Compass Point Beach Resort

I usually loath to reveal any of my special vacation spots for fear more people will discover it and the very reason we escaped to the location is lost. However, Compass Point continues to be a gem that sparkles in the Bahamian Island Chain. I have stayed at numerous locations throughout the Bahamas, most recently on Long Island. However, the logistics of getting around the Bahamas to secluded destinations can be intimidating.

I love Compass Point for a number of reasons. Beginning with the cottages, there are few locations where you can sit on the "porch" as us southern folks like to call it and look DOWN into the water. You have a 180 degree panorama of the ocean, and all that goes with it. If you turn around, you have another 180 degree view of the most colorful and quaint looking cottages in the Caribean. To the west is the main alignment for the airport and a constant stream of aircraft are lining up on final approach. If you like watching flight patterns, as I do, this is an added bonus. Fortunately the resort is far enough off the flightline that it is not a noise problem.

The rooms are octagonal with an elevated king size bed in the middle. There is a lot of room to store luggage and clothes and our cottage is amply equipped with a coffemaker (for us early birds), a microwave, refrigerator, and a desk with a comfortable chair. There is a DVD player and large screen TV, with a surround sound system. The A/C works diligently with a low hum, somehow keeping up with the open jalousy windows. I get some of my best sleep in this resort, accentuated by the lapping of the waves on the rocks below, seemingly under the building.

The Resort has a nice little dock surrounded by rocks and a sandy beach. A collection of small tropical fish underneath the dock await guests, creating a perfect spot for the novice snorkeler. For the more ambitious, there is a gorgeous patch reef further offshore in about 20' of water, depending on tide. We have always been entertained by the resident Lion Fish, an assortment of small lobsters, and tropicals. My wife gets a little panicky when Mr. Barracuda swims up to check us out, and tends to cling to me like a remora, but I love it. You are actually in greater danger of getting run over by a boat if you don't listen for the propeller whine and pay attention. However, there is very little boat traffic close to shore because it is relatively shallow. By the way, for the most romantic of events, ask to have dinner served on the dock as the sun goes down.

Food in the resort is constently good. There is a variety to choose from on the menu and prices were consistently Bahamian. If you want to save a dollar or two, the resort equips the downstairs of their elevated cottages with another small refrigerator, a toaster, grill, and an assortment of dishes in case you want to cook. We usually don't but do enjoy a breakfast or two while looking out over the ocean.

The staff is always friendly and Skip and Linda, the managers, seem always to bend over backwards to accomodate their guests. Sitting at the bar you will always run into a mix of guests, tourists, and locals. The restaurant appears to be a favorite lunch spot for consumating local real estate deals and weekends usually bring about at least one wedding reception.

This was our third time back in a year. We will continue to come back because of the ease of getting from the airport to the resort. It is off the beaten path and frenzied pace of downtown Nassau. If you want to go shopping, a taxi or bus ride downtown can fit the bill. But if you want a peaceful, quiet place to enjoy the beach and vodka clear (since everyone uses gin) waters Compass Point remains our favorite.

I stayed there for 4 nights and it was the most relaxing place I've ever been to. The staff and owners were nice and accommodating.
We stayed in a Sea Front hut and the view was incredible. The food was yummy and walking along Love Beach was a beautiful experience. Sitting on the dock and watching all the amazing fish was something I will not forget.

If you stay at Compass Point and plan to venture outside the resort, I would recommend renting a car. We had a blast driving all around the island checking out the scenery.

I would totally return for another trip.

“Loved This Beautiful Relaxing Resort”

Compass Point Beach Resort

We got married here in May 2008. The resort was perfect for a wedding and for a relaxing pre-wedding vacation. The resort has a very relaxing feel to it as opposed to the hectic pace of some of the resorts on Paradise Island. We did spend a day at the Atlantis at the water park, but we were actually much more content to stay at Compass Point and hang out by the pool, snorkel off the dock (free snorkeling gear provided) with the sting rays and occasional barracuda (there was one under the dock for 2 days), and walk along the adjacent beach. The restaurant at Compass Point has very good food, and although at first the prices seem expensive, compared to the other restaurants on the island the prices are actually quite reasonable. The restaurant gets very busy at night, as they have some type of music/entertainment most nights and is a popular nighttime destination. There is a small spa at the hotel, which we utilized and the services were very nice. Our room was well maintained and the sounds of the waves lulled us to sleep every evening. We utilized the free movies, games and books at the front desk and the resort has free wireless access, so we were able to use our computer from almost anywhere in the resort. The staff was very accommodating, we wanted to cook fish one night and the manger let us use the hotel BBQ and we were able to have a small get together on the patio next to the dock. Most of the rooms have small kitchenettes so that you can cook some of your own meals if you want, this was a huge plus if you do not feel like eating out every meal. Overall, if you like small boutique out of the way hotels, this hotel will be a perfect fit for you. If you are more accustomed to a big resort and want a more mainstream type of vacation, Compass Point may not be what you are looking for.

“Great time at Compass Point”

Compass Point Beach Resort

Compass Point was a great romantic get away with some qualifiers.

My wife and I spent about 7 days here back in June '07. We loved the place even though we did not like the Island as a whole.

The people who run the place are a bit on the quirky side, but fun once you get to know them.

Love beach was beautiful, but the snorkeling from the shore was just marginal which was a little disappointing. The resort itself didn't really have much of a beach.

The restaurant was good, though food as a whole is pretty expensive. I wish there would have been a market close and an alternative restauarant within walking distance (we walked to Traveler's Rest but it didn't feel particularly safe given the narrow roads and the driving habits of the Islanders). Perhaps once they get some of the condos on Love Beach built, some of these things will follow.

The accomodations are pretty rustic, but it was great being able to open up the doors and just look out to the ocean (we had an ocean front hut). I wouldn't even bother unless you are willing to pay to stay in something that is ocean front!

Overall, I would definitely stay here again but primarily for a night or two on my way to one of the out islands (the location was very close to the airport which was a plus!).

“COMPASS POINT- THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE”

Compass Point Beach Resort

Jun 3, 2008

On April 19, 2008, my daughter's Wedding and Reception Dinner was held at Compass Point. The ceremony took place on the gazebo over the water which was decorated in white tulle. The dinner, served on the sun deck at sundown, was superb. The food portions, which were ample, were top quality and cooked to perfection. Some of our guests even commented that the Conch Chowder was the best they'd ever tasted. The managers, Linda and Skip, as well as their staff, were friendly yet professional and just couldn't do enough to make our guests comfortable. The place was clean and well maintained. Compass Point is an ideal place for any couple looking for a Carribean Island atmosphere . Thanks to Linda, Skip and their staff, it was a perfect day.
