As some of the previous reviews have stated, the outside is very inviting as is the lobby, open air, checked tile floor, lovely plants. The side patio is also very cute but that is where it ends. We checked in for one night before a cruise and were greeted by a surly clerk who offered no help when we asked to check our large travel bags so we would not have to carry them upstairs. We knew there was no elevator but expected some help in this area. He said he was busy doing book work! After lugging everything up to the third floor we found a clean but sparse bedroom with a closet that had a peek thru to the adjacent room. The wall did not go all the way up! Not a very secure feeling. The bathroom was large, old and clean, kind of charming, but who needs just a charming bathroom! Our room was quiet enough and the beds just ok. The furniture in the room looked like it was retrieved from the Salvation Army. We were hoping for a quaint experience but instead got a letdown. Stay at the Marriott, a few steps away and forget about a local flavor. Not worth it!

“Inexpensive--Adequate Accommodations”

Was hesitant to stay at this Inn due to some of the negative reviews; however, needed a place to stay for a single night and the price was right. Joshua, the clerk at the front desk, was extremely helpful and friendly. He assisted me and others in my group with clean rooms, area information, and helpful hints. The rooms are definitely not upscale but were adequate for a brief stay. There is no pool at this inn but access to the beach is an easy two-minute walk--right around the corner with no streets to cross. The complimentary breakfast consisted of donuts, rolls, bread, cereal and fruit. Coffee, tea, and juice were also available. This is pretty much the standard fare for most of the hotels providing breakfast. I rated this hotel neutral/average for the accommodations but would definitely rate it above average for the personnel and convenience. Just a short walk away, you can catch a bus for 75 cents into Old San Juan. Additionally, there are many restaurants and stores within walking distance.

Had I read the reviews on trip advisor I could have saved myself the great disappointment of staying at El Canario Inn in San Juan. Admittedly the location is good (one block from a great beach, good restaurants and shopping and a bus stop nearby) but if I'd been an inch over my 5'4" I wouldn't have been able to sit on the toilet the bathroom was so small. No room to put my bag, a towel the size of a face cloth and they billed my credit card when I specifically stated I wanted to pay cash. Despite offering a good breakfast and being in a good location, the US$117 it cost me left me feeling VERY ripped off. Billed as a European style hotel I can assure you that this did not meet European standards.

“What a disappointment!”

My friend and I were traveling from NY, very excited to be in PR for the 1st time. We arrived at El Canario around midnight on a Friday night, our room had been booked the week before and the hotel stuff sounded very nice on the phone. When we got into the hotel, we were told that the hotel cancelled our reservation! The guy who took the reservation, Joshua, was the messenger of the bad news. All he could do was blaming his manager, and when we asked to talk to the manager; he was conveniently out of reach… Weekend of March 18, all hotels were packed. El Canario made an agreement with Iberia hotel to relocate us. The room we got at Iberia was a dump and we had to pay the same price. It was a take it or leave it situation. How can you treat tourists with such disrespect?
This is the 1st time such a thing happened to us and although we can not comment on the amenities of the hotel (we only saw the reception), I would say that if you want to be sure to get a room in San Juan, don’t go to El Canario.

“A small clean place to stay”

The El Canario Inn was clean, but the rooms can be very small. This isn’t a bed and breakfast as indicated by the signs. Our party was given one large and a very small room in a seperate building. There is a wonderful sitting room and patio and a clean kitchen and each morning a continental breakfast is available but beyond coffee and muffins there isn't much to be said for the value. The staff was very courteous, knowledgeable, and helpful during our stay and provided information to help guide us to some local dinning and entertainment. The Inn was within easy walking distance of the beach and casinos. There was lots of street noise because of the location and next door construction noise was heard very early in the morning. The Inn isn’t near old San Juan or the cruise ship docks as advertised so be prepared to pay a Taxi fare if you intend to take in the sites in the historic area. Otherwise, shopping, dinning and entertainment are nearby. I wouldn’t recommend the Inn for a long stay but if you are looking a inexpensive place to stay for one or two nights the Inn may work for you.
