive.

Rooms:
We wanted the works so we booked a Ocean front room in the Jade building. This building is a short walk to the village and it offers large suites, conceirge service, room service(limited but good enough) and free internet/computer. We were really happy with the room even though it was never really cold enough during the day, there were some ants but nothing gross and do not leave the sliding doors open at all(mosquitos!!!). Screen doors would be really nice in this room. The housekeeping staff is excellent. My husband booked his own room in the Jade building (club med does not offer a cot and the family suites are for parties of 4). He had a garden view. It was smaller but cooler (temp)then mine.
All in all we were all happy and comfortable in this room.

Activities:
Club Med has so much to do. You can be as busy or as lazy as you want to be. We enjoyed water excersize every day, the family games and the night time activities(trivia, fashion show). We also really enjoyed the snorkeling(on site) and the pool/ocean are very beuatiful.

Kids Club-Mini Med: My daughter really enjoyed the mini med. The kids are busy all day. We made the mistake of taking her out of the club when we saw her around. I think it is better to be in for the day or out for the day. She really enjoyed the sailing, circus, magic, science, pool, snacks, the show. Pretty much everything!!!

Excursions:
We arranged a private car service to take us to Xcaret on the Saturday. Saturday the Mini club and some activities are closed. It is a popular day for guest to arrive and depart. This day away from Club Med gave us the chance to see a little bit of Cancun. Xcarat is really awesome. There is an underground lagoon and lots of wildlife. It was really worth it. Our driver waited for us all day. When we were finished at Xcarat he drove us to Playa Del Carmen. We did a little shopping and saw the "european" side of the Cancun area. Our driver, Armando, waited for us and then drove us back. He was really informative and very proud of his country. Talking to him was a real treat for me!

Food:
We have never stayed at an all inclusive so we did not know what to expect at meal time. We were satisfied with the food. It was very fresh and there was so much to choose from. The desserts are awesome. The fish is really good. We were very satisfied with the food. We tried to eat at the Mexican rest. but I could not deal with the mosquitoes so we left. We went back the next day for lunch and were very happy with the choices. It was also less crowded then the main buffet in the village.

Shows
The Club Med shows are first class. They have fantastic costumes and the Mini Med show is complete with background props and really great costumes. The kids practice everyday for the big show on Thursday and it is great. The theatre is not air conditioned so you basically melt but seeing a happy kid is worth it.

Summary
We really enjoyed our first all inclusive experience and Club Med is a very well run organization. They have a lot of EN-Er-Gia. (Once you visit you will get it). We are already planning a ski vacation at a Club Med in France)
P.S. Visit Alfredo at the bar for a A+++ Mojito! Cheers!
