My wife and I just returned from a nearly 3 week visit to Puerto Rico, the USVI, and St. Marteen. We stayed in many wonderful places, but by far the best was the Hix Island House. We stayed in the Casita ... the architecure was terrific, the setting wonderful and the staff/owners friendly and helpful (and the fresh eggs and bread they brought us each day for breakfast were wonderful). My wife enjoyed the outdoor yoga classes and we both appreciated the quiet setting (its very rural - be prepared that the only sounds you will hear at night are the sounds of the coqi, the crickets and birds, and the roosters in the morning off in the distance). The gracious owners hosted a small cocktail party at their home on the property and we appreciated the chance to meet them and the other guests and learn more about the unique approach to architecture. The island itself was also a treat - we visited three beautiful beaches on the three days we were there and found ouselves on nearly empty white sand beaches with wonderful snorkeling and kayaking. There are several wonderful restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive. I have already recommended the hotel and the island to my friends and co-workers since my return. Dont miss the chance to visit this wonderful Island and when you do include the Hix Island house on your itenerary.

If you are looking to get away with your sweetheart ,from the hustle and bustle of the big city, this is the place to go! I went to the Hix Island House for the Christmas and New Year's Holiday with my boyfriend. We absolutley loved it! When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised with our room-lofts as they call them. The cement structure makes each room so neat and clean. And the outside shower is to die for! We expecially liked the homemade bread that was waiting for us in our room along with fresh fruit, juice, eggs, coffee and all the fixings. We were really excited with this feature as we both like to get up and have breakfast in our room before heading out for the day. Our loft was very private and we had a great view of the ocean in the far away horizon. We did not take advantage of the bug nets because there were no bugs at night- but it is there if you need it. I especially enjoyed the pool because it has such a natural flare about it. The pool is not huge but it was just the right size for the amount of guests that were staying there all week. There were no battles for chairs or getting up at 6am to put your towel on a "reserved chair". The pool is the perfect place to cool off and read in a quiet setting.
The Hix Island house is defintely not your typical "all inclusive" hotel. It is not a food-factory, or day camp! We actually loved trying out all the restaurants in the downtown area. We even decided to stay in one night because you have the luxury of having a full kitchen so you can cook dinner yourself. We Loved this idea as we dine out all the time living in the city. The grocery stores and convenience stores have tons of things to chose from.
I was so relaxed when I left the Hix House! We are planning to go back next year!!!! ....We are still talking about the trip and how we miss hearing all the "peepers" at night!
I highly recommend this hotel to couples or friends who want to get away for a low maitenence vacation! Ladies- leave your heals at home!

“Our stay at Hix House made the trip!”

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hix Island House.

The room was open-air and it was really great to hear all the frogs and birds during the evenings. We had a mosquito net over the bed and only had problems with bugs at dawn and dusk.

The kitchen was well-appointed with a blender, coffee grinder and french press and a gas stove. They stocked it daily with eggs, fresh bread, fruit juice and coffee.

We loved getting up in the morning, eating our breakfast and wandering down to the pool. After that it was lunch, hit the beach, and back to the pool for more sun before dinner.

The staff (especially Brenda) was extremely helpful and gave us some great recommendations for dinners out.

If I go back to Vieques I will definitely stay at Hix House.

“Nice setting, but bedbug central”

While we had a wonderful time on Vieques, I don't know that I'd stay at Hix again after our experience. Most of the bugs were avoidable by wearing bug spray all the time - it is open air, so this is a necessity - sleeping under the mosquito netting in the room.

However, I was eaten alive by bedbugs, which mosquito netting didn't protect against. When I alerted the staff to this fact, their initial reaction was to do all they could to fix it - they sprayed the room extensively, got new sheets etc since they were full that night. We also got a new room the next day, but it was worse. There was no staff reaction when I alerted them to the same problem in a different room.

We did enjoy the decor, feel and atmosphere of the place, but without a guarantee of no bedbugs I wouldn't stay there again.

Management Response

We take every guest's concerns very seriously here at the Hix House, and responded to this complaint thoroughly and promptly. Despite finding nothing in the bed, we still removed all of the bedding material, sprayed thoroughly, and remade the bed with brand new sheets and egg crate mattress. When she moved to another loft, she had the same complaint. When we asked to see the bites, we were shown three mosquito bites on her arm. The guy with whom she was sharing the beds had no bites? We brought in an exterminator to inspect and remove any bugs, and he found nothing in either bed?! The guests before her in each loft had no complaints of bedbugs, nor have the guests that have been staying in those lofts since? There are a number of places to get bitten in the Carribean, but our beds are not one of them. We are prudent with scheduling exterminators to prevent any such inconvenience, and will continue to do so to keep our guests pleased.

“Luxury camping for too much money!”

Hix Island House

A friend and I stayed here while in Vieques for a wedding. Having read the reviews on Trip Advisor, I was at least forewarned about what kind of experience this would be, but I never expected it to be as extreme as it was.

As others have stated here, there are people who love this hotel and the experience they get with it, but for about $300 per night, it is really not for me.

The good first, the staff is really wonderful and friendly. The pool was cool and natural, the perfect temperature always without the nasty chlorine that is a part of most hotels. We felt safe on the grounds even though there are no lights to see your way around in the dark.

Our room was really no more than a garage. Unfinished concrete walls and floors, no rug, paint or much of any decoration. We actually had a heavy garage door that we had to pull up and down if we wanted to access the patio. There were 2 twin beds that were okay, but not luxurious in any way.

We spent the 20 minutes before bed every night fighting all manner of bugs (spiders, mosquitos) and other wildlife (iguanas, lizards). Being that the room was all concrete, any natural sound from outside would reverberate loudly around the room and was deafening while you were trying to sleep.

Again, the only saving grace was that I was slightly prepared for this from other reviews, but I hoped for the best. I can definitely appreciate the benefit of an eco-friendly enviornment, but I suggest there also be a benefit of less cost to the consumer if there are going to be no luxuries for luxury prices.
